I have been having a lot of trouble with my computer.
It runs on Vista.
1.)Crashes for no reason every day
2.)internet explorer does not work right
3.)Won't let me buy songs off itunes.

Is there a way to dump everything off my system.

burn all your data to dvd's or external hard drive then format your hard drive, then dual boot xp and vista(if you absolutely need it) and posably a Linux distro if you want 99.99% stabilaty.

I highly doubt any OS could have that.

WinXP is pretty stable for me. Linux on the other hand is crap and crashes all the time. I don't know why anyone would want to use it other than anti-Microsoft dorks.

I use both ubuntu and xp. Both are quite stable (even though I have had an bluescreen in xp, which I haven´t in the other one). I think any difference often have to do more with hardware and drivers etc then the OS themselves. At last these days.

And when it comes to linux, it also depends on what dist you use. Ubuntu 7.05 was very stable for me. Ubuntu 7.10 is also very stable, but had some more problems then 7.04. Wouldn´t call it unstable though.

Personally I belive some linux dists are more stable then win. As an example, there exist machines that run under Debian that can run for years without restart or crash. But that does not mean that I concider windows to be unstable. Win can be very stable.

And about that only anti-ms people likes linux, that just not true. I like linux ubuntu (have never tried any other dist, so I can´t say anything about them) more then win because it falles me better in the taste. I find it, in my personal experiance, to be stable, easy to use, being secure etc. I may not like ms but that has nothing to do with what I feel about win. I like xp.

Just stop bashing win or linux, and respect the taste of others. Some like coffé, others like tea. I like tea. But I don´t know any coffé man that would bash me for it. Some like win, some like mac, some like linux, some like bsd. No reason to bash each other for that.

Ok, if that how you look at things, then I won´t leave more replys then the one I´ve already given (unless I really, really need to). Don´t like bashing descussions. They are not constructive. Goodluck ith the discussion, everyone.

EDIT:

And can we please stop arguing and help Tye instead? I can start an "Win vs Linux" thread if you like, and we can continue this descussion there. But please, keep to the subject here (I know I didn´t, and I´m sorry for that, Tye). A guy needs help, help him.

Sorry for the double post and for posting when saying I would not. But I feelt obligated to try and help tye.

Tye, this entire post is for you.

As someone above wrote, it can be an good idé to backup the stuff you want to keep on an extern hard drive or burn it to an cd or dvd. The you can always do an virus scan too, just be be sure no ugly stuff is among that material.

Tye, you can always check the drivers. They may not be very friendly with your hardware for some reason, and in that case it may be an good idé to try and update them.

You can try and reinstall vista, if you haven´t already. But before this, make sure everything you want to keep and everything that you need is backed up somewhere. It would be a pain to loose something important.

One other thing you can try is to go back to an previus version of windows, like xp or 2000. Alternatly, you can dual boot them. They may be more compatible with your system. In other cases, you can always try with an non windows os.

If you want to try linux, ubuntu is an good place to start. It´s not that hard to use. Otherwise, if you don´t want linux, there are always FreeBSD, Solaris and other oses to choose from. ReactOS could also be something to try, just note that it´s still an beta.

However, if you want to be sure you don´t make an mistake and choose an os you wouldn´t like, then there exist Virtual Box. It will allow you to test several oses on an virtual machine. This will make sure you cannot screw with your main system, but still try an os. Not that hard at all to use.

Anyway, I wish you goodluck. Hope your problems will be solved.

*I haven't read the other posts so what I'm typing could be complete bogus because someone else already said it

Tye, the first thing I would try is 'repairing' the system using the Windows installation CD. If that doesn't work, then I would recommend backing up only the things you need, otherwise the problem could carry over. Once you've done that, defrag your HD. Then format the disk and start as if you had just gotten your computer. I've had some issues with re-installing OS's on drives not defraged and formatted, so learn from my mistakes and do it the clean way -- not the quick way.

Best of luck,

Everything else you suggested I agree with, but it's kind of pointless to defrag and format. A defrag arranges the files on the hdd so that they are contiguous. Formatting the drive removes all files on the hdd, so you're basically rearranging your files to have them removed:/ A simple format is enough, no need to defrag beforehand.

NO! You must defrag! Or else windows will not know where to delete stuff from because it will not know where to find it!

Tye, too bad I could not help . Hope your problem get solved.

And you said that you had tried everything except for updating the drivers (which you have done now). So then you did try xp or 2000 on it? If so, did the problem remain, even with the other os?

I think you need to look up what a format does to a drive:/ I agree you should defrag if you weren't going to format a drive, but it's sort of useless to do both.

At least, so I hope in order to keep my assessment of Osiris' intelligence a bit above par.
