My old setup had my c drive on d:, but only because of by accident:o)

I normally name my other drives though, like my music drive is m:, and videos are v:, swap partition is s:, etc...

It's extremely important. Not only do you have to worry about the drive it's getting installed to, people move their folders around, for example, my Documents folder is not in it's normal place, I move it to another drive so that if I format or the drive becomes inoperable I don't lose my documents.

On top of that, people who dual boot a lot of times don't use the c: drive for their windows installation.

And then there's people who don't want stuff installed to their c drive but another drive.

In fact, unless you have to, you shouldn't even use an installer, they're really annoying when trying out demos and stuff.

OMFG, I installed a program (The GIMP) the other day and it didn't let me select where to install to and it pissed me off. My C:\ drive is only 12 GB with maybe 20 MB free (Has Windows Vista). The drive that I put all my files on is my E:\ drive (Has files). And the drive that Windows XP is stored on is the D:\ drive (I think). And trust me, I'm gonna need some additional hard drives soon. :/

Cheers,

-naota

Back in the days of 98(and a little on 2000) I changed the drive letters, but now I just don't see the point in it. :p

Yeah, I was going to say that I have seen a fair few apps over the years that insist on C drive. Not common, and these days almost unseen, but it still does happen (esp. on betas) and you are stuffed if you want to install an old app.

Other question is why not have a C drive?... Anyone remember the days of having B drives?

Cheers

lol 5.25" floppies, I still have a drive and some of those floppies in a box around here somewhere. mobo's still support them, at least mine does iirc. Some people dont use the 3.5 floppies any more either. I find them essential for system maintenace (bios updates, etc) and trouble shooting in a dos boot environment.

Vista is my C, and XP is H. For most installers i just delete it where it says C, and replace it with an H. Works fine most of the time.

way to go

also common is dual booting, where one drive is one letter and os, the others are other letters and os's. My old 2k machine was originally a 98 box on C, then I added a second hdd as D and installed 2k on it, and that became the default boot drive. I would be out of luck if an installer forced C as the drive, or it would be out of luck rather

lol i just wanted to be lazy and have it always go to C: so that way the changing between the play and install buttons for the launcher was easy, but now i just added a function to search all available drives for the programs install (i dont exaclty know how to add stuff to like the windows registry, or to search it so this is the easiest way to do it.) and if it can find it, it says play and executes the games play file when clicked, and if it cant find an installed file the button says install and will access the install file

True, although on mine the booted OS is C: and the other OS is D: So currently in Vista, Vista is C: and XP is D: But if I boot in XP then XP is C: and Vista is D:

My hard drives are D:/ and E:/ because of something that got messed up when we installed the second one. My flash drive is C:/

Chuck Norris doesn't use drive letters, the files just know where they're supposed to go....
