If you need it smaller, partition the harddisk with Gparted and then install linux into that partition

lol, you can shrink the drive as small as you want. It's only giving you a min of 48gigs because that's what windows is using.

I use up about 5 gigs on my linux partition, anything above that is safe.

How long should partitioning take? I have a 250 gig drive. I'm using the built in partitioner

A while. Make sure you back up your files first.

Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes at most.

is linux up and running now? You can install gparted and resize appropriately.

Scratch that, load up partition manager, I think it's installed by default...

Boot linux, and resize the windows partition with linux's partition editor.

as I already said, ubuntu has the built in partition manager. Use that.

It's under admin as "Partition Manager", I'm pretty sure it's there by default.

Otherwise, use gparted as we've said multiple times.

Not there. I will use gparted. Do you boot it from a cd? It's an iso file.

im assuming so, if you downloaded the livecd (which you obviously did).

Alternatively, you could just boot your ubuntu cd and use the Partition Manager there (it's definitely there on the ubuntu live cd)

Ah ok. When you get internet working, the first thing I'd recommend installing is gparted, it's quite handy.

Just as an sidenote, the inbuilt partition editor Jerico2day was talking about is actually GParted. It does not get installed with the OS, but you can find it and install it with the package manager.
