A watermark on top of the screen, you can record movies that ar max 30sec, you can capture screenshots only in one format (i think .bmp)...

Make games, not war.

Also Taksi is more or less usable.

http://taksi.sourceforge.net/

That's not as bad as you think you said.

Make sure you get the lossless AVI codec with it

You could also dive head first and buy a capture card, that has video input to so you could record from your tv/consoles

I tried to use camstudio once.
Bad. It was jerky, slow and everything in full screen mode shrank.

Hence why I suggested getting the lossless AVI codec for it.
It encodes in real-time, is lossless (), and generally just kicks arse over any other codec for it.

Camstudio is what I use for desktop capture, but it's far too processor intensive for any sort of real-time game capture.

I'd highly recommend either FRAPS (it's $20 and extremely useful) or having a second system that take the output of the one running the game.

[edit]
Oh as far as Codecs go, currently WMV (Series 9-HD) and MOV (Quicktime Intel .268) are the best if you want everyone to be able to see the output.

Sizewise however I tend to use Xvid as it compressed extremely small with very little overall quality loss, especially when used with the DivX 6.x Codecs.

EDIT:

Doh! $299 is a bit steep

(tried to post before, got some error)
on the fan videos at gamespot, they usually blame video lag on fraps. Why so? I use fraps and love it, but apparently they must think there is a faster way to take videos for free. On fraps it says it saves it as a large file because it can't process all the information coming in at once to scale it down. I'm guessing thi is common with all video takers? (to fix it, use windows movie maker to make the file small)

Because Fraps sets the FPS itself. If you're using the free version of Fraps, then you can have maximum 30 FPS.

No problem! I actually happened across it on in one of the FPSC forums, I'm surprised it hasn't made it to the Geek Culture before now... maybe someone should start a new thread?
