Hello everyone,
Well I just wanted to introduce my self, my name is Christopher Ross and I am new to this community. Well I am also new to the DarkBasic Lang. I love to play games and I have wanted to make them for so long now, I have looked at different languages such as python and c++ and C# but I like DarkBasic alot. I come from using JustBasic and I was wondering, before I jump in to graphic game programing do you think it would be a good idea to make a txt rpg type game in DarkBasic are should I just go and work on making a tetris clone?

I wouldn't advise tetris to start off with.

There are some good tutorials on here - either work through TDK's here or go to the binary moon/monster hunt ones on TGC main site.

Snake's quite an easy game to make as well.

Text RPGs probably wouldn't teach you that much, as they don't have that many commands, whereas I'd start with something slightly more complicated to take advantage of the power of DarkBASIC.

Welcome to the forums, here a few tips,

(1). Don't act like Serjo Adjo.
(2). Please start out with pong, I had to learn this the hard way.
(3). Don't attempt an MMORPG or any other MMO.
(4). Don't start out the way I did (i.e. This Thread)
(5). Enjoy the forums and stick to one project at a time, I learned that the hard way as well.
(6). Use proper grammar please! Don't talk like this, (hallo! i wnt 2 make n ubr mmorpg. can some1 gizme teh codez?
(7). Don't ever make a religious or love life thread in Geek Culture. (I learned that the hard way).
(8). Always read the tutorials and stickies, sometimes they can have a load of information about 2D and 3D games as well.
(9). Need some help? Use the search button before asking questions.
(10). Want to play around or use code for your game, search in the Code Snippets or the Codebase.

These tips should get you to a normal TGC member. If you break one these tips you should be okay (as long is the tip isn't the one about me or Serjo).

Just so you know, Bluestar dies in book 5.

11.) Don't jump in to threads saying something completely random.

12.) Don't be like this guy: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=102028&b=2

LOL , and in book VII he comes back to life after a kind monk stumbles on his bones and resurrects him
I just read the thread from #12 of your post - it was awsomely halarious. Its too bad the thread is now too old to reply or I would have said that I'm sure he was the top dog of some second grade clubhouse.
If you know of anymore threads that are as funny as that one PLz do post them so that we can all laugh a little harder !

Well thank you everone for there response, my next question is that which is easyier as in programing to do a 2d rpg later down the road a 3d rpg later down the road, and also How many hours do you think it would take to make a decent to good rpg in 2d are 3d and also working a full time job some where else.

In answer to your question I think its much easier to do 3d games , especially RPG's for the simple fact that you dont have to deal with as many bitmaps. Its much easier to make or download a free model than it is to make sprites of characters, land masses, blocks, ect.
Coding is also much easier to make 3d than 2d.
as far as how many hours it would take that depends on how good you want your game to be - simply put , how many hours do you want to invest in it ?
And now this next line is not to disappoint you - 96% of all first projects on new compilers fail. this isn't nothing to be embarrassed about either its just a fact - so rather than jump into an all out huge project I suggest you start with simple things and work your way up. After a while when you have studied other programs and you feel comfortable about it and know exactly what you want then you can start a game project. tdk has some excellent tutors on here that will help get you going in the right direction - look for them at the top of the boards. if you need help with a particular subject or dont understand something then just ask people - there are plenty of people on the forums who will help you as long as your not a jerk or the leader of a second grade clubhouse (see above)

Indeed. Cherries are important. In any case, that guy is totally correct. It all depends on how good you want to make it. He really covered it all. He is wise.

Bluestar is also correct in suggesting that you start simple. I learned that one the hard way. Try making a Pong game, or Breakout, Space Invaders, Pac-man... just something to start you off, allow you to get the feel of programming a game, and then work your way up from there. I've been using DarkBASIC since 2003 and yet I'm only just now working on a Pong game.

I would like to point out something else - as far as your coding goes DB has the easiest and shortest syntax that there is. A good exmaple of this is that some time ago I did a game called missle might which is basically a 2d arcade game. After playing the game you might think it took tons of code but infact the size of the code for the entire game was only a mere 13.8 kb !

The great bluestar engaged in battle with several evil opponents until one hit him with a critical blow.

The monk was thinking what a powerful ally the great bluestar would be after him battling such prominent opponents.

@OBese: just because you're allowed to post your age doesn't mean you necessarily will. It's generally not that relevant. You don't get many requests for help saying things like:

Hey my programme keeps freezing when it tries to run this gosub. I'm 32 if that helps... could it be my age that's causing the problem?
