i have started designing and perfecting my own cpus but i don't know where i can get 7400 series ics. our town's radio shack only has op-amps.

that's awesome! i've always wanted to do something like this, but i dont have the knowledge in circuitry to do it

the website has plenty to start teaching you how to build one, though i found it easier to learn how each component works and does it's thing instead of learning how to design a data path first. Also, it is best to add i/o commands to your cpu if you want a display other that showing what is in the registers. I also started with cpus that didn't load the program from memory. It is a whole lot easier if you get comfortable with logic components and gates first. But WHATEVER YOU DO NEVER START DESIGNING A CPU WITH JUST GATES!!! ALWAYS SKETCH OUT THE COMPONENTS AND ONLY THINK ABOUT THE GATES WHEN YOU ARE BUILDING IT!!!!
