My 1.8GHz was running at 55 degrees flat after an hour with nothing running and the desktop locked - and so I decided to push it to 2.0GHz. Merely ten seconds after I had done so, it hit 54. And then 53. And then 52. As a matter of fact, it fell to 49. What's going on?

UHOH THE CPU IS GETTING SO HOT ITS MESSING UP THE HEAT SENSOR!!!

Just kidding. That does sound odd, though the only real way to know if it's keeping it cooler is to test out something CPU intensive and check the temps then.

Without knowing your processor it's hard to say, it could be it auto down clocked to avoid damage. Oh, and are you trying to ruin your processor?

The fan is probably working harder to keep it cool. You'll probably get cycles where the fan kicks in and then turns off, before it's pretty much instantly turned back on again.

When I am OCing something I always turn on the fan 100 percent, so I know it'll stay cool if I go too far

You can always turn it back to auto later.

Have you checked your fan settings, in the BIOS? Like the others have said, it's probably set to speed up to cool the CPU down.

But it won't downclock while the system is running, otherwise it would crash/freeze up, trust me, I've done it before :\
