The dot thing you are talking about is a vertex. for a first model i would try to make something a lot simpler. like a book shelf or even just a box and texture it.

Hopes this Helps

Make sure your in wireframe mode even when you have an image 'set to backround'.

When you're done modeling you'll need to learn how to texture.

Download UV Mapper Classic- it's free.
http://uvmapper.com/downloads.html

And then you can follow my tutorial on how to texture using Milkshape and UV Mapper.

http://www.zaibatsugames.com/downloads.html

Please let me know what you think of the tutorial, and if there is something I could do to make it better.

To get 'wireframe' mode (as well as 'flat shaded, smoothed and textured), all you have to do is to 'right click' with your mouse in the viewport you are working in and select it from the list which appears. You need this on when you are adding vertex to an image which is 'set to backround' in order to see the vertex.
Plus make sure you have selected the right 'Vertex' tab for you to use and include vertex.

I have taken a couple of screenshots for you and made an image for you to look at which explains the above.
I do recomend that you first read through as many tutorials as possible in order to get the feel for the program.

I hope you find this useful and good luck.

In model on the right side press vertex. Place vertex were you want them. Then select faces, know press on one vertex, then press the next vertex and then the last one. In each face there is 3 vertex.

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling Milkshape to see if that is the problem.
I have the same version as you (v-1.82 is the latest one) and I have had no problems at all with it.
If you have the trial version then maybe the time limit is up and those functions have been turned off?

you can still do stuff in the trial, just not save or export.

I have the same version"1.8.2" and also use Vista and it works fine. As a matter of fact I'm getting ready to post my new model pack which was all modeled using Milkshape.

No there is no free version, I have been using milkshape since it's first release.
