Core Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

AMD have released the Phenom Quad core processor for the home market!

Just saw a 2.2Ghz Quad at £130.

Why buy one over a Intel Q6600. Well AMD says their processor is true Quad meaning each core is independent and will have individual high speed access to memory unlike the Intel which is 2x Core 2 dies with a FSB bottleneck in the form of a shared memory controller. Rummors have it you will be able to build a system with 4x8800GTs in it!

To really spice things up AMD have also annouced a Triple core (I assume a Quad with one bad core) that will be used to seriously undercut the Q6600 market.

Intel have responded by delaying their new 45nm shrunk quad Q9000 range. It's reported to be cooler and more overclockable starting at 2.5ghz and upwards.

I expect Intel are hitting the accounting books now to see if they can offer it at a lower price because it was supposed to slot in above the Q6600 price at £160+

With the graphics card war also hotting up it looks like 2008 is going to be a very interesting year!

It realy helps at bootup even if you don't have threaded software.

All those little annoying programs on your task bar can load 4x faster.

Also if your virus scanner kicks in it don't slow down your gaming.

I can be hosting a game server, watching a DVD/TV and not notice any slowdown in other single thread programs im running.

Three benefits I noticed with single threaded software

Some of my games are multicore aware. Supreme Commander, Lost Planet, Quake 4. I'm sure there will be more on the way.
