I've been saving up for a while for a 9700 Pro video card, but recently some things have led me to think that I might be better off getting a new, but lower-end video card. One of the reasons is that my computer already has mild power issues, and I think a really high-end card would kill it. Another is that there are so many varied birthdays and celebrations in my family, my savings aren't really getting anywhere and I'm stuck around the $200 mark for my video card budget.

Do you think it'd be smart to do this? And, which would be a better buy for my buck-- a Radeon or a GF? I can understand the FPS ratings in reviews, but I cannot dechpyer their power needs, which is my main concern .

Thanks all.

What card do you have at the moment and what is you PC spec?

Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes, They got them hoppy legs & twitchy little noses,
And what's with all the carrots? What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?

I've just upgraded my machine from an MX400 to an FX5200 with 128MB - nice and cheap (£76), and loads better.

Wow, you got that for £76? Pricewatch has it for $64... must have been a while ago.

*can't resist peeking at the 5600*

Edit- This one looks tempting: http://store.yahoo.com/hoct12/syra75ddr64a.html

How much are you spending for the new card?

And you're probably going to have to get more memory for the card as well. My new powerhouse machine which I just ordered today has a radeon 9800 (not pro) of the card, and the whole rig cost only 1500 dollars. It's really in the price...

I'm not spending a cent over $210 .

Why more memory? I'm aware of the limitations of having 384mb, but they wouldn't actually damage the quality of my new card, would they?

If the deal leaves enough to buy a new 256er, I'll get one though

Edit-- Finally found a helpful page with a card that's supposed to be perfect for an AMD Athalon & KT 133. Nevermind

Okie, I did it... not that card though... got a Radeon 9500 Pro instead. Reviews were extremely positive and it held up well in comparisin to the FX series, so... if there's any problems, I got it from a site with a very solid return policy . I don't expect any problems. Got Second Day Air, too...
