I'm not talking sailer moon junkies, i mean real anime. Like Akira or Vampire Hunter D. I've been wanting to check out some other anime lately, but not sure which to get. There's so many I haven't heard of that look good, but I've been fooled before by descriptions of what looked like a real good show when it was garbage.
Lately, I've been eyeballing Basilisk and Gantz. But with the price of anime, I don't want to waste my money. Anyone seen these?

(if anyone says DBZ is bestest ever, be ready for the large trout coming your way)

I thoroughly enjoy Bleach and sadly, I'm also a pretty big naruto fan, lol. Not sure if those are what you conisider hardcore anime, but I love them none the less.

never really got into bleach, can't remember if i've seen naruto or not. I liked cowboy bebop, hellsing, and full metal alchemist to a point.

Just found this website: http://animethat.com that lets you watch episodes of different animes. So i'm gonna watch an episode of basilisk and see how it is.

My favs are Samurai Champloo and Love Hina. I'm bordering on the edge between "softcore American anime watcher" (people who only hear of anime once it is translated and popular in North America) and "actual anime watcher" who watches the original sh*t in Japanese.

Phaelax, from that site I would recommend to take a look at:

- Trigun
- Death Note
- Claymore
- Black Lagoon
- Trinity Blood

Theory is when you know something, but it doesn't work. Practice is when something works, but you don't know why.
Programmers combine theory and practice: Nothing works and they don't know why.

Here are some of my favourites, in no particular order:
Berserk
The Vision of Escaflowne
Hajime no Ippo
Gundam Wing
Gundam Seed
Great Teacher Onisuka
Fullmetal Alchemist
Naruto
One Piece
Guyver (the original series)
Tsubasa Chronicle
Tale of the Moon Princess
Detective Academy Q
Samurai Champloo
7 Samurai
Legend of Galactic Heroes
Hikaru no Go
Death Note
Gurren Laggan
Honey and Clover
Trigun
Get Backers
Love Hina
DNA2
Cowboy Bebop
Air Master
Full Metal Panic

I can't remember every title nor every anime I've seen, but those are all good ones if you ask me. The style and genre differs a lot so I bet not everyone will like all of these. The one I've seen most times is Hajime no Ippo (known by some other name in English). It's about boxing and what really makes it great it the humor and the details of the matches. Gundam Seed is very good. The Vision of Escaflowne is the best fantasy anime I know. Air Master is a really cool fighting anime, and not long or drawn out.

Oh man! Death Note is amazing and it's pretty sure compared to Bleach and Naruto (under 60 episodes I think? correct me if I'm wrong). It seriously is amazing. It's different in that there isn't much fighting action going on, it's more of two geniuses trying to out match each other mentally.

Quote: "Plot Summary: Shinigami own notebooks called “Death Notes” which are used as killing devices. Whoever’s name they write down in a death note will die within 40 seconds. Shinigami Ryuk dropped his Death Note in the human world where it’s found by honor high school student Light. With the death note actually having directions in it for its use, Light discovers he now has the power to discreetly kill people, and with this new power he plans to change the world in his ideal world by killing off criminals. Eventually the governments of the countries around the world notice the unusual amounts of deaths of their criminals, and figure out someone is behind them, but they have no way of discovering it themselves. That’s when they hire L, a master detective, to find out who is behind the murders. "

I highly recommend it, it's written and shown very well.

Gundam Wing was really good as well. I dunno though, it almost didn't feel like an anime to me though. It definitely wasn't a cartoon, but it was different. Maybe thats because it was very american in a sense... in a sense that there wasn't much going on with traditional japanese themes (no shinigami, no elements, no ninja). Just kick @ss machines.

I've heard Love Hina is good. Trigun is weird IMO. I say that only because I have a friend who dresses and acts like one of the characters 24/7... and it's really annoying.

Cyber City Oedo 808 is pretty cool. It's got Elvis, David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King and Bebop from TMNT as outlaws hunting outlaws. They swear a lot and have explosive collars like out of The Running Man. It's actually pretty awesome.

Bubblegum Crisis is cool too.

Given i like these, what else would i like? I see a lot of the 80s/90s anime is blatantly based off 80s films like Blade Runner, Robocop etc, which is nice. I can't find any blatant homages to Aliens or Predator though, which seems an awful shame. Have i overlooked something?

For almost any anime, I recommend the Manga over it. The big problem with MOST anime is the filler, how episodes are made longer and ones are completely made up. The three best examples of this I know are Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach, which are all FAR better mangas. And don't anyone DARE watch the English version of One Piece. Any interesting or funny parts are destroyed by what might be the worst dubbing ever.

And think Full Metal Alchemist was good? I was. Really good. But the manga completely blows the anime version out of the water. That's true for most, but sometimes you get an anime that you can tell is meant to be seen in motion.

My favorite anime is FLCL, but Cowboy Bebop and some others are way up there. FLCL has a really cool Manga, but it tells a different version of the story and in a very different style. I like the anime more. Eureka Seven has some absolutely incredible moments, but I wasn't impressed by most of it. The Manga so far is doing a better job of telling a better version of the story, but it misses out on the really great action sequences. Ghost in the shell was interesting, but after seeing the first two movies, I think I have to watch the show, because I feel like I'm just not getting anything out of it.

Berserk and Gantzs are the most violent mangas I'm following, and they're pretty good. It's a nice contrast to the younger manga I read. O haven't seen the anime versions, so I'm not sure how they go. I think Gantz is a whole lot more disturbing and interesting though, especially for programmers like many of us here.

Another reason to go with manga is time. Specifically, unless a manga is as text heavy as Death Note, you'll get the story faster, because it isn't forced to drag a certain amount though 24 minutes or so. I read all of Berserk up to the most recent in 3 days, while still going to classes and doing my work. That's a good 300 chapters, meaning over 6000 pages.

As for American anime? Avatar is pretty good, and the animation is far better than most Japanese anime.

If you like anime-styled games, No More Heroes is amazing. That's a game for real gamers, the kind who like games that they really have to work to beat. It's the first game I've ever played where halfway through I was almost twice as good at every other game I played just for playing that one. And it's got style up the wazoo. It could easily have been an anime, if the gaps in the city part were made into a linear story.

Edit: I'm going to be getting Killer 7, because it's also made by Suda 51 and looks to be worth while.

More great anime:

Beck (about a Japanese band)
Hunter x Hunter (not as drawn out as Naruto)
Macross 7 (great music)
Macross Zero (only 4 episodes)
Genshiken (about Japanese geeks, otakus)
Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X in US)

Irresponsible Captain Tylor and Outlaw Star are both good. Personally I got bored of Inuyasha, kinda like Ranma ½.

Whishle (football) and Dear Boys (basketball) are ok. Slam Dunk (basketball) is pretty good at first but the end is so drawn out. I remember 1 episode represented 2 minutes of the match... Touch is sort of a baseball/drama thing.

The last good anime I saw was Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan. Action, comedy, mechas and a sexy girl in barely no clothes with a big rifle as one of the main characters

Best way to recomend an anime is to know what you like: Drama, comedy, action, fighting, mechas etc.

Yes, Gantz is really good. I enjoyed it. Never seen the other one so can't say much for that. You should also check out Death Note. And if you like Gantz you would probably enjoy elfen lied Which is also one of my favs.

I also really enjoyed Lain, but its one of those that at lot of people get confused by.

And for the love of Bob, Naruto = nooooooo. We have a name for people who love that anime way to much and thats Narutards

Naruto is really good in the beginning, pretty much all episodes up to the 1 year + filler spree.

Outlaw Star gets a 4/5 from me, it's not great.
