I found a really neat website.

The site gives you a word and you find a synonym out of four choices, and each one you get right, it buys 10 grains of rice for poor people. It gets this money from little advertisements at the bottom of the page (which aren't annoying at all).

Its very fun to play, and it helps the world, too

Its strange that they can donate that much rice that easily...

That is beautiful. My performance was good, considering the fact that English is not my first language. I did reach eighty grains with no mistake. I shall make a favourite of this one.

Cheers.

400 rice grains donated. I feel good about myself. Might do more later Heh. It would be kinda funny to get a group of people together to farm this site for rice. Get on national news or donate so much rice the donators wonder what they got themselves into

You guys do know that 3 billion grains of rice is about 1/2 of a single rice paddy yield per year, right? But damn, 3 bil in 2 months?! Still not much to those companies, but enough to feed a few hundred starving Africans.

I donated >400

I got 1000 grains of rice in, first time. Benjamin showed me that site a while ago. I don't know if it really does or doesn't get donated. And for the possibility of it not getting donated I don't go there often.

Vocab Level 16 - It gives easier ones if you get one wrong.

Cheers,

I found the link in Gizmo's Support Alert Newsletter (It has links to freeware and interesting sites, etc).

I'm guessing that's part of their publicity, plus word of mouth. If you think about it, 10 grains of rice doesn't cost much. Very little, actually. They are most probably getting enough money to donate the rice.

I usually get around vocab level 30, where most of the answers are smart guesses

Aaron Miller - was that over a month ago? Because their site makes it seem they started last month.

Stopped at 1100, with a vocab level of 31, average of round about 30. Good, not great.

And Aaron, it is donated.
Hopefully not 10 grains at a time like some at college have speculated... dolts.

Wow I didn't know it will be this popular

I think all together I got about 800 grains, but I have dial-up ATM (I'm on vacation) so I can't do crap >.<

I think it would be cool to be able to register, and then it would record how many grains of rice you donated, and how many meals that makes, etc.

i think i hit level 13 at 130 grains before I missed one. For those who hit the 30+ levels right away, who did it without a thesaurus? I'm currently at 37, but I sorta started to cheat a little after 20.

Donated another 500, vocab level 30 this time.

I get about 80% right, it seems, but I really don't know most of the words, I can just make an educated guess from what sounds like the root word. Knowing Spanish helps too, since it seems to be more Latin based, which is what most of the higher level words come from.

You know you're a nerd when you enjoy playing a game where you learn vocabulary .

Do you guys realize how much 10 grains of rice is and how much it costs? Let's face it: 10 grains is less then 1 mouthful and costs practically nothing and you are bound to fail at least half the time. It's a very easy way to make money, you don't earn much from showing adds but they really aren't spending much either.

Screw it? They prolly'd be happy with 10 grains of rice.
On the other hand, it is kind of hypocrite to say that you're helping. If you want to help, just donate or send 10 dollar over.

No thesaurus here, but the idea that people could quite easily cheat like that did cross my mind.

@DA: 10 grains of rice is very little, yes. But freerice is every bit a group effort. Just look at the totals, and how they've been rising.

I know my views on this probably aren't going to be taken well, but quite frankly why is it our problem these people are starving?

Sorry if I don't feel all that charitable to those "less fortunate" and such, but seriously why should we consern ourselves with the problems of these people when there are those in our own country homeless and starving due to our own economies yet you know full well that most of you when you pass them on the street never give them a dime.

Ever actually been to any of these 3rd world nations? Noticed how they conduct their lives... personally I only give charity to help people out who have the common sense to actually put that help to good use.

You realise that Africa (biggest charity case) is where the majority of Sugar and Precious metals come from; goods that really should make them them among the richest nations in the world yet they're stricen with poverty. Why? Because there is so much corruption from western influences, our culture is too advanced for them to understand and handle, plus they multiply like rabbits.

The business' in those nations (given most are run by western corporations) should be forced to adhear to our laws.
Minimum wages, etc..

