Hey guys, I've recently wanted to test out Linux, just to see what all the fuss is about. I don't feel like installing a new operating system on my comp, and someone in the Windows-Linux thread suggested running in a virtual machine, I don't care if it's slower, I just want to test it out.

Ive been sniffing around the Ubuntu page here
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

And the virtual box page
http://www.virtualbox.org/

What version of Ubuntu do you reccommend?
Also, how do you go about installing it on Virtual Box?

Alright, thanks.

I'd recommend downloading a Ubuntu LiveCD, that's what I did. Allows you to run the OS from a CD.

Not sure if I can boot from a CD, will check later. Though I would rather run in a virtual machine, what would be easier?

I can only see the Live cd installer, can't find Live cd.

I did this before so I know. Download the ISO image if you haven't already. Then create a new machine(at least 128mb of RAM and 8gb of harddrive) and name it ubuntu. Set the machine type to linux 2.6 and then mount the ISO as a removable disc. Then boot your machine and it should start. Let the machine go to the desktop where you can install the OS then turn off your machine(shut down, not save) and dismount the cd.

Not sure, never used a virtual machine. With a LiveCD you can just pop it in the CD drive and boot up, it's really easy. I think all of the downloads there (apart from the alternate desktop one) include a LiveCD.

Quote: "I can only see the Live cd installer"

That's what you want. I think it's called that because you can boot up from the CD and then install it while running it.

Ok, I'm going to try booting from a cd first, but I don't want to install Linux, I don't want to harm my system. DLing now--700 mb!

You download the LiveCD which boots the OS from the CD, and if it is started you can select 'Install Ubuntu' from the desktop that you have. You have most options available with the LiveCD, just note it takes a bit longer to boot than if you'd have it installed.

you can also boot your vm using the ISO, and install it from there.

But seriously, if you have 10 or more gigs to spare, try it out. During the installation it will allow you to resize a drive partition to fit the installation, and will install a boot loader so you can load either windows or linux.

If I like it, I will probably install, I've overlooked Linux for a while, wonder if I will like it or not. I was thinking maybe booting from puppy Linux, but I decided not to.

Use a program that can burn ISO files. It's a disc image format.

Not if you are using Virtual Box. Then you only have to mount the ISO as an CD (it is easy). If you need any help, I could guide you over msn. Have done it many times, so I know how Virtual Box works.

Get Daemon Tools Light, it runs ISO images just fine.

Howso? Isn't that what he's trying to accomplish, mount the Image without a CD, or boot from the Virtual Device?

I see what you mean. But Z's correct, the VM has it built in to read and mount ISO's to the virtual machine.

Nevermind. It gets past loading, then gives me a orange screen and stays that way, doesn't continue. I've started in run or install mode and safe graphics mode.

Sounds like it's loading your background color, but doesn't load the desktop or background. Sounds like you don't have enough ram loaded for it. You need at least 256mb, and I would highly recommend having 512 set aside for it.

Also, it can take quite some time if you've got an older machine, give it ten minutes and see what happens.

(This of course won't be the case once you install it. but it takes insane amounts of resources to boot the cd)

Alright, I've given it 512 and it's loaded up, I'm typing from it now. It seems pretty cool so far..

Edit: How do you change to 32 bit mode? Virtual box keeps bugging me about it.
Also how do you make it fill the screen? Currently there is a large black border around it, I;m in full screen.

It happens when you use a Live CD, wait about 5 mins for it to load.

No, what I mean is, when I'm in full screen mode, Linux doesn't fill the entire screen. It looks small.

Damn you all, I just downloaded Ubuntu, I hope you're happy...(well I'm just seeing if it'll work with my printer, because on my desktop PC it won't read it - this hopefully will determine the problem (OS or BIOS) ) first overcoming the problem of installing it, I'm gonna try and use my iPod as I have no blank CD's and it's too late to nip off into town and buy one. If my printer works, then hooray for Linux! If not, then screw the manufacturer!

Try upping your resolution in ubuntu itself. You can do so from the admin or preferences tab somewhere.

Has nothing to do with linux, it is Virtual Box who have an larger screen resolusion then linux. Would be the same if you did it with xp or vista or whatever. It is solved my adjusting Ubuntus screen resolusion to match the resolusion of your host OS, and then press the host key and F to maximize to fullscreen.

Yes, I found this sort of thing with Damn Small Linux, it stays the size of the resolution, the virtual machine doesn't stretch the resolution to fit.

I'm running my OS at 1280 x 1024, DSL was running at 1024x768 under that Virtual Machine, so it's gonna be smaller. Now I'm waiting for Ubuntu to transfer from my laptop to my iPod to my desktop...grrr, I wish I had an ethernet card in my Desktop comp...oh wait wrong thread...

How to change your screen resolution in Ubuntu:

Go to System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution

And then it is just to set it there.

I'm maxed out my resolution in Linux, I'm going to get the graphics card drivers and see if that helps. I will change my os'es resolution in the meantime. I can't get sound drivers for some reason, do you know how to?

Keep in mind that your VM may not work with nvidia/ati display drivers, since your display is emulated. Make sure you check that out before attempting to install them

Is there anyway to actually install Linux from the virtual machine onto my actual PC? Or do I have to burn the ISO file onto a CD?

This is simple and dirty:

I use it in vista and it works great. It's free, and has very little features, but it does what it says.

OK, when asked to install Ubuntu you need to create a new partition, it gives you a slider. Is this to re size the windows partition? Or how big the Ubuntu partition is going to be?

It will divide up the hd (or if it is the main partition, have only done it on one unpartitioned hd) into two peaces, and the % is how large the Ubuntu partition will be in %. If the hd is filled with about 55 % and you choose 50 % you will propobly encounter problems. If the hd is filled to 35 % and you choose to make an split an 50 % there should not be any problems with data loss (but to be sure that the windows partition is defragged, just to be on the safe side). So be sure you take free space.

OK, I defrag every night but I will do one now, I just wanted to be safe because I'm not giving Ubuntu to much HD space, and I wouldn't want to accidentally shrink my windows partition down to 40 gigs.

I think there is an partition program on the LiveCD. Look on the System menu, think it´s in the "Administration" part, but might be wrong. It is called "Partition Editor". But if you do not find it and find something called "GParted" it´s the same thing (but I believe it is the first one). You can use it to manually partition the hd.
