Hi all.

The latest time I've worked a lot with linux ubuntu. One of the things I really love, is the virtual desktops. For those of you who doesn't know what an virtual desktop is, it's an way to keep better order on youu windows. It's just so annoying when the desktop get filled with windows. In linux they've solved this problem simply by not limiting the number of desktops to one. You can have several. And if you place your window in one, it will not appear in the other ones. Then you of cource can switch between them, and even move windows between them. Awsome as hell!
Latly it has been added to osx, and its planned for windows vienna (the successor of vista, that will come out in abou two or three years). But why wait? There exist programs out there that can give it to everything from windows 95 to vista. Just use google and search for 'virtual desktops'. Or follow these three links:

Haven't tested these two:
http://www.codeplex.com/vdm
http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net/

This one is the one I tested and it works great!
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

To make the last one work, rightclick on the taskbar, click on the option where you add stuff to the taskbar (like an adressbar) and select 'Desktop Manager'.

Note that they (at last the one I tested and one of the others) wont give you the ability to move windows between desktops, which is an pitty. But they are still very nice.

When your love leaves you, it hurt. But when she wants you back, when she reallize leaving you was an mistake, who am I not to take her back, if I still love her?

Yeah, I've used these before and they are cool, but I think it's more of a hassle switching between desktops for all my stuff.

These have been around for donkey's years. Surely everyone has either used them or heard about them at one time or another?

Cheers

I haven´t. Just descovered them some time in tha last few days. They don´t compare to "the real stuff" in linux, but it´s nice to have them. At last if you are me.

I haven't used them but I don't see a need too..... The taskbar works just fun if my desktop gets too cluttered. And if it gets too cluttered then I know I have too many windows open, lol.

Cheers,
