hi,

I'm looking into making my own website but don't have a clue where to start.

Here's a few of my questions:

1) what software could I use to create my own website.?
2) Where should I go to get my website on the internet? (e.g.geocities)
3) How much would it cost?
4) How would I include advertisements in my website?

Thanx.

1) You could use windows notepad if your website is very basic and then make an FTP program with Dark Basic - search google for html tutorials.
I used a pretty low spec package called "Serif Internet Design Suite" - it was in a bargain bin at PC World.
2) I don't know - I use the 50mb given to me by my ISP.
3) Don't know.
4) Don't know but would have thought you gotta have good amount of hits 1st.

1) what software could I use to create my own website.?
Notepad is fine, but unless you are great at HTML, you might want to use Frontpage. Some computers already come with MS Frontpage. You could also use MS Word. If not, you might be able to download a free app on the internet.

2) Where should I go to get my website on the internet?
Geocities is ok, but it has many ads and annoyances. You should do some research and find the best free one, but almost all free ones will have popups, ads, no image linking, low bandwith, etc. If you want to pay, you could get a site with no adds, extra bandwith, and even your own domain name if you want to pay enough.

3) How much would it cost?
It can be free, or any amount of money, depending on features.

4) How would I include advertisements in my website?
You would first need a site with no avertisements already (money). Then you would need alot of hits. Then you would need to find a company that will be willing to pay you money to put ads on your site (good luck).

1) what software could I use to create my own website.?
Don't use Frontpage!!! You're in the UK, there's loads of free software on magazine cover CDs.

2) Where should I go to get my website on the internet? (e.g.geocities)
Can you afford £23.99 + VAt per year? If so, try Supanames.co.uk. I think they do a cheaper version than that. Free webspace is fine, but it can affect your ranking, especially if your domain name is not with the same provider.

3) How much would it cost?
See above

4) How would I include advertisements in my website?
tradedoubler.co.uk is a good start. You'll find your requests rejected some of the time and your payout negligible. However, you'll very quickly find out what interests your visitors, and what companies would be prepared to advertise on your site. Oh, And it won't cost you a penny to do it.

Thanks in advance.

Why shouldn't you use Frontpage?

Front page is VERY VERY innefficient in the code it produces, it bulks up th size of the page and therfore it'll take longer to load.

Personally I would recommend making pages in HTML its very simple to learn, http://www.htmlgoodies.com has a fair few good, easy tutorials. Notepad is FREE and you actually feel you've accomplished something by programming a page.

Make your graphics in http://www.PaintShopPro.com, its cheap and good.

Buy webspace. If you can't, you could create a dialup account with http://www.ukonline.co.uk as they give you unlimited free webspace, no ads, no popups, and FTP access is allowed The only restriction is that when you use FTP to upload or update your website you have to be connected to their net connection, but its only something like 1-2p a minute over the phoneline, and after you cam disconnect and use your other ISP

As for FTP software, well thats a matter of preferance. I personally like CuteFTP, but there are loads of free packages at http://www.download.com and http://www.tucows.com

For adverts, I've always found http://www.cj.com to be excellent, good commission rates and loads of quality companies and ads to choose from. An http://www.Amazon.com affiliation can also do wonders, depending on what type of website you have - EG if you are reviewing a game, after the review have a specific link to buy that game on Amazon, or if you have a page dedicated to a specific celebrity you could have a search box you have edited to search for either books, dvds or cds about that celebrity.

Hope some of this helps, K2/Sam

Yeah, I know, but it is alot easier as it automaticaly changes hyperlinks, images, converts to GIF/JPG/PNG/etc., and does alot more stuff. I know HTML, but it is more work and I am lazy.

lol I imagine if you try and buy a separate full retail version of Frontpage you'll find it costs much more than that - if you got it in an OEM bundle with your PC or Office suite then you are "lucky"

There is only one piece of info you ever need to make a website: green text and dark orange bkg do not work. The only software you ever "need" is a text editor. Even MS Notepad and DOS Edit will do. The rest is nice.

Actually, I like FrontPage, simply because it has the easiest way to get to the HTML (a tab).

If you have a good connection speed and a second computer (probably PII or above with Linux, 2000 or XP), you may want to just try installing Apache and running your own show.

If you want a free host, I'm partial to angelfire, simply because they have decent bandwidth and allow you to keep the ads totally on (no pop-ups) or off the page (allows frames). Geocities is good, and they don't seem to crack down on JavaScripts that kill their ads, either.

I made my site ( www.delvarworld.com ) entirely with notepad. I personally dislike frontpage because it "bloats" your website, as in it uses much more html than humanly needed. Notepad has always done it for me, and I learned html from a book and www.w3schools.com

The only way you can get a domain name (not something like www.geocities.com/hosting/shady.html, but something like www.shady.com) is to pay for it. And you DONT want ads on a website, they annoy the viewers. I personally pay 7$ a month from www.anhosting.com for 500mb webspace and 35gb bandwidth
Another great host is www.utopiahosting.com
www.freewebs.com is the best free host around, ever.

and yeah that's about it

I use HTML Kit mainly, casue the FTP features means i can work off the server, and use the preview option with APACHE on my PC.

