Is it just me or are military helmets used a lot in marketing? Especially on DVD/game boxes.

These are the only two I could remember so if you're bored you could post some more up .

"They are used a mighty lot but I can't remember more than 2 of them" sounds... paradoxal.

Rifles change, BDU's change, but the helmet has stayed esentially the same since WWII. It's an easily identifiable object that immediately associates your brain with war. Although I don't think it's really used a lot, not that I can think of really.

And in these two examples, the focus isn't really on the helmets themselves. In the cover for FMJ, the focus is intended to be aimed at what's written on the helmet, and the peace symbol on the pin thing... a major observation of Kubrick's in the film and a hint at the thesis he's going for with that movie. In the Resistance image, it's not about the helmet as much as it's about the death and destruction and carnage all around... the helmet is sort of an afterthought, making those viewing it think "war must have done this." Really, helmets in marketing are just devices to quickly indentify the audience with some feeling or vibe or setting.

@Matt
That makes sense.
I really like the Resistance box art, it makes you wonder what has happened. So much box art depicts the action taking place, it is good to see the aftermath of the action for once

Perhaps it's to symbolise the military significance of the game - a helmet suggests soldiers.

The helmet is a very old thing. The trick is to get one that is very hard. It's nice to have a piece of metal on your head sometimes...although these new high density "plastic" motorcycle helmets are pretty nice (and bullet-resistant)...

It's nice having a military shaped helmet. I've got two motorcycle helmets (from my motorcycling days), a regular style "full face" helmet with a visor that is clear (but it blocks my peripheral vision) and a half-helmet. I prefer the half-helmet, so much that I actually enjoy wearing it when I ride, even if I'm riding somewhere (off-road or in another state) where I don't need to wear a helmet...I like wearing armor when I'm motorcycling! (I got some kevlar too, it was pretty sweet. $400 on ebay, and I verified its authenticity. Israeli Kevlar Vest, to be exact) Kevlar slices through the wind nicely, and although I never fell on the kevlar it probably would have made a great slide-pad. (I did fall in a sweatshirt and shorts once...cut my leg up pretty bad, and one guy said I flew 6 feet into the air (I went over the handlebars after applying too much front brake) and then the lady who was there too said I flew like 15 feet into the air. Anyways, I landed on my helmet (intentionally) then flipped around a few times from helmet to feet, then slid on my butt for a while. I think I may have damaged some tendons too, but all my bones were okay. The motorcycle was okay too, although it sluffed a mirror.

Anyways, to get back on topic, I like the half-helmet more, which surprisingly resembles the old military helmet. I wouldn't want a full face metal helmet, so I assume medieval people wouldn't want one either - perhaps the modern military helmet is a very old design? Also, if I just had one piece of armor...

you landed on your helmet intentionally? OK maybe it's protected from getting cut up, but your entire weight on your neck like that probably isn't the best idea...

Oh yeah and back on topic, just because helmets are on a lot of covers doesn't make them the focal point; there are loads of covers with noses on as well, doesn't necessarily mean the game's about noses...

In fact i've just made a rather attractive and not rubbish at all collage of a handful of games with noses on the cover. Some even have several noses.

I'm not sure what this proves, that I have a point, or that I just have too much free time...

EDIT: I was going to circle all the noses for you, but then I decided to leave it as a little game for you. Spot the nose or something. Could be quite fun. Or maybe I just forgot to do it. Lack of beer probably. Man I need a beer... they're actually calling to me; I keep involuntarily turning my head and looking at them. Seriously I swear I can hear them singing. Oh go on then... Just the one...

Helmets are a common symbol, pretty much everyone knows what they represent. This alone makes them good for advertisements and game box covers. However they also do not reveal anything except that the topic is war or violence or fighting, so they can attract a broader audience than, say, a gory picture. Even if that is what the game is about.

Yes, but it could also suggest hamburgers. It all boils down to what people associate with the object. Not everyone has the same experience with and knowledge about something to see the same connotations. For example, where i see the buddhist luck symbol, other people might see something else.

In this case, a camouflaged helmet with bullets attached makes it pretty apparent it has something to do with war. You might still find a person or two in this world that thinks of something else when they see it though. They might think of "crazy-bob", who lives across the street and always picks up his mail wearing such a helmet.

The Fallout games have helmets (not sure about the 3rd one though, is it out yet?)

The Resistance cover I think is mostly about the skull in the helmet, which makes you think a bit.

There are far more faces on covers then there are helmets. The few helmet covers out there aren't enough to be anything special.

Are there any other inanimate objects on covers?
I can't think of any, that's why I thought helmets were a bit strange.
Once again I am amazed that one can make a thread about pretty much anything on here and get an in-depth analysis .
@DB
Noses are more common than helmets though, if you show something like shoes or hamburgers then I'll be impressed

Right that's a challenge...

And Grandma, you get a web-beer I could only see 18 properly... You obviously have far superior nose-recognition skills than me.

LOL

Thanks. The 3 last noses are questionable though. Like the one in the GTA pic, the dude driving the car. And then there's the two in the top-right corner of the Street Fighter cover. Good thing opera has that zoom function.

Anyone hear about the health and safety person who was sent to hospital because a safety helmet fell on his head?
