Hello, I have just started a website and have tried many different ways to try to get the word out about it and nothing is working, what is the best way to advertise a website.

I'd say this thread was a great approach. Very innocent looking. I should indeed try one of these myself.

Well the reason I didn't jump on him yet is that he didn't actually link, so I think he genuinely wants to know how .

But of course, people will ask, won't they?

It was a joke, but nonetheless could be true.

Ye, we'll need to know what it's about.

And don't bother trying to advertise it until you have something worthwhile on it.

Like said previously, you don't have any content. No one would visit a site without content, so don't bother to try and advertise if we don't even really have anything to do on the website.

You really do need some more content before trying to advertise it. Otherwise people will visit and decide its not worth coming back to.
I have recently been working on a new 'hobby' site for myself. I wrote an online blogging system for a company which turned out not to be needed in the end. Rather than let it go to waste I thought I would start my own PS3 related Website as its something I am interested in. You can see it here:
http://ps3.worldbydesign.com
I have only just started to try and get it listed in search engines and links elsewhere because I feel it contains enough information to interest visitors. The design isn't very good at the moment, but as long as there is content I can work on that later. (The large text is so it looks good in the high resolution PS3 Web browser). I intend to add lots more to it, including some online Flash Web games playable on the PS3. I have quite a collection now I have written for other sites (mostly educational though) which I can expand on for proper gamers
Most people who work in the Web design and marketing world won't share all of their secrets with you, but here are a few things I have done which might help you get started:

-- Add META tags to your pages. Do a search if you are unsure what they are. Your site has none.

-- I have submitted my site to Google and created an automatically generated Site Map (in PHP). This will help Google keep track of which pages change and when to revisit. I am about to submit it to other search sites too but Google is a priority. The most important thing here is 'be patient'. It can take Google and other search engines weeks to spider your site. Just wait and use the tools they provide to help monitor your site.

-- Keep updating the site. Adding new content will be a flag for search engines to re-spider your site and its also good for return visits. If someone visits your site after a month and nothing has changed, they probably won't come back.

-- I also look for other blogs and sites with the same subject where I can post advice and my own replies to their comments. Obviously I put a link to my site address in the footer, which most allow and encourage. When a search engine spiders their site, it will follow the link to mine. Make sure your comments are relevant though and helpful, otherwise it can have a VERY negative effect. Don't just post replies for the sake of it.

If you go to my (WIP) search engines ADD page it will show you how your page looks to a web crawler.

http://www.kumkie.com/addurl.html

It only picked up two words

nitro

gameshome

Use you page titles to describe your pages and to get higer up use a domain name / html page that describes you page too.

e.g. www.nitro-games.net/home.html

would push you up the ranking for those words.

You got poition 2/2 for 'nitro' in my search engine because the other page has nitro in it's url.

2. Nitro Games-Home
Nitro Games-Home
Accuracy: 100.0%, Size: 4.7kb, Listed: 23-0-2008, Language: English, Location: Global

I'd change Games-Home in your title to 'Games - Home' so it picks up as two seperate words.

Do buy google ads it will get your website noticed fast but costs
Most search engine don't do free entry noew or it takes 6months + but you can pay to enter MSN and yahoo.

Dont us frames or iframes.

Do get other web pages to link back to your, but don't spam forums.

Do not use a free host if it has been blacklisted.

Hey, I am currently doing a revision of the site, here are some ideas of what I am going to add, please tell me what you think
simplifying the navigation(alot)
Daily and weekly polls(embedded in the side bar)
Forums
Online games(flash)
embedding other parts of popular website
google gadgets: http://www.google.com/ig/directory?synd=open
and first and foremost improving the content of the games pages I already have on the site.
Any other ideas? I think have a good start.
