Decal Maker 6

THE solution for creating animated decal FX for FPSC from 16 individual images quick and easily! And you know what's the best part? It's now FREE.

Yup, life got the better of me, and I have better things to focus on then checking paypal and dealing with more tax complications. That and I'm pretty much leaving FPSC in favor of Torque, a far more serious game engine. And as my going-away present, I give you my grand trophy - Decal Maker 6.

Many of you may remember the previous versions of Decal Maker for overlays, and now you'll get the one I've promised for so long. Have fun guys!

Click Here to Go to Download Site

*On the issue of technical support - I'm no longer fully supporting this product (of course, since I haven't released it before, I guess I never have) and I am offering no guarantee for technical support. I am also not responsible for any damage that may come to your computer - use at your own risk - it isn't my fault if your computer crashes, your hard drive is wiped clean, Windows turns everything pink, or your CPU explodes

Have fun, and happy coding! (Then again, most of you guys aren't actually *coding* are you?)

Sweet! Thank you Airslide. Downloading now, and good luck with Torque. Hope you pop in every once in a while.

Does this mean you aren't entering the Phoenix contest?

This is very generous of you, Airslide! Looks like another fine 3rd party tool is available free of charge to the FPSC community. Have fun with Torque and I'll see you on the other side.

Glad you all like it

@Fred - Lol, you scared me a minute there, I went to FPSC chat to check on it (not even thinking of the my threads button, most boards don't have it there and I've been away for awhile) and I couldn't find it - I thought it either got deleted or somehow buried

When I get Vista and presumably X10 I may fly back in, but the state of the current FPSC is really annoying. I started it up last night and tried tinkering with my level and, after using an engine like Torque, its kinda depressing. Lol...well, when and if I do come back I'll probably be making some more tools (especially after X10 is released and I get my own copy - maybe I can make an app for particles ).

Have fun guys

That's why I usually post in the thread I am moving it.I figure most people opt to get the e-mail when someone posts in their thread so at least I can attempt to let people know.
My threads have gotten moved before and I didn't know it..
I am hoping I get to feeling better so I can play with the new toy you were kind enough to give to us forum members.

Try the cube 2 engine, I think its better than torque myself.
http://www.sauerbraten.org/
Its free as well, id be using it rather than fpsc dx9, but Im trying to bang out a game on the cheap and in the least amount of time, fpsc can do that 'IF' one works out of the box and builds non standard, ie stylised games, but yes its he most limiting game engine I have ever used, its a challange in itself making a game with it, I still think its possible in the right hands. I hope dx10 isnt the same engine with some post effects and shaders.

Thanks for the free gift.

For those of you getting errors - Have you all ensured the program was properly installed? I'm hoping I didn't forget an important file...anyways, make sure to check your preferences/settings (whatever I called the button, lol) and make sure the proper directory is set for FPSC. It might still be set to "Z:...babababa" as I have a second hard drive. How my second drive came up as Z I'll never know....

@Everyone - Thanks for the comments! I'll still be here to check up on what you guys are doing and try to trouble shoot any problems with decal maker, but I won't be doing much with FPSC. It's kinda unfortunate that I never really got to show off my best work...my fan games for Doom and Stargate were comparatively bland to most of my modernday projects that never really left the shadows.

EDIT: Looking at what should have been the release copy it should be okay directory wise - I'm gonna test it out real quick, might have made a stupid mistake...

EDIT 2: Seems to work, make sure you try to preview first and make sure the files are all being loaded in. The only other problem I can think of is a missing file needed for export or the improper FPSC directory.

airslide I too have been getting the same error, the preview plays fine and I have double checked the preferences to make sure the correct path to FPSC is selected.
The program does create a folder for the named decal but crashes with the above error message
It cant be that the program isn't finding the path to fpsc tho' since it does create a folder in there.
Pity I was gonna go on decal frenzy. Its not so bad for me tho' as I have an automated routine in photoshop.

Okay, can someone confirm the contents of the program directory?

They should be:

decmaker.exe
decaltemplate.txt
decalspec.txt
decal.dds
decmaker.exe.manifest
icon.bmp
launch.txt
license.txt
settings.ini
help directory (I won't list that)
export\particles.x
export\particles_D.dds

The only problem I can think of is if one of those bold files is missing...I'll download and see if the release was wrong.

Each image can be a number of formats, although it might have made some people's lives easier if I had an "All Supported Formats" selection...

Anyways, I think I know what the problem is. For now put your images in the same directory as decal maker and they should work. I'll go make some modifications and release the new build in a few...

Here's an updated EXE, should work.

I would also like to let you guys know that I may be re-writing the program from the ground up to make the process much easier, more efficient and expandable (for example - creating decals for bullet puffs), and generally nicer to look at...and hopefully do more than decals

EDIT: OR it may still have a windows interface but be written in Visual Express, depending on how hard/easy it is to grasp the thing...should mean far less memory usage.

EDIT 2: Although I really don't know if I want to get involved with that too soon...

It still throws the same error. It creates a file "decal.dds" in the current folder and it looks correct. It also created a folder in the Gamecore\decals folder with the proper name and _dm (xplosys_dm), but it's empty. It seems like it has something to do with creating or naming the decal file in the proper folder.

Best.

If the error message it was throwing me was correct it *should* be problems with saving the template. This was cause of a directory error which I thought I fixed - did you navigate to your FPSC directory via the browse? Dang, I was so sure I had it fixed....bleh....

EDIT: By template I meant the spec file...

EDIT 2: On another note, I was thinking of a new program design. It would probably look somewhat like Entity Workshop 2, but with more button space. If it works out how I have it planned, it would use a modular system that allows the functions of each button to be customized, allowing these different modules to do things ranging from decals to entities to segments. It would allow alot of functionality in the one program and if you wanted to add more customization or change something specific you could modify/create a module. Should be promising if I get around to it.