Hell just taking out their corrupt governments and replacing them with our own and our laws would protect the people; install a sodding welfare system on the backs of the corporations currently making a mint from their labour.

It wouldn't solve the problem, but atleast it'll drag them into the 21st century with the rest of us. Also would cost a damn sight less than this constant "charity" with no return. You can say what you want about the old British Empire; but just look at the nations we used to rule over.

Agentina, South Africa, India, Australia, Ireland, United States and Western Canada. How many of those are considered charity cases?
Alright so they've all broken free and declared independance, also most fought for their freedom from day one; but you can't ignore the influence of British civilisation on them.

Hell, I bet without the Roman invasion Britian would still be fairly 3rd world. Sometimes the best form of charity is domination; alright not every nation is accepting to such things as England has been but still it'd solve so many damn problems with world poverty.

There are special cases (like Russia) where charity from afar is a better option, but they know how civilisation works. Africans don't.. they just want to mimic us without understanding why our civilisations work.

I'd seriously suggest taking a trip there, our footprint is clear to see on people that just weren't ready for it. It's like giving a mobile phone to a teenager, they'll love being able to call people but they have no concept of how much calls cost.

It takes them years to finally get used to the fact it costs quite a bit to keep that level of communication. As they were just given it and take the service it provides for granted so when you take it away they fail to understand how difficult or sometimes even why they're constantly being cut-off.

How many grains of rice would you get for 1 USD? United Nations World Food Program isn't exactly buying the rice at a local food store, they get it much much cheaper. If everybody donated that little instead of wasting their time (time it money) on this site then I'm sure WFP would get more rice to hand out and the creators of that site would end up with no money at all.

Correct.

We should help them becouse no body else can. Imagine if you were one of thoase people. You would also like help. Its not tehre fault either is it!. But beggers on teh street they can be to blame. Unless there whole family has been homeless. They could have stayed on at school or got a job.

Quote: "You realise that Africa (biggest charity case) is where the majority of Sugar and Precious metals come from; goods that really should make them them among the richest nations in the world yet they're stricen with poverty. Why? Because there is so much corruption from western influences"

Well is it tehre fault its so corrupt, no.

Think of a situation like this.

Ypou live in Africa. Your poor without a house but a hut that is unsafe and could fall down any second. And the water you drink makes you feel ill. And food is low.

You would like help wouldent you?

And to know someone else in the world is using a computer having a good time not even caring about you. Throwing you inot the dirt.

How would you feel eh big buy?.

Also to help you could send £2 a month to a charity...though I am put off by the one that called me the other, God were they pushy, yeah 90% goes to the people yeah, yeah, but I didn't want to give them my bank details so immediately...they didn't seem to like that idea of 'me researching them' before I consider it and then went to brag about things they do.

Anybody else find that? I think that's a thing that puts people off, they also seem to play the 'guilt trip' to get you to donate there and then...For goodness sakes I do want to donate and help people, but you know just because I don't want to set up a direct debit yet doesn't mean I don't care. I was willing to pay the £2 a month when my next student loan comes in, but I wonder if there are better charities out there.

The good thing with this rice one is, you really don't have to do much to make some difference, sound a bit selfish, but if it means people use the website then it's a good thing and well if those people donate as well then awesomeness.

Yea its alot easyer to sit at a screen to help. The people who actually try to make money out of the sittuation by saying they will donate but keep it for them self i think is immorale and sick.

@DA: All I care is that I'm partaking in a fun little game where I learn new words and maybe someone far away gets a little something too. I otherwise wouldn't have the motivation to do pretty much anything about it.

The site also states that they make no profit from it. Whether that's true or false, I don't care either way. Something is better than nothing.

@Raven: That's all quite true. Though in the case that something productive was actually happening, a little charity wouldn't hurt. Though of course that isn't the case... and hasn't really ever been.

@SA: Guilt trips are the worst.
Those adverts on TV that show starving kids and such irritate me- it's not their fault; it's not mine either. Show it to the government- their government. I may make an effort to donate, but I'll be damned if it's not going to be out of the goodness of my own heart.