I use Edit Plus, Context and NotePad but not too oftern (Edit Pad is great for a fast always there notepad replacement )

About servers, humm, my company owns/partners with a hosting company. Means i get pretty much what i want, just paying the £2.75 a year for a domain (.co.uk) so i get good hosting very cheap. Just gotta get me website up'n'running

Ahem....

1) Dreamweaver is good but review the code because editors kinda muddle everything... useless code sometimes... o_O I use Flash/Php/Html/Xml/Cgi for my websites...

2) You will need a registar for a .com and then a host... I live in the USA so I use DomainDirect.com which is actually Tucows... There you can register any kind of domain (.com/.net/.org/.biz/.de/etc...) for the regular price but there domain parking is pretty good... My host would be hostculture.com which Martyn right there helps run...

FOR YOU:
I noticed you live in the UK so you should get oneandone.co.uk service... its the same price as HostCulture... but you get more space/more banwidth/more fun stuff/ BUT!!!! Hostculture comes with its very own free shopping cart... something which oneandone charges 600$ for... not really worth it ... is it... but 2gigs and 40gigs banwidth is better than 550megs and 20gigs banwidth... plus winserver2003.... and I think you can use oneandone as your registar too...

3) COST... oh yay... I pay about 250$ for 2 year .com registration and parking(40$) and about 209 for HostCulture yearly... but I'm pretty sure it would cost about 300$ with oneandone... better service... =\ you decide...

4) All advertisements are based on how good your website is... and seeing how you don't know how to make one... hold back before you ask companies to advertise for them (you make money) ... its all in the code... links... stuff like that... they usually give you the code... BUT BUT BUT... if you want advertisement... free search engine submissions usually come with your host... =P you might want to search on yahoo for "quick search engine submissions" because there are some websites that you pay lil money too (or no money) to add your website to hundreds of search engines in like 1 step... (or submit them for review)...

heres my website http://www.PuffInteractive.com/
and my forums http://www.PuffInteractive.com/forums/

tell me what you think...

HTML is so simple just don't even bother writting it... use an editor... it saves time... but check the code... ... oh and you upload your webpages to your host... and remember you dont need to type out the directory... =P "http://www.puffinteractive.com/puffy.gif" you can just type
"puffy.gif"...

FrontPage is nice and quick, if not the friendliest thing in the world (it looks that way, like other Office things, but it gets weird when you try to change advanced settings). I don't know which is easier, straight HTML or FrontPage

I play only $9.99 per year for my domain name, and I found free hosting with no ads.

My hosting gives me 50~ meg, and I can request more. PHP/Mysql/SSI/CGI but that won't concern you right now.

http://www.hey.nu is the host.
http://www.gkg.net is the domain provider.

Very nice peopel @ hey.nu. I recommend you check it out!

Oh yeah @bout Front Page... I don't like FrontPage at all because it first of all limtis what you can do in HTML, and its a Drag and Drop tool. No true programmer would ever dare use one of those, unless he had brain damage / 5 minutes to live....heh...

Hmmm, neat links Morph, but the sites take about 6 seconds to access (On DSL ). Is that the host or the domain name provider being slow?

90% of PHP is HTML, ok thats wrong, but PHP is used to dynamically create a website.

I have a question. I have a domain name (4medics.org.uk) from lowcostnames.co.uk. My ISP (Pipex) hosts my site (50megs, no ads). However, when you look at the site...the address always remains 4medics.org.uk it doesn't change depending on what page you are viewing. Someone said it's because lowcostnames use web forwarding? What does this mean? Its really annoying coz I couldn't link people to specific pages on my site...they always had to navigate to the page from the index page.

P.S. There is only one page on my web at the minute as I currently working on it offline.

See if your host and domain provider support DNS settings

Your domain provider should do, yourhost may not, if they both do post here and i will tell ya what to do to allow direct access to files through your domain.

This is taken from my domain name provider's FAQ:

What is Web Forwarding?

You may already have a website if so Web forwarding allows us to 'forward' your domain name to a particular site hosted elsewhere on the Internet - e.g. on freespace allocated by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Example:

http://www.yourdomainname.com

forwards to: http://freespace.virgin.net/your_user_name/index.html

All web forwarding is masked in a frameset, so only the domain you registered appears in the address bar and not the address you are forwarding to, therefore not allowing the user to know they have been forwarded.

I presume this answers my own question!

The domain name I have with them was pretty cheap and I want a different one. Where is the best place to get a .co.uk domain name with ~100Mb webspace and a decent amount of bandwidth (not that I really understand what that means)! I would like to keep it below £50 if possible

I think there is no reason why you can't use frontpage for personal webpages. For professional ones for other people and such like, yeah, you have to write them yourself. But just for webpages about hobbies, simple HTML ones, you should use frontpage, it saves so much time and you can edit the code afterwards, or in frontpage.
