Hi,

Yesterday my 360 decided to give up the ghost and show me the red ring of death.

it started by the console freezing when idle, how odd? you'll assume it will die when playing games. as of today it died while playing xbox live games.

Sent microsoft support a repair ticket.

Anyone else had a rrod issue?

p.s. this thread is not yet another console flame war, i'm happy with my 360 thank you very much.

Ugh, bummer lagmaster! I have been thinking about getting a 360 as of late. All the co-op games on live would be so fun with my friends. I just hope mind doesn't RROD

rumour has it, it's the older batches (the older non hdmi ones) have this non recoverable problem.

i'm not a very heavy gamer, lucky to play 2-3 hours a week.

Welcome to the world of next gen, mate, an infinite dimension of disappointment, broken hinges, red rings, damaged discs, overheating, read errors and pretty much anything else you can imagine.

My box just got the RROD 2 days ago. I swear they have a button at microsoft that they press to trigger this on random machines across the world so they can shell in money for repairs.

From what I've read it occurs when the motherboard overheats, then bends and snaps a connection somewhere. You'd think they'd use wires that could take the bending.

If you do send it in, make sure you only send in the xbox, not the hard drive or any other gadgets, because I've heard of tonnes of stories where people send it in with their HD or whatever and get it back without, Microsoft just tells them it was lost in shipping on the way to Microsoft or something like that.

I've also read that once you get the RROD repaired, its destined to break again after a few weeks.

Final piece of info; theres an urban legend that you can temporarily fix the RROD for around 4 days by wrapping your xbox in a bunch of towels, turning it on causing it to heat up a lot, leaving it to "bake" for 20 minutes, unwrapping it, turning it off, waiting a few seconds, then turning it back on, and it will work. I haven't tried it yet, I really doubt it'll work, but then again there are videos on youtube showing it working, but of course that could just be some smooth camera tricks.

My Xbox should be back from repair by next wednesday, but what happended for me is, that I couldnt see anything, then one day it just wouldnt work at all. You could tell something wasn't working right because it was really quiet, like as quiet as this. I never got the RROD at all. They repaired mine for free.

Or, like someone said: modify it and add a fan under the motherboard...

And void your warranty should it happen anyhow

Well, some of the ?modificators? give their own warranty. If your X360 won't work after it, they repair it or buy you a new one if it broke completely (they did it with PS2 modchips )

What does it cost to get such a mod... I dunno... Might as well just take advantage of Microsoft if your 360 breaks after you go through all the hassle for something that might not even happen

I tried that... worked for 2 minutes... FAIL.

I've seen where people turn off their 360 and hit it on the lower right side when it is standing up and then turn it on and it works.
You don't even have to hit it that hard.

Seeing as how the customer doesn't need to pay for repairs on RROD, I highly doubt that.

My FOURTH 360 has been working fine for a week so far.

Blimey, red rings of death are more common than I thought (and that earlier 360 fanboys defensively argued against )

The question is, are MS finding the source of the problem and fixing it? I might eventually try getting one...though I might not need to, as it looks like I might be moving into a house with a friend who's got one next year, but hey it'd be nice to know if there will be a more stable 360 release.

No, even if it was already found out by other people...

Well the Xbox 360s have improved air flow and a smaller GPU. This might be to fix the problem. I just bought a 360 the other day and all I can say is it's a bit loud compared to the Wii and even my gaming PC. Even though my PC has 6 fans in it.

I was actually leaning towards XBox but this is one of the reasons I chose to get a PS3 instead, everything just seems a bit sturdier, and I'm happy to pay extra for that
and also it's damn quiet!

@Lagmaster
you have a zombie 360!

I just finished doing the towel trick. Wrapped it in 3 towels, turned it on, left it for exactly 20 minutes, unwrapped it / turned it off, let it cool down for 3 - 4 mins, and turned it back on. And guess what? It works.

I dunno how long it will last, people on the net say for around 4 days, we'll see. But everythings fine right now. When I unwrapped it, the RROD wasnt flashing, it was a single bright red ring glowing, probably signalling it was over heating.

But what's the point in doing that? YOu should get it repaired as it's still under warranty.

My 360 actually showed a RROD at one point, a real one, but an hour later it booted as it should... Never had a problem with it after that and after a half year (and after Halo 3), we sold it.
