When you make an account does the game creators store your ip adress? Do they store the computer ip of what your posting from?

It's possible to trace your IP back to your computer. But, I'm pretty sure they don't store that kind of data.

In other words, if you're thinking of doing anything stupid on the TGC forum/site, then don't.
We will get you.

What I find interesting is that my IP address is the same across my whole LAN, which is fine there are only 2 PCs anyway.

Aluseus, do you know the basic principle behind the external IP address?

It is an unique code that identifies either a computer or LAN on the internet. If you're behind a LAN, it'll return your LAN IP and they cannot see what exact computer you've been posting from. They will know your LAN IP which basically means you're screwed anyway.

Trivia: IPv4 adresses are running out! Statistics say that before 2010, we'll have ran out of IP adresses.

As I was programming my visitor hit counter yesterday I was wondering exactly when that would happen. I was also wondering if the IPs were ever reused but I guess not. So what happens when we run out? Add a new set of numbers to the end? Hehe.

I'll be using Vista by 2010 considering no other Windows OS is likely to come out before then.

Your IP address is available to any website you visit.

if you wanted it to be private you shouldn't have connected to the internet. look here, http://whatismyip.com/.

You are sounding a bit suspicious here anyway, just what is it you want to do that you don't want the admin to know who it was eh?

There's more to it than just a simple IP address. For example, if all the computers in your home are connected to the internet through a router, or a single computer sharing its internet connection, then any computer you post from will show the same IP. The same goes for people using WiFi. The IP address that the website will get will just be the one of the computer hosting the internet connection.

If you're really paranoid, just use a proxy server.

Users have done this in the past. If you made accounts on 2 computers it wouldn't matter - each time you post they can see your IP. So, they'd see that your two accounts were coming from the IP. You'd be busted and embarrassed. There is no situation where you should be posting with two accounts. I've seen people argue with themselves, I've seen them fill up their WIP posts with posts from their other account, and I've seen users take their own side during an argument. I can't possibly understand it.

Come see the WIP!

A good example is tha_rami's "who am I?" thread from a while back. The mods could easily see that the new user was also tha_rami, as the IPs matched. Obviously there are many great tools Rich built into the mod panel to save us from manually memorizing anything

k, ill tell you why just so I dont get banned k? I Was keyword here is was planning to make another account to use after ive been here long enough mainly because when I join a forum/chat server I have a hard time adjusting no matter what the subject mainly because i like posting and will post just about anything I can justify in my mind to post. After a while I tend to become less n00bish (haven't quite got there yet) but people tend to still not like me (pixeltendo was a disaster) anyone i know there is a 99.99% im going to get slapped/banned for this so yeah. That is my explanation.

Edit:
Before I'm banned, @Cash curtis: I have no idea why youd want to have alternating posts withyourself. When I need to argue with myself I argue in my room.

That is impossible unless only one of the computers is on at a time. (or connected to the LAN) I think you are talking about the external I.P. address of the LAN network. The internal IP address is either randomly assigned to each computer by the router or fixed, but either way the I.P. address has to be different. If you go to a website like whatismyip.com for example the website will only see your external I.P. Only the router knows your internal I.P. address. (or anything else inside the network)

Since you're not going to be doing it for insidious purposes, then go for it. The mods won't (or they shouldn't) rat you out or care, as long as you behave.

But you shouldn't create a new account so that you can post topics with on and reply with another, that's just bad form

Speaking of extra accounts, I think I accidently made another account a while back <Which would explain why I didn't see any of my threads in that account>. Just look for any currently existing dbuser 2006+ members. There might be a GUI tutorial... If a mod would kindly delete that then that would be great. <I'll look for a thread example>

Found it

Um, the IP for most people change every now and then. They get assigned them temporary from the ISP. If you want a permanent IP (to hold a permanent server for example) then you usually have to pay extra. Anyone using a modem get assigned a "new" IP every time they call up. Well, one can still find out where you are posting from and what ISP you use and they probably can dig out the MAC address (unique) of your network card if they know when you used a specific IP.

Only if your ISP gives out Dynamic IPs...
Most now use Static IPs (for broadband).

Hah, I was considering doing the "Who Am I" post over 56K (mine does a dynamic IP plus I was posting overnight so speeds were just enough not to drive me insane) but I thought I'd have more chance if I did it under the same IP (so the mods would know it's me, and they all love me 'cause I'm behaving - j/k).

Was a fun thread. Aaah. Good ol' times.
