Hey all,

I just purchased a new rig because my 3-year old laptop is showing its age. Because I want a certain degree of "future-proofiness", I've decided to go with a desktop in which I can upgrade. Here's what I've put into this badboy (all prices in CDN):

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Quad Core Processor LGA775 Kentsfield 2.40GHZ 1066FSB 8MB Retail Box $264.99

Scythe Ninja Plus REV.B Heatpipe Fanless Heatsink AM2 LGA775 S478 S754 S939 W/ 120MM Fan $31.99

Antec Sonata Plus 550 Mid Tower ATX Case Silver Black 3X5.25 1X3.5 4X3.5INT 550W Front USB & Sound $145.98

LG G-H20L-S10 Black DVD+RW 20X8X16 DVD-RW 20X6X16 Lightscribe INT SATA DVD Writer OEM $33.99

Western Digital Caviar 750GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB 8.9MS Hard Drive 3 Year MFR Warranty $153.99

G.SKILL F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ PC2-8000 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1000 CL5-5-5-15 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit $114.99

ASUS Maximus Formula LGA775 X38 ATX DDR2 2PCI-E16 3PCI-E1 2PCI 2GBLAN SATA RAID 1394 Motherboard $255.99

EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800GTS Crysis Edition 670MHZ 512MB 1.94GHZ DDR3 PCI-E DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card $359.99

Microsoft Windows XP Professional X64 Edition SP2C OEM $150.33

BenQ G2400W 24IN Widescreen Black LCD Monitor 5MS 1920X1200 1000:1 Senseye HDMI DVI VGA $354.99

Express Coverage - with "ZERO Dead PIXEL" Exchange (See Terms & Conditions for Details) (26580) $17.75

What do you think? That's a huge screen--- 7" larger than my current one! And hey, at least I get Crysis for free.

I will dual-boot XP 64-bit and XP 32-bit for maximum compatibility. I'm not yet ready to jump into the Vista train.

If you added how much your video card and CPU cost, that's about how much my entire computer was

Modelled and rendered in Blender. Free software ftw.

Thats a "factory overclocked" gts 8800gts 640 right?
Be careful, thes cards run hot (I have an overclocked 8800gts 320) and the nvidia drivers for this chipset do not properly ramp the fan duty cycle for the card under stress. You may have to run your fan at 100% manually, or use riva tuner 2.06 to build a custom gpu temp monitor, that alters the fan duty cycle correctly. Thats what I had to do since my 320 was over heating out of the box in newer games like tf2, hl2 ep2 etc. Riva sorted it for the time being.

how can you run x32 and x64? They require 2 different CPUs!

Actually, it's a new kind of GTS with better cooling, the downside is that it's only 512MB.
Jeku's rig is close to pwning mine, but not quite..
The only difference is I have Kingston RAM and 2 GTS G92's..

:/ 512mb is more than plenty on a gpu >.< Spoiled kids you are

*cries running his 8400gs*

Instead of buying a gfx card, I ended up buying some nice 5.1 speakers

nice, i've just built a new system too but not quite in the same league as yours though (tries to stop drooling)

24" hp w2408h monitor, 1920x1200, 5ms, 1000:1, insane brightness (i have it set to 0 in the monitor settings)
this is the most stylish and expensive bit (~£300) (24" really is awesome isn't it?)

athlon x2 5000+ black edition (unlocked multiplier, should be good to 3ghz but i haven't pushed it that far yet, stock is 2.6) (~£80)

2gb ddr2 XMS2-5400 (667) at 4,4,4,12 (or it will be when i've convinced my motherboard that that's what it should be) (~£27)

amd/ati hd3850 265mb (£91) (the 512mb version just wasn't worth the £30 more)

ECS KA3 MVP motherboard (~£45) (2 x16 pci-e, 1 x1pci-e, 2pci, 6sata, crossfire compatible, not great quality but feature packed, esp like the optical spdif to my amp for the hifi)

x-fi music (£50)

i'm just using my old hard disks, 200gb and 320gb sata drives, and an old case and psu (not the plastic crate in my sig though)

AMD athlon 64 3000+, 1GB ddr400, 720GB total hdd, ati radeon X1900gt 256mb (pci-e) 17" tft(@1280x1024).

Argh, I didn't know the video card wasn't the "best", but oh well. My buddy writes hardware reviews for a website and gets a whole bunch of gear sent to him for free, and he planned out this rig for me. I basically said I want it to run absolutely everything now and a year from now. Hopefully it will

It's still not ready. In 4-6 business days I'll have it at home. The store is one of the cheapest in my cities, and they're very busy during the Boxing Week sale.
