That "good intros" thread made me think about old game intros, and I wondered whether people have favourite game intros they remember. If so, see if you can find them on youTube and link them up!

I think my fave old skool intro is UFO: Enemy Unknown. I watched it every time I played that game, cos at the time it was quality.

Also, the original Carmageddon intro was brilliant. So many subtle jokes and plugs in it:

Anyone got anymore?

Terra Nova's intro. Also Mech Warrior 2's. I don't have time to look up the intros though. I'll be back as Arnie says.

Hmmm, I'm sure there have been a few really good intro's I can't remember at the moment, three that do come to mind:
* Thief 2
* Jet Force Gemini (though I can't remember if this actually played when you started up the game or only after you started a new game).
* Silent Hill 2

Oh boy! Sleep! That's when I'm a Viking! | Super Nintendo Chalmers!

Half-life

Effortlessly creates such an amazing atmosphere without really doing much besides transporting you on a train. Great intro, great game.

EDIT: Annoyingly, that video (and all the others) lack the haunting music that is present in the actual intro of the game, so it's slightly less effective than I described.

I forgot about HalfLife. That was amazing at the time, although it's kind of a game level and not an intro, since it's interactive. Was awesome though.

Wartorn's Dominican is based on the human main cruiser in that intro.

Metal Gear: Solid... I dunno, something really jumped out at me as cool with the credits rolling while you played through that lower level. Half Life had a cool intro as well, I sort of mimmicked the HL intro in Pod 9. I love that concept of putting players in the intro, as opposed to just rolling an FMV like so many games do.

Ah yes, MGS. How could I forget that. It doesn't beat the above three for me, mostly because I don't really think MGS has an 'intro' in the common sense of the word. It's more like a short introduction movie with interactive tutorial with credits rolling over.

Last Blade 2

Theory is when you know something, but it doesn't work. Practice is when something works, but you don't know why.
Programmers combine theory and practice: Nothing works and they don't know why.

Ah, old game intros. Thats more like it. These days you can practically make a film as an intro. Not quite the same...

But I would say Another World's intro totally blew me away when I got it on the ST. Was a real jaw dropper at the time.

Cheers

Was going to post Day of the Tentacle but Jeku got it first.

Sam and Max hit the road Be sure to watch the whole thing, skip the road part if it's not to your liking.

Another world / Out of this world Probably the most cinematic game ever made. AFAIK Out of this world contains 1 or 2 more levels. If you've never played you should definitely find it.

I always liked the intro to Another World, or Out of this World as it was known on the SNES, this video has a funny commentary, viewer discretion is advised etc etc:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_3tLULZ6Aw

Might not seem very impressive, but when it first came out it was the classiest intro ever, the use of polygons provided very smooth animation, we only really had 2D intros before that, some were nicely done (like the Bullfrog games for instance), but this was just very classy compared to the usual jerky 2D ST game.

I have to agree about Half Life and Battlefield 1942, both very cool intros, I mean the Half Life intro goes on for ages but it's fascinating, totally blew my mind when I first saw it.

I don't have too many favourites, but Dungeon Keeper 2 which Fallout already posted (or that might have been the intro for Dungeon Keeper 1), and Dawn of War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UID6LEzvRRo)

Call of Duty 4
I liked the general layout. It describes the game quite a bit, and really pulls you into the story.

BattleField II
Interesting effects, animation, and a good view of what the game is like. I also love the musical score for BFII the most out of all of the BattleField games. One thing I didn't like about the engine, though, was the crappy use of ragdolls.

Deus Ex: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CbYTVfM4amc

The brilliance of that intro is that, as you progress through the game and learn what's going on, and learn who's controlling what and so on, the intro seems to change its meaning. The first time you see it you have no idea what's going on, except two freaky guys with incredible voice-actors are plotting something. By the end, it all fits nicely into place. I must have watched it four or five times throughout my play-through, and each time it seemed to mean something slightly different.

I'm not actually a Kiwi, I just randomly thought it up one day.

Yeah, that's true, but I don't really think the intro is that good. It didn't really create a setting or atmosphere, contrary to the game itself which sets itself brilliantly. The only thing I like is that you visit every location from the intro and end up at the start.
