...Am i correct in saying, that if somehow you could keep the cpu at room tempreature all the time, or even completeley freeze it, you could overclock the cpu infinitaly (or to the motherboards top limits)?

CPU: AMD X2 6000+ 3.0ghz GFX: NVIDIA BFG Geforce 8800GTS 640MB OC-550mhz core RAM: 2048mb

Well you could in theory I guess, but as soon as the fan dies....

No. The electrons cannot be made to move quicker, meaning there is a theoretical limit somewhere. You could overclock and overclock and overclock and then suddenly the system would become unstable as the internal timings of the chip would mess up.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

Oh ok. But still, it would be overclockable by an awfal lot. No?

there have been some projects with liquid nitrogen coolers where cpu's have managed to get between 4 and 6 ghz, but i cant imagine them even running pong safely, and some of these claims are just hoaxes, i'll leave you to do the research.

speaking of overclocking, the other day i got an AM2 motherboard, but didnt wanna get the phenom just yet, so i got the X2 3600+ (natively 2ghz), and a standard heatsink/fan (£6.99 including VAT), but realised this was slowing my RAM down, as it's PC2-8500, which requires an FSB of 267mhz, while my cpu was limitting it to 200 (with *10 multiplier), and hence a massive overclocking project entailed. seems this 2ghz cpu, with a standard heatsink/fan, can be pushed well beyond 2.7ghz (thats a 35% overclock!), however, it had a habit of cutting out/becoming unstable after i'd played a game for a few minutes, so now it's on 9* multiplier @ 2.56ghz, so only a 25% overclock, but still better than nothing, and at leats my ram operates well, it's currently at 2mhz overclock.. i couldnt get it to 1066mhz excactly.

oh, forgot to mention, the CPU temperature only rose from 16 to 19 celcius, and after gaming it's at about 25. can't wait to test out the phenoms limits when i get a descent cooler for it too.

Also, ive heard at remedey, for the testing of alan wake, they overclocked a system to 5.7ghz. which is good.

What do you think about the phenom processor, ive heard its not too great in its current state

aye, thats why i put off buying it, but i have faith that it will kick off eventually, once they fix these bugs. I've got the AMD spider setup waiting for the phenom, once i have the faith and money. I'm even thinking of setting up a business specialising with AMD spider setups.

i think they could become the next popular gaming setup, before everyone wanted alienware, once phenom gets fixed and the 790FX motherboards come down in price, everyone will be wanting one of these, i wanna jump on the bandwagon ready, and if the plan totally fails, well, what will i have to lose? £10 for a website hosting and putting posters up around manchester city? pah! something i'll definately persue.

Really no one knows what would happen if you kept the CPU at the same temperature and kept over clocking it more and more. There are theories of what would happen but since we can't get the CPU to stay at a constant temperature we can't exactly test them.

16 degrees celcius? How cold is it in your house?

lol, my cpu idles at 42c and thats lower than it used to (56c) since I applied Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease, between the cpu and the heatsink/fan assembly.

my old pc would makemy bedrom the warmest room in the flat, but this pc fills my room with a cold draft. here's the reason why:

2 front, one back, optional side and cntre (as in, behind the hdd bays), and that area of grating on the top? yup, 20cm fan. you'd also be amazed at how quiet it all is..

i still don't see how all that can get you down to 16 degress celsius... fans do not directly lower the temperature of the air, they only increase the rate that your equipment dissipates heat... so unless you have some AC running in your case(which DOES lower the temperature of the air)... then your room would have to be pretty chilly

We should all live in antarctica and run our computers there.... UNISON DEVELOPMENT ANYONE?

On that note, I heard if you put dry ice directly on the mother board, you can lower the temp by a whole lot. I heard someone was able to overclock their computer by 2-3 GHz doing that.

Cheers,

It's pretty cold in the UK my 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo overclocked to 2.75Ghz on the standard cooler don't even make it above 30 degrees. My other 2.0Ghx overclocked to 2.5Ghz wierdly makes it to 35 degrees.

When heat rises electrons jump and make your code crash.

You can also run out of power like my graphics card. I've got a MSI 8600GT OC running at 675/1700 (GTS is 675/2000) runs fine. I can keep overclocking to 700/1700 and Lost Planet runs fine, Crysis Crashes, and Bio Shock did some wierd screen stuff. Temprature read 60degrees but I guess there was no more power left in the PCI-e slot.
