Photoshop is better...

Never tried GIMP...but the fact that it is free,
and Photoshop costs lots of money...
Than i would say that Photoshop is better...
If not....well than, if i was GIMP...i would start selling it
for even more money that Photoshop...

Photoshop is easy to use...
You just have to follow some quick tutorials on the internet.
And than you can create almost any texture you want.

As for GIMP, sometimes i saw some tutorials with some great
end-results...
But not like Photoshop cant do it.

I would say, first try GIMP...since it is free.
And if you really really really hate it...
Than buy Photoshop.

if there was a graphic design top trumps set photoshop would be the one that you would always win with. I just got CS3, and it's the nuts. Drag and drop from maya straight into photoshop and paint textures. Nothing compares, but cheesecake is right, it's alot of cash, and if you aren't earning, then it's a total stretch.

CS3 is amazing, I just got it for my Mac. Tasty as anything.

I can't stand Gimp. I don't even know how to use it, and it bugs me too much to learn how to try, just because I love Photoshop too much.

Umm... I was given an old version of Photoshop 7 from my friends cousin because he got CS2. And I'm not over 18. He is the guy that got me started in game design. He's is trying to get a job as a texture artist for a big company.

Yep you are right about that!

Its so low actually, to download illegal copies of certain programs.
I mean, if people really like that product..
and it really helped them out...
Than i would say, just buy the full-version..
You will help them alot, since they helped you.

Same goes with TGC's products, Autodesk, etc etc..

Skulldigs.
Download GIMP...and once you made a hundred textures with it...
and your thinking of moving on a more "proffesional" program.
Than Photoshop all the way..
Also it has great 3rd party programs...like FilterForge.
Very easy, and you can use them all in commercial and non-commercial projects.

I use the Gimp,Texture Maker,Paint.net and occassionally MS paint even for texturing.
While Texture Maker did cost some money for the license I wanted the rest of those are free.
I would love to have Photoshop but my girlfriend demands that I feed her instead...I'll never understand her silly logic...
Paint Shop Pro is a decent app and is fairly inexpensive.

Please have mercy and use the search function.

I've used Paint Shop Pro (on version X now) for a few years, it's great and inexpensive. One of these days, I'll move onto Photoshop, when I get the money (it only costs around $1,000 if you're buying the whole suite; you can buy PS separately....though it's still close to $600).

I got Maya when I was back at uni, it was part of my course and was provided to the students under the Uni's licence, I've updated through that since then.

CS3 is from a company I worked for, who supplied it as part of the contract.

I agree that there's an awful lot of high end software being used by low end users, but I don't think you can say "people make crap models with planar textures, therefore they shouldn't own a highend product", because when I first got maya I made rubbish stuff, it's a case of practice.

I use Paintshop Pro, as well. KeithC's right. It is a good bang for your buck as well.

It all comes down to the user, in the end. Use what you can afford and get the best results with...

I can't say that I've had the privelage of using Photoshop...

I got the Gimp,
(anyone know why they called it that, it's kinda embarassing when my mate goes:"nice texture!What you use?"
Then I say"The, er, The Gimp."
Silence normally follows this until I explain what Gimp is.)
And it does me just fine,(but I am a noob),it's free, my sorta budget,lol, it does layering and alphas,etc....

It's all I really need and I'd say if you are just starting off, then the gimp is for you.
If your a "pro" then it's Photoshop, the pro paint program

You can tell i'm an old-school gamer, right?

In that one comment you are saying that everyone here is a non-wage earning child and a thief!

Perhaps you consider that you fit into that demographic but that doesn't mean that everyone else does too.
I own a copy of the full CS3 production suite but I didn't pay a penny for it. That doesn't make me a thief. It was given to me by Adobe having been a part of the debugging and translation team ... and I am definitely not a 'kid'.

Comparing Adobe Photoshop to Gimp is not a fair comparison. It is like comparing two forms of transport: Walking and a sports car. They both get you from A to B and therefore do a similar job but one is free and the other will cost you a lot of money. So, is it reasonable to compare walking with buying a new sports car ... of course not!

I think that's because nobody else felt like he was talking to them, or felt offended, or felt the need to disclose how we got the program. (I don't have it)

The ones who were offended (besides you) probably were the ones he was talking about and they chose not to reply.

You must admit that there is an abundance of high-dollar software which members here claim to have, and some of those members don't have a clue what to do with it. He was only stating the obvious.

Well I got Gimp, Photoshop CS3 and Paintshop Pro Photo X2 with many of there new plugins and I got paint.net with many good plugins with this to as a web designer I find myself doing a ton of graphic work. So a good image editing tool is very important to me.

