Sorry?

I can already watch DivX on my PC...

The only reason I've even considered a PS3 is so I can play the new Ratchet & Clank.

This is not another reason to get a ps3, this is just another perk if you have one already...

I wouldn't get a ps3 to watch DivX vids when I can do so easily on my pc, though I might be more inclined to use it on the ps3 if I wanted to watch it on the tv.

Plus it can start up your dishwasher through Wifi - and if you own a PSP, you can start the dishwasher from anywhere in the world (if there's coverage).

Honestly, not a reason to buy a PS3. A nice extra, though.

Another reason to get a PS3 is to put Ubuntu Linux on it... Course, I'm not a sony fanboy... Or Nintendo fanboy... I'm just saying the PS3 *looks* pretty cool. I've played it a few times at Target. I enjoyed the few games it had on there, and in the end that's the only true reason to get any gaming console: The games. A 60GB hard drive or such is only a perk, and is meaningless if none of the games you play will work with it. <I am speaking in general, and 60GB hard drive is what came to mind>

The 360 is getting DivX support soon too, according to reports. I'm surprised it took this long, really.

That is very ignorant. If anything the 360 has *more* perks than the PS3. This sounds very baseless and honestly it doesn't seem like you have touched a 360 or a PS3. The Wii is the console with the fewest perks, really. Hell, it doesn't play DVDs.

Personally I rather enjoy DivX material on a TV (with a sofa) then on a computer. Thanks to WiFi and the HDD I can just stream or copy DivX files to a PS3 without bothering with cables or burning them to a DVD. And since the PS3 have a web browser you can just watch DivX material straight from the web.

The PS3 was always stated to be more than a games console so complaining it does more doesn't make sense. Both the PS3 and Xbox360 are trying to be living room entertainment centres too. Also complaining that your PC already does 'this feature' or 'that feature' isn't relevant either. If you want to do everything on your PC (which i'll bet was a lot more expensive than a console) then don't buy a console. Simple as that. Moaning that a console does more than you expect is daft IMO.
There has been no press releases from DivX about it appearing on the 360 so I would be interested to see where it was reported. I would have thought that MS would try to keep as much as they can in WMV format.

I have a 360. Or I wouldn't of added you to my friends list.
And my dad had a ps3.

Ok... I shall say something...
Its your oppinion on which console you get if its a Ps3 or 360 or a Wii. And I'm pretty annoyed by these threads because all they do is start off fights. Its annoying.

Arguably, this is a good thing; keeps the cost of the console down (proprietary codecs and whatnot) and to be perfectly honest, if you want to play DVDs, buy a DVD player (not aimed at you Jeku, but just in general)

They're hoping to introduce DVD playback into the Wii sometime next year, all it will probably take is a firmware upgrade, but as you said, I've got a DVD player already, aswell as a PS2 that does it anyway.

I got a PS2 and a cheap DVD player with DivX support, if I could (and had the money) I would throw them both away and replace them with a PS3. All in one means less cable switching

That's what it comes down to really, doesn't it? If it was cheaper, more people would buy it, as it is, it's too bloody expensive.

the 360 mostly has shooters, which are boring, and its made by Microsoft. which alone is enugh to discard it as a good option. ps3 costs way to mutch.

waight for the price to drop and more(original) games to come out before rating a system

learn blender, you will never regret it.

Come on dude, your anti-Microsoft attitude is getting a bit exaggerated.

PS3 has access to the internet? Not a bad feature, but most people don't go onto their console to browse the internet. It's easier to pick up viruses that way too.

Xbox 360s have tons of "perks". Xbox Arcade, DVD playback, a music player, etc. You can even hook up your media center to it. And you don't have to pay monthly for each online game you play. :p

Just for the record, I don't own a ps3, and don't plan on getting one, I'm perfectly content with my PC to play games, at better quality visuals than the PS3 can even offer.

Anyways, they've got a nifty feature similar to itunes, you can download videos and such. Having divx support would be awesome, watch all my downloaded divx shows on the tv (if I didn't have the compy already setup on the tv)

Viruses are written to attack specific software, (ie, specific OS's), if there are any viruses for the PS3, I'm sure you can count them on one hand. Also, if viruses for PS3 exist, I wouldn't doubt Sony has already fixed the issue the virus exploits in their firmware.

Uhm, no. Sony is actually releasing a PS3 anti-virus package in cooperation with some security firm.

I read that, I think it's a laughable idea, just like running an AV in linux is.

And what makes you smarter then Sony?

Ok, so let's say there are only a handful of viruses(which is not true).

How about we say one hacks into your profile and bills you by buying things online(assuming PS3 has an Xbox live like feature). Is that not worth an anti-virus itself?

Of course I just use Xbox 360s, and I don't have to worry about viruses at all.

EDIT:

The reason why you may think it's funny for Linux to need AV software, is because it's less popular and people would rather make a virus for a more used OS, so there are less viruses. Are you saying the PS3 is unpopular?

Or you could just use the PC for gaming, it's better than any console out there, and most full adventure games don't cost $50+.

If I'd be a virus writer, I'd be aiming at Linux, lol. Just for fun.

I'm not a giant corporation run entirely by a bunch of n00b committees at the top. Trust me, Sony isn't doing this to protect you, they're doing it cuz they're gonna make a boatload of cash off the AV company. And the AV company wants to sell it to you cuz that's what they do (sell AV), just like a siding salesman wants to side your brick house

An AV is not a firewall, as you are making out to be. If you have a hardware firewall (a router), there's no need for a software firewall. Could you imagine how hard it would be for a hacker to get into your PS3? Far harder than it would a computer. Any respectable hacker would waste their time hacking computers, not PS3s.

As for viruses on the PS3, I doubt there's more than one or two, if that. I'd like to see you point to a news article about an active virus that affects the ps3. (I've looked, couldnt find any)

The PS3 is not susceptible, because A. any virus you get on random websites would likely not be written for the PS3, they'd be written for a normal OS, like windows. B. Any virus written for the PS3 that you might contract would be downloaded from unofficial sources and would most likely have to be executed by you, meaning you'd have to be a giant dummy to get the virus. If the virus did manage to be auto-downloaded and executed on your ps3, and be written for your ps3, your ps3 might block it anyway if the firmware had been properly updated and sony fixed the exploit that the virus used.

I'd laugh at you if you bought this crappy av that sony's trying to push off on you

I do hope that if you get one, your PS3 gets hit by a virus, if only to point out how virusses on the new generations of consoles are perfectly capable. As soon as they offer download content for your PS3 on unofficial sites your more than susceptible to virusses. Period.

Regardless, even the gamespot forums agree with me:

Yes, I too think it's a good thing. Nowadays everyone should have a DVD player of some sort already.

Locked, as there's already a "console war" thread that's active. Please don't take offense, Digital Awakening, as this has nothing to do with you. But as you can see the topics can slide quite easily.
