Well my motherboard died on me out of nowhere, I'm guessing it was one of the big connectors because it was wobbling a bit when we opened my computer up

So I ordered a new FoxCon WinFast NF4K8AB motherboard w/ chipset nVidia nforce 4 ($30) and GeForce 6200 128mb ($0??, upgrade from 6100 ), and not to mention my new 256mb stick of memory ($15, added on to my current 512mb). Beautiful stuff right there.

Everything works real fast and great. I can run at 1280x1024 now. 3DS Max loads 3 times quicker. An FPS Engine I'm working on in DBPro jumped 30 Frames Per Second. I can run Half Life 2 at all highest settings, and it's barely any lag!

Not to mention, I've learned a great deal about computers now. Before, I could only point out the haddrives and power supply. Now I actually know my stuff.

Well, I LOVE newegg now. Unbelievably, I ordered on Sunday night, and it came on Tuesday afternoon with UPS ground. Now In two days I had my computer set up again.

You run Half Life II on full settings on the same graphics card as me? I'd love to know what your framerate is.

Framerate for what, HL2? I think I have the setting to not show the FPS, but I'll check it out later today.

Thank you Rami. So many kind, encouraging people on these forums

And you run XP on that thing? I didn't even know they made sticks as low as 256mb anymore.

And something about a $30 motherboard frightens me.

I could run HL2 at full settings on a 5600FX at a pretty decent FPS prior to getting my current GPU

After just finishing building my new pc, I installed HL2 on it and am playing it through whole game again (this will be my 3rd time).

Looks so much nice with a 22" screen and a 8800GT card with a Quad Core Q6600 and 4GB RAM (even though windows is a bit anal and sees only 3.25 of it - silly 32bit limit stuff). Runs really well at 1680 * 1050 !

Boo!

@Phealex,
Hey, my memory isn't as bad as you put it out to be. It's a quarter short of 1 gig. You might be forgetting the additional 512 I have.

@David R, spooky,
Half Life has to be one of the best video game series, you must agree?

Hahaha. Seriously, you have not seen a great computer until you've seen my dads friend's. He's an airplane engineer or something along those lines. Filthy rich. He's got a processor more than 6 GHZ to support the engineer modeling programs he uses. Just imagine how crazy good his other parts are

Wait, you just got 2GB of ram for $60. I just spent $100 dollars on 2GB.

I think it depends on the type of RAM you have. For example, DDR-400, though slower and more power consuming than DDR2-800, costs much, much more than DDR2-800. For example, here are the two cheapest sets I can find at Newegg of each type:

Cheapest 2GB (1GB x 2) DDR-400 at Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231039 - $89.99

Cheapest 2GB (1GB x2) DDR2-800 at Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211165 - $38.99

Though DDR2-800 RAM can get more expensive than that, even most of the higher quality stuff will not reach the price of the cheapest DDR-400.

ddr2-667 is very affordable right now. If you're running at 1333mhz that's the way to go to save on money. Of course, it won't beat out the same ram clocked at full 1333, it's also a third the price.

the general idea is to get ram clocked at half your fsb speed if you're low on funds, unless it's just barely more expensive to get it at a 1:1 speed. When you buy ram at a fractional speed like 1:1.5 (for example, an 800fsb processor with 667fsb ram), the speed difference is negligible. But you can also get the higher clocked ram for future proofing.

Yes, why is that? I always thought that was weird.
