I've managed to get my hands on a 60GB PS3, but it doesn't have a power cable, and they cost around £11. Can I use a computer lead instead?

If a PC power lead (kettle style) will fit into it, then it will support it.

If not, Sony would have changed the design so that a kettle lead would not fit. Standards are used for a reason, for one thing qualifying a new style of power lead would cost money, that's why kettle leads are used for so many things these days.

I suppose that because the power unit is internal it doesn't matter too much about the lead right?
Do you know if that would void the warranty by using a kettle lead?

The official Sony lead is probably just a kettle lead with a Sony emblem and an extra £8 slapped onto the price. I doubt very much that it would invalidate any warranty, I mean if the machine takes that sort of plug, then you should be able to use that sort of plug regardless of who made it.

If Sony made their branded kettle lead work any differently to the standard, then they would be liable for any damage caused because of it - when companies use standard cables they have to abide by the specifications. The irony is that you could probably go buy a kettle with lead for less than the price of an official Sony kettle lead.

be careful though, most games consoles come with power converter box thingies. For the life of me I can't think of the simple everyday term one uses for them, not adaptors but like, it's the thing using resistors and stuff to control the flow of power. This is gonna bug me all night.

I highly doubt sony makes you use a power adapter. Power adapters went out with the n64

Is it a Transformer? (I had to capitalise that )
The PS3's power "thing" is internal so Jeku is probably right. Thanks for the thinking in my direction though

Just to make sure you can always check the input voltage it says on the back, if it's 240v (or whatever mains voltage they use where you live) there shouldn't be a problem.

Wow is that get my hands on, as in bought a new one? If so, talk about bad: I mean, not only do they expect the average punter to scrape up 300 odd quid or so, but they also expect the power lead to be bought separately :/

Well you both have four character names, angry face avatars, and a mod sticker.

You mean like the brick hanging out the back of the Xbox360?

New ones come with the lead. And a wireless sixaxis controller. And a USB lead to charge it. And a manual...
I can't think why it wouldn't be supplied with a lead unless it was ripped out of someones living room while they were out (just kidding).

The GameCube, Wii, 360 and PS2 Slim all still use external power supply units.

The PS3 though uses a standard 13amp three prong cable similar to the PC. Most should be compatible (much like the PS1 and 2 used original units were compatible with stereo box leads), however make sure you fit the correct fuse as from experience with the older consoles they generally go pop if you let too much power in, and will not work without enough.

Sony transformers often are quite crappy and useless.

Shouldn't the console itself have sufficient fuses? The cartridge slots on the DS have power rails with fuses, for goodness' sake.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

Sony are cheap buggers
They only bother adding quality in their "remake" generations they release.

The PSOne and PS2Slim both have much sturdier cases, better quality plastic, components, etc.. all for a fraction of the price of the original consoles.

Something about how Sony do things really, but if you want a good quality built PS3; I'd suggest waiting until the "slimline" console in about 2-3years.

Hmm, I've only had my PS3 give me problems once when it froze during Uncharted. Otherwise it's the most reliable console I have now (hardware-wise).

Mine has a habbit of freezing when playing old PS2 games online, or if it feels like it but again while playing PS2 games.

PS3 games generally just lag and drop frames alot, might be I've got it set to the top resolution (1080i) which it might not be able to handle too well.

Might get uncharted after christmas as it looks to be good fun. Naughty Dog have made some nice games in the past.

Thanks guys I have the PS3 now and it's great.
I'm using the power lead from my old computer and it's fine.
I bought Assassins Creed and PES 2008, very impressed with both but I don't like the sci-fi idea in Assassins' Creed, why can't it just be a straight medieval game? It seems exactly like Xeno's game idea Hassassin haha
I'm glad I finally chose to get the PS3 instead of the XBOX, it's a classy beast Although I am feeling the "lack of good games" syndrome, anyone recommend some good ones?

Hmm that's what I run it at too, with no issues as of yet. And by the way the PS3 supports 1080p.

It also supports 1080i, which I prefer as I like the softer natural aliasing.

Haha, only if you fancy throwing your controller throught the TV.

I'd say some good titles (not great mind) are Rachet and Clank, Heavenly Sword (interactive movie play thing, but still entertaining) and Motorstorm.

Other than that, just go online and checkout the remakes and arcade titles. Most of them are quite enjoyable.

Argh I'm seriously disliking Ratchet & Clank purely because of the big gap between checkpoints. Also, it has unskippable cut-scenes. Wow, welcome to 1997

I mean the n64 put an end to having a power adapter on the outlet end. Previous to that it seems like all the consoles had the giant brick on the outlet, which sucked big time.
