Electronica always helps me focus It allows you to drown out all outside thoughts, kinda like meditation, but, for programming.

My favorite programming tune is Virtualmismo's "Last train to the universe".

Quote: "even Verdi's Requiem"

Rhapsody in Blue does it for me Also, Carmina Burana.

Anything repetative really. Matt Darey's "Nocturnal" podcast offers some great programming music. http://www.mattdarey.com/v2/

(if you can ignore the super flaming intro from his podcasts)

I'm just listening to that 'Last Train to Universe' now. Reminds me of Tyrian for some reason! Anyone old enough to remember that?

because you are coding to music, you take on the personality of the music in your coding. It makes it a bit like a film (especially if you have some action-like music) and you are the main character who has to code this program that will save the universe
When Nintendo were making Donkey Kong, they played the game music while they were working to keep the team in the same mindset.

I haven't tried this with coding as I find it hard to concentrate but I'll try some of the tracks you guys listed

Radiohead, Bjork, Jeff Buckley, or Sigur Ros when I'm doing design work, quieter stuff that's more ambient so I can focus on giving you people smiles . But when I'm writing code I usually crank up Blur, or older Radiohead (OK Computer or older) and work to that... something with a faster pace so it feels like it's going by faster lol. Yes, I'm not a big fan of coding

I don't do anything without music, except for classes where they won't let me have it on.

But when I code, some of my favorites are(by CD):

Amon Amarth - With Oden On Our Side
Nightwish - Once
Static-X - Any of them
Tool - Any of them

I could list music for hours, so I just wont...but yeah...coding without music is hell for me, have serious trouble focusing(which applies to most things I do, music helps me focus) Generally Nightwish works the best for me until I get angry, at which point Static-X or Amon Amarth is better

Everything I usually listen too. I honestly need music to work on anything, but unless the music plain sucks, everything will do.

While coding I try to just listen to anything instrumental. Lyrics get in the way while coding just as they would while reading. While I'm modeling though, anything goes.
