Hey all, I'm doing a survey for some research, if you have a few minutes, could you fill it out?

The results will stay anonymous, and I won't be able to track any answers to specific members

Thanks!

What if I never broke a computer I couldn't repair myself?

Some of the questions were impossible to answer, so I just filled in 0 there.

No problem

Wow, thanks all, you guys have been an immense help.

I won't post the fine details, but I'll share the conclusions. A little backstory, right now I'm in the process of fleshing out a custom computer and repair shop in my local town, and after talking to a computer nerd friend he told me he doesn't build his own computers (and he's an electronic engineer, figured it'd be just what he would do), he told me he buys them pre-made for the warranty and to skip the hassle. I quizzed him on his ideas of a good warranty and was surprised at his answers.

I personally don't believe in extended warranties, realizing that companies always overcharge, so they make money even though some of it goes back into fixing the equipment.

That's why I figured a survey was in order.

Well, I was planning on making the warranty completely optional, but by the looks of things, not only does the majority (of 40 participants!) expect a warranty, but people won't buy it unless it's included free.

From the results, it's also very clear that nobody trusts a place that doesn't have an in house warranty on the computers.

You guys saved me a lot of trouble, because now it's obvious I must include the cost of a year warranty (1 and 2 year warranties were tied) in the cost of the machine, but I have to offer an extended warranty on top of that. Some people voted as much as 5 years.

The majority also wouldn't pay more than 100 dollars for a two year warranty.

From the survey, many estimated that their warranties used in the past would have cost 100 dollars to repair equipment, so that seems alright, except for the minority of people who estimated their cost at 1000!

There were a lot of people who said their warranties covered damages in excess of 100 dollars (about 1/5 said over 100, 1/5 below, 1/5 at 100 and the rest no answer. So the average cost of expenses on a given warranty were around 130 dollars for all participants, this figure of course is fairly subject to bias, since it's a small group of answers and an arbitrary value from multiple countries.

Anyways, I thought I'd share the results to give a little back as a thank you

Oh, and lastly, one other thing that through me way off, most people wanted faster processors over faster graphics. I wouldn't have thought :o)

I voted faster processor because i don't usually play games on the computer. I work with music, 3d rendering and video editing.
