I'm not a giant corporation run entirely by a bunch of n00b committees at the top. Trust me, Sony isn't doing this to protect you, they're doing it cuz they're gonna make a boatload of cash off the AV company. And the AV company wants to sell it to you cuz that's what they do (sell AV), just like a siding salesman wants to side your brick house
An AV is not a firewall, as you are making out to be. If you have a hardware firewall (a router), there's no need for a software firewall. Could you imagine how hard it would be for a hacker to get into your PS3? Far harder than it would a computer. Any respectable hacker would waste their time hacking computers, not PS3s.
As for viruses on the PS3, I doubt there's more than one or two, if that. I'd like to see you point to a news article about an active virus that affects the ps3. (I've looked, couldnt find any)
The PS3 is not susceptible, because A. any virus you get on random websites would likely not be written for the PS3, they'd be written for a normal OS, like windows. B. Any virus written for the PS3 that you might contract would be downloaded from unofficial sources and would most likely have to be executed by you, meaning you'd have to be a giant dummy to get the virus. If the virus did manage to be auto-downloaded and executed on your ps3, and be written for your ps3, your ps3 might block it anyway if the firmware had been properly updated and sony fixed the exploit that the virus used.
I'd laugh at you if you bought this crappy av that sony's trying to push off on you
