Mention was made in another thread about writing a program you could talk to and I said I'd written a similar program a long time ago.

I've long since lost the source, but I've found the exe - which I've attached to this post in a zip.

It's exe only but as it's too old (and bad) for a Program Announcements post and it is a DBC program, I'm posting it here.

It plays up on my machine - you can't type very fast or it misses characters. This is odd because it uses DBC's Input command - not one I've written myself.

If if was made in DBC 1.13 or earlier, then it always misses keys.
The new DB 1.2 now has a better input command that inputs faster typing.

I think you did... did I miss it?

Seriously, how do you make the little blue text come up below your message?

That sounds interesting I would really like to play that, did you just chuck responses for words in it or is it more complicated than that?

Sorry - don't know what happened there. I definitely added the attachment.

In fact when I went to do it again, the fileselector went straight to the folder that the zip was in - and it only ever remembers the last used folder if a file was actually selected.

Go figure.

Anyway, zip now attached to the opening post for the second time!

You should change his name to SAM - Stupid Algorithm Manipulator! It's a much better name .
Just kidding! Although I'm sorry to say it's not very good and could make some improvements. I like the 'Idiot At Keyboard' joke, though. The only question I was able to ask him was, 'What is your name?', and surprisingly enough, it worked! He said, "My name is PAM - Weren't you paying attention?" And I was also able to change the color of the objects, but when I said, "Make the cube yellow and the sphere green," it only made the cube green . And, simple questions like "Who are you?" didn't even work!

Well it's not as sophisticated as I was expecting
but I didn't give it much of a trial so maybe it is doing more than I thought, I didn't try anything like changing the objects.

Just type in something like "Make the cube green" and it'll turn it green. It works with all the other objects, and most color names. He also says funny things if you curse at him.

Without the source code, I can't remember what I put in it I'm afraid. I know you can ask it to play games.

But it suffers from what we were talking about in the other thread - the fact that writing such a program is very boring and tedious to write if you want to make it respond halfway decently to comments.

From what I remember, it recognises certain phrases and questions, but tries to respond to what you type. However it's obviously limited by the fact that it doesn't know what for example a cat or dog is - or what the differences between them are.

As such, you have to fall back on stock phrases far too often.

As I said before, writing such a program is easy, however including all the required data to make the program not seem stupid is monumental and far too big a task...

hmmm Ive been attempting to make something like this lately, I havnt gotten very far in it but I think I have a good idea. Basically when the person says something I try to identify the words, If you are insulting then the number in the insulting variable gets added on, if this variable is high then the response that the computer gives back changes. Also if you say something nice then the nice variable goes up and the angry, or mean variable goes down. The problem im having is that I cant figure out how to register more than one word, since im currently making a text adventure it would be nice to figure it out, even though you dont really need more than 2 words to make it through a text adventure
