Welcome to the WIP for Cryptic Cross-World, a game where you have to have your wits (and intelligence) about you to succeed. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I was hoping to drum up some support and get some suggestions and criticism. Here is a list of what is happening with regards to the production of Cryptic Cross-World:

( = DONE!, = WORKING, = SOON!)

Game name
Characters
Levels
Objectives
Story
Level decor
Shaders
Side objectives
Level timing
Sounds and music
Menus/saving and loading

and a lot more besides.

The background of the game is: You are in a place of many worlds, in which you have to enter mini-levels to complete certain objectives in the time limit. You can't move onto the next until you complete one. Any time you have left at the end of each level is banked and banked time can be used in a few different ways:

Primarily for the final level, which will involve travelling back and forth through the levels to complete a huge objective (objective at this point is not known)

Use time to purchase items which will help you complete more difficult tasks

Travelling between worlds to play levels again (after completing level first time, time limit is decreased)

The game at this time has 4 levels (no home worlds yet), and it looks pretty primitive, but the gameplay comes first, detail comes later. As of today (15/1/08) I am close to completing the fifth level (out of possibly 100), and once I've completed the fifth level (hopefully in the next few days or so), I'll compile a demo version and upload it here. Criticism and suggestions are accepted. The game does look pretty primitive at the moment, but that's because I'm just building the backbone for now, and it should look better soon.

(P.S. If you don't feel it's ready for a WIP, I wasn't sure either. I just know that creating a WIP and starting the ball rolling will motivate me to continue with the project!)

(Apologies for the edge of the screenshots. I tried copying them again but I keep getting the same problem with the edge of another one appearing on it! Stupid Photobucket!)

It appears to be further along than a lot of WIPs, but I'd like some details. What's the goal of the game? Why is the title what it is? Whats the story? What kind of 'objectives' will there be?

I think building the backbone is a LOT more important than fussing over details. And I think this constitutes a WIP: after all, you've finished 5 levels.

Story details would be nice (although it sounds more like the story is "finish the game!") I like the idea of using time as a currency, though. Could you maybe implement slomo (using the sync command I guess) which would affect time in yet another way? (Apart from adding time up after a level, and spending it)

I'm not actually a Kiwi, I just randomly thought it up one day.

I'm glad you asked that, tha_rami. It reminded me of what I forgot to put in my first message! The goal of the game is, obviously to complete all levels. I haven't quite figured out what shall happen at the end of the game, nor the basis of the story, though I have a few ideas. The last level will be huge, very difficult and will use a timer based on the amount of time that has been 'banked' by completing other levels, i.e. if a level has a timer of 60 seconds and the player completes it in 50 seconds, 10 seconds go into the bank. The player can go back into levels and complete them again and again to bank more time. The title (I don't know why I forgot to put this in the first message!) is Cryptic Cross-World because the player has to travel (or cross) between different worlds to complete different objectives, this may be getting a code for a door or safe that is in a different world, for example, and it's called 'cryptic' because a lot of the objectives in the levels will either have cryptic clues to help solve them or there may be no clue at all and it's up to the player to decide how to go about it. The objectives will be a range of things, I have drawn up objectives for around 8 levels so far, 5 of which have been modelled and available in the demo version I'll release soon. (I'm very bad at modelling! But I'll make the levels have a less 'basic' look than they do in the screenies above). The objectives for the first 5 levels are as follows:

Level 1: Find the key
Level 2: Find the numbered cubes and put them in the correct order (a chart will be given as a guide, this chart will be the players first idea of the 'cryptic' sense of the game, though this one will be easy)
Level 3: 5 red panels, turn them green in the correct order
Level 4: ??? (another cryptic one, I'll not give away anything yet!)
Level 5: Collect a minimum amount of objects in a multi-level building in which you plummet from floor to floor

All levels shall have a time limit, I think this will be the hardest bit to work out! May need some testers! (But not yet).

ok on to graphics I know you said you where working on the gameplay, but their are a few minor things you could twick. the main one is either your character is to small or your textures are to big. and secondly I think that your textures repeat to often.

I do need to work on that. I need to find a decent scale for the levels and probably tweak the texture repetitiveness. I did that when I was getting really sucky framerates, but then I upgraded my graphics card and the framrate remains steady throughout. Should be able to work on it a bit more this week, as I'm off work, stuck on a problem on level 5 at the mo, but once I've fixed it I'll compile a demo and upload it here.

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about this! The demo is just a few days away, may be sooner! Just a bit of extra work to do and it'll be here ASAP!

I would recommend setting the resolution to 1024 x 768 x 32 as it would look a hell of a lot better

That sounds like a good idea, I haven't considered trying different resolutions yet but I'll give it a try and see if it comes up trumps.

[EDIT] been playing around with the various display modes, the suggested 1024 x 768 x 32 looks and works really well. Thanks for the tip!

Whoa! Those few days turned out to be a few more than I planned! Oh well, life is pretty hectic at the mo, therefore the attached demo is surely full of bugs. If you could report the average sync rate you're getting, that would be great, it should be around 30.

A few levels are pretty dark, and seem huge compared to the character, but that'll be fixed when I get round to it. Please remember that this is a very early demo, just to feel how it plays. Enjoy!
