Let's not turn this into another flame fest...

This is the article

Quote: "Warner announced on Jan. 4 that it would release only high-definition Blu-ray movies starting July, ending its support for the rival HD DVD format."

Combine this with the sales of BD vs HD-DVD and I think we can guess the outcome of this format war.

Quote: "Sony's efforts to shrink the PS3's chips and tweak its design. Already such changes have cut the cost per machine to around $400 now, from above $800 just before it went on sale in November, 2006"

This is probably for the new cheap 40 GB stripped out model (it doesn't really say). High price and lack of games have been the big weak points for PS3.

Quote: "The console's sales have picked up in recent months after Sony cut the price in October, introduced a $399 model in November, and lowered the fees it charges game developers in a bid to broaden its games offering."

That took them some time...

Things seem to be improving, but I have to get on my soap box about the pricing. See $400 is about £200 - if I could go into Gamestation or wherever and buy a PS3 for that then I would, and I imagine a lot of UK'ers feel the same. It seems like tradition for the UK to pay a lot more, wait longer for things.

less is more, but if less is more how you keeping score?

I know what you mean, the same goes for Sweden and our VAT is 6% higher (IIRC).

If you want to play games 360 is still the way to go if you're in a hurry. I'm quite happy with my PS2 and can't afford anything new anyway.

We're in the UK remember $400 = £400 since somewhere along the line someone doesn't want to bother doing the correct conversion so they just switch the currency symbol instead

joking... I hope O.o

If they release one with backwards compatibility then I may have to get myself one of these. Kinda missed out on a chance to get a 60gb version

Isn't $400 the production cost, not the retail price? That works out at around £203. Strangely, I think the US retail price is $399.99 so they are selling them at cost. The UK price of £299.99 works out at about $590!

Indeed we do. Except of course for the 40GB cut down PS3, which we seem to get first . Japan are only just going over to purely supplying the 40GB version but there they only cost 39,800 yen which is around £185.

I hope that sometime in the future they release a PS3 with PS2 hardware again.

If you're wanting to buy a Blu-Ray player, you might as well get the PS3. Apparently the original Blu-Ray players are already going to be outdated and they can't be upgraded to the new Blu-Ray format. The PS3 can be updated. Basically in the future not all Blu-Ray players will play all Blu-Ray movies--- idiotically.

I heard that they will all play the movies fine, but you won't get extra content like downloadable ringtones and wallpapers. Personally I don't give a monkeys about those type of extras, but deffo go with the PS3 as it looks to be fine for just about anything (unless some kind of unthought of hardware that can't be made as a plugin for the PS3 comes out obviously)

Cheers

Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, and Panasonic were knowingly screwing Blu-Ray early adopters:

Really low to blame HD dvds for their failures. -- We were gonna wait to finish it, but hd dvds were coming out, so it's THEIR fault! o.O Linch them not us!

I don't know anyone who bought a blueray player though, it seems kinda pointless when you can get a ps3 for much cheaper. Unless they had recorders I suppose...

Thanks for the article Jeku.

Seems like those who got the 1.0 can still watch 1.1 and 2.0 movies while 1.1 gets the extra BD-J based content on 1.1 discs and 2.0 gets Internet support. Personally I think Internet support and upgrades through the Internet should have been of highest priority before launch, especially today when more and more hardware get this kind of features. Once that's in you can always upgrade the players.

Discs are so last century.

The future is content downloaded to you hard drive over the net.

I don't think I'd replace my HDD recorder just for the hassel of swapping discs out every time I wanted to watch a movie.

Mmmm. How many hard disks does your HDD recorder have? Remember, high definition movies seem to average around 25GB each, with another 7GB of extras. Its seems just over half of Blu-Ray movies are BD50 disks now (50GB) with the rest being BD25 (25GB).

Some PS3 games fills up a 50 GB disc as well. Not only does that take up a lot of expensive space on an HDD but takes forever to download. Even at as high as 1 MB/s (8 Mbit), 50 GB takes almost 14 hours.

I'm still hoping to get a 360 first, but if I'm going to get a HDTV and need a player I'll buy a PS3. Sony seems to have finally succeeded with their own format.

Abercrombie and Fitch actually did that in the London branch.

Dr Schnitzengruber:
You should read the page you link to:

Quote: "However, holographic drives are projected to initially cost around US$15,000, and a single disc around US$120–180, although prices are expected to fall steadily. The market for this format is not initially the common consumer, but enterprises with very large storage needs."

There's currently no need for anything better then a 2 layer 50GB BD, it's fast and large enough for 1080p movies and the current gen of games. It's also 10 times as large as a DVD so for the consumer it's a very good option.

Blu-Ray crushing rival DVD format in Japan

A study of "living-room DVD recorders" in Japan showed an increase of HD sales from 6.1% in Oct to 20% in Nov-Dec. 90% of the HD sales where Blu-Ray, this does not count in PS3 sales. Sony themselves had the top 3 models making up about 60% of the HD market.
