Hey, as we all know there are 3 dimensions in space. As (most) programmers also know, there are 3 levels of programming languages, machine code, assembly, and 3rd generation stuff like basic. Could it have something in common, I mean, you can't imagine a 4d shape, it's impossible for our minds. Personally it is also hard for me to imagine a 4th generation programmign language. Could this have somestrange connection, or is it a coincedence?

If you wanted a 4th dimensional shape it would move through time, so you wouldn't be able to see it.

Good news everyone! I really am THAT good...

There are such things as 4th Generation Programming languages. Commonly reffered to as 4GL's these are click and play tools where you do more clicking than typing.

These include such things as WYSIWYG html editors, Click and play games makers, database utilities and countless other frivilous programmes that should never have been written.

The point of my diagram is a cube squished on a piece of paper moving through time (the 4th dimension to us) squished on a piece of paper.

Not another muti dimensional topic, this causes all kinda of flames.

Personally my thoughts on mutiply dimensions is way differant that what most people think, it has the possiblity of infinate dimensions.

a 4d representation would have to include all posible forces that can act on an object. either their energy transfer or physical force, either that or a line with the movement plotted.

Beleive me, i am the only person in my class that can remotly visulise 4D, we had a smart arse cover teacher from a uni try to explain. It was Sooo anoying as no one else got the basics so he was going over and over.

But using 3 white boards and a special computer program on the projector did not help em much.

Whats the 5th dimension?

Oh and if you count time as a dimension then it is possible to time travel back. In quantum physics (i think) time traveling will result in you seeing nothing as matter can only exist in one plase at the same time, present time. But then you need to define present time in order to get back, very very accratly.

There are some other questions, like if you were back in time (30 secs say) and would you always be 30secs behind? or would you stop there? If you went forwards would time catch up? or would it catch up and pass? or would you stay infront?

Ahh the questions

Yes I can, and I don't mean andrew11 or Martyn's stuff either. I can imagine a shape in any number of dimensions. You just have to imagine how your shape goes from 1d to 2d and 2d to 3d (like line to circle to sphere, or line to square to cube). Then you can work out how it would go to 4d.

you just have to be able to 'see' where it will be at a certain time.

in simplistic terms

"If you wanted a 4th dimensional shape it would move through time, so you wouldn't be able to see it"

In which case we could SEE it, but we could only SEE 3 of its' dimensions. A bit like looking at a person through a TV screen, where you only see 2 of its 3 dimensions.

The 5th dimension... hmmm... any ideas?

You know, i have been looking around for a long time, on the internet, people argue there is a 5th dimension but they do not know what it is. Even still, if we can't even utilize the 4th dimension, how in the hell do we excpect to utilize the 5th?

4th Dimension is Space
5th Dimension is Time

You can percieve Space & Time, but you can't tangeble view it with your eyes ... as it is only a perception rather than a tangeble reality this is why it is said that we can only see 3Dimensions

If you watch a Video tape though you can quite clearly percieve Space & Time when you watch frame by frame of say a Car moving at speed.
You see 2 Cars (Time) and you can see them blurred together (Space)

"The ten ineffable Sephiroth have ten infinitudes, which are as follows:

The infinite beginning and the infinite end;
The infinite good and the infinite evil;
The infinite height and the infinite depth;
The infinite East and the infinite West;
The infinite North and the infinite South;"

-THE SEPHER YETZIRAH (The Book of Formation)
-First book of THE QABBALAH

According to that passage the universe is made up of 5 dimentions, 3 for space, one for time and one for what I think is free will.

Not suprisingly, there are ways to model all with a computer.

I used to do research on all of this, you cannot see another dimension, well you can, but it'll appear in 3 dimensions (I meant you can't see higher than the third dimension). So let's pretend we live on a piece of paper (got this outta a book), if a sphere popped up in the 2d world we'd see it as a circle gu who could get bigger and smaller (by moving up and down, impossible in 2d world). Although this is interesting the chances of us ever seeing a 4th dimensional world are very slim, and at that, how the hell would we know if we were seeing it in 3 dimensions.

Just my 2 cents...

Raven. The fourth dimension isn't space, because space are the three first dimensions

In fact there are much more dimensions, according to the theory of nodes and strings. but a human could only imagine the 6 first of them, the other can only be obtained mathematically.
The three first are simple, the 4th is time, 5 and 6 can be seen like the three of space, but as time: that means, we can see time as three dimensions, that's why some people think we could travel through time with these (which assertion not fully correct is)