Personal Observations are hands down adobe photoshop cs3 is top of the list best quality of this program is its compression and keeping the quality within the photo after the compression.

Second on my list is corels paintshop pro photo x2 this is as close to mirroring adobe photoshop pro cs3 but I have noticed issues with the quality of the image compression with this produce but can be corrected when you get into your prefrence settings.

Third on my list is Paint.net this is a very good program you can get alot of use out of this program and the interface is pretty user friendly in my opinion.

now fourth on my list is gimp. I do find this program very usefull especially with editing dds files (adobe does this also)I like the ease of use and since it is free it does make this program a tasty treat...

Now thats my list of the 4 programs I use. And I use all 4 of them alot. What I find myself doing is using multiple image editing platforms at the same time to get my final result simple because certian platforms has an easier flow when using them to get certian editing technic's out of the platforms.

So if you can afford it then I would suggest getting your adobe or if budget is the issue then look into corel but if money is tight then you got the latter two all programs are great and you can achieve your goals with any of them it is just a matter of what you like best.

Everyone should look to score Photoshop on ebay. You can save a lot of money that way. I'm using CS, so I'm several versions behind, but I have all of the features I need.

I say Photoshop too.
I only tried it out instead of buying it, but it was cool. (I need to get it)

Paint.NET Rocks, but it cannot handle the Alpha Channels for the DDS files, whic is needed for the Specular textures in X10.

GIMP is supposed to be all that, but as mentioned before it is hard to learn, and not very user friendly. (I thought so anyway)

While some people argue that the others can do what Photoshop can; I challenge them to open the _S file for the Alien Segment with them.

If you plan to use X10 then get photoshop, because it can handle all the textures now, and who knows when the others will get a plug-in.

The price is the main factor here.

GIMP = Free
Paint.NET = Free
Photoshop = $600+

I am using Paint.NET for my v1.xx stuff, but as I said before, I really need to get Photoshop for X10.

Yeah I tried that before, and I won the auction for like $60 or $70 or so. (oh I was so happy and excited...woohoo)
All I got was some kid selling me a KEYGEN to crack the password. (probably a trojan inside it too)
By the time eBay figured out he was a scammer, I had already paid him. (I pay as soon as auction ends)
So, they deleted his auction's post and sent me an email saying not to pay him. (2 or 3 days after the fact)
Good luck with the eBay approach. I recommend buying a retail version so you can register it in your name proper.

I'm a long time Gimp user, and I'll tell you flat out that the program is difficult to learn. It's difficult to learn because it is -- despite what some people have been saying -- every bit as complex and capable as PhotoShop, BUT does not have anywhere near the same level of documentation or huge tutorial bank to draw upon.

No matter what you want to do in PhotoShop you can readily find everything from documentation to video tutorials to experts ready to demonstrate the methodology. Such pervasive support structure simply does not exist for GIMP.

Now IF you do not have a fortune to spend and are not going to break the law and download a pirated copy of PhotoShop [personally, because I refuse to break the law, this is why I use the GIMP] then you would probably be better off learning to use a much simpler free program such as PaintNet, which does have a layers feature and is relatively users/learners friendly.

Eternal student in search of knowledge. But will settle for the occasional epiphany.

So by saying CS3, you mean the Flash 9 development program, right?

I like Photoshop over the GIMP. Simply because it's much simpler to use. I have only tried PS and the GIMP, so I can't form an opinion on the others, but I love PS. I've had it forever, so I'm familiar with it. Though, I have to use Elements 2, because I lost my copy of PS 7...

I learned Photoshop through my school which has Elements 2.0. I used that for a long time (came with my computer aswell, sort of sold that machine to me), tried the trial of CS2 and just couldn't get my head around it...the layout was completely changed.

Currently using Elements 5.0 as it came with my WACOM. Photoshop ftw.

Think I might have a solution to your problem conjured

This can convert .tga files, with alpha to dds with alpha. Very useful (I have to use it since Photoshop has issues with large dds files, like high res textures for Oblivion).

That looks promising, I'll have to play with it a little once I go back to using FPSC X10.
Right now I am working on something using the v1.08 (when it is stable), then I'll be going to work with X10.

Thanks anyway Avid, but I decided to go with PhotoShop anyway.
I have heard too many good things about PhotoShop to put off getting it any longer.
I went back to eBay just to see what was there, and ended up winning an auction for PhotoShop CS2.
I guess the eBay advice was good, because this is an unopened boxed version that has never been registered.
So, I got a good deal I guess as long as the thing arrives safely.
