I remember that a year ago there was a post concerning a student having used Dark Basic as a thesis. I believe the topic revolved around proving that DarkBasic could be used for RTS games. Does anybody remember which forum that was, or perhaps give a link to the subject? As a Graduate student looking for a thesis idea, I would like to see what he did. Thanks for your time.

I think you will find that Fallout made a thesis; can't be sure though.

Yes, it's Fallout's game called Operation Desert Fallout in WIP. More info on Fallout in this months' Untitled (issue 4).

Are you sure you're not confusing thesis with feces?

Hmmm...this project doesn't seem to ring a bell. I believe there was also a picture showing a brown hardback cover book on the page. Talk about trying to find a needle in a haystack.

I also did War MMO as my MSc Thesis. An experiment to build a MMO that was impossible to cheat by using online banking level security.

In 3 months, I had write an encryption module for DBP and setup a full working prototype server, supporting 100 players, so people could log in and try to hack it, along with all my own hacking tests and the reports.

However, I got screwed out of a distinction by my University. I had a 76% grade average and the idiots who marked my project didn't have a clue even though they call themselfs game lecturers. "You cant build an online game using TCP" and "your online game can't support physics" was just some of the many stupid comments they came out with.

They graded it 60% and when I complained the university just ignored all my communications. I'm left with a 70% overall average graded as a Pass instead of distinction because they will only award a distinction if the project also scores 70%+.

Ouch, that has got to be the dumbest comment they could possibly come out with. You should of bought them Half-life 2 death match as a Christmas present or something, that'd shut them up

Therein lies the problem in education. 99% of teachers of any subject do not know the subject, they're just ticking boxes. You could come up with a superior method for doing something, but if it doesn't tick all the "method" boxes, you're stuffed.

Yeah, my mother said, she talked with one of professors and he said one of his worse (if not the worst one) students is working as a... teacher, because she wasn't good enough to find a better job...

That's daft, I'm glad my lecturers know what they're talking about (I'd be a bit worried if they didn't, considering their books are in the reading list) in fact they're very passionate about their job.

'Ticky boxy' lecturers or teachers aren't very useful, because innovation or quality goes over their head, good ones will ask about your project and tell you if the requirements don't 'dig' your work. Though, from what I understand, lecturers do the marking anyway, one that know what they're talking about will be impressed by innovation and probably would mark accordingly - looking out our 'degree mark deadline' to get a first/distinction, your work has to be anything between 'very good to excellent' to 'outstanding, exceptionally high standard'. It says nothing about following a particular route. Makes sense for creative courses, programming is creative in the sense you're 'creating' something, thus it should really be subjective to the lecturer.

On an interesting note, someone I know who has dyslexia typed his science coursework on his MacBook, stapled it to the back of his paper and got no marks. If he'd written it, he would have still got absolutely zero because no one would be able to read it. His science was perfect; had they marked it, it would have been an A, if not an A*. But these markers are silly and downright pathetic sometimes. I wouldn't be surprised if disgruntled students turn education upside down in the next ten years if something isn't done.
