1 million in UK
Sony have now sold 1 million PS3s in UK. This is faster then PS2 which reached it in 50 weeks and 360 took as long as 60 weeks (Wii only 36 weeks, but nobody is surprised by that).

Sales prediction
Electronic arts predict PS3 to outsell 360 this year, with Wii on top.

wow.

I guess the novelty of the PS2 is finally starting to wear off as well as the console life too.
But, its really weird too. Cause the PS3 is really high priced, and with high priced games. All the consoles nowadays are too much overly priced and with a lot of games for me.
I'll um just stick with my beloved PC.
Actually, I have 2 of them.

I wonder if there has been a price drop in the PS3 and/or better games have come out? hmmmmmmmm....

Yeah, the PS3 has dropped in price recently, and they reckon it might go down in price more as they've made the production of Bluray lasers cheaper recently. Fair play to Sony, I never expected them to have a chance this round of the console wars, but I was wrong.

It has?

And I don't understand-- this news was released in June 2007, according to the article.

Let's hope the PS3 catches up this round.

That's severely unimpressive, considering the Wii sold 600,000 units within its first 10 days or so. Even though the Wii took longer to reach 1 million, reaching half that in roughly ten days is much more impressive

The Wii might have taken longer to reach 1,000,000 because there weren't any to buy.

So, just having better games didn't hold the xbox on "top". People are actually going for power...

Or the price drop did it.

Either way... I love all the systems.

It's no surprise the PS3 was selling faster than the PS2, with the immense hype train in the months before the PS3's release. Does anyone else remember people selling PS3s for $5k on ebay?

I'm glad to see things are finally smoothing out for Sony now, it was all looking very expensive (for them as well as the customers).
I haven't heard anything about XBox for a while but hopefully they are more on the ball too.
I find it funny how people slate the rival company of their console manufacturer; the reason you have a good console is because of the competition.
I think the XBox has found its feet and gained its own personality, which is great, we don't want identical consoles.
I like having the 360 and Wii around but I don't want one myself; some people need to learn that not everyone is the same, and variety improves the industry as a whole.
I have a PS3 and love it; it has everything I want, except for the fact that I can count the decent games off on one hand, but that will improve, I'm happy that I've invested my money in it, the lack of games has given me time to play some PS2 titles that are still awesome, and by the time I get bored of those GTA IV will be released and I'll say goodbye to the world for the next few weeks

Sorry for the Raven-esque ramblings

Ugh... Halo single player is so repetative... I finally got a working xbox and have been playing through Halo 1. Really really quite dull... hoping it picks up and hoping Halo2 is more fun.

Halo 2 and 3 multiplayer is fun with friends though I will admit.

The article says that Wii have reached 1 million in UK in only 36 weeks, which is a record. No one here doubts that Wii will sell loads and loads.

I find these articles to be very interesting considering how many (here and in other places) have so long talked about how badly it will go for PS3, some even predicting the end of Playstation... I'm glad this thread haven't turned badly (yet).

I believe the PS3 is doing better and will do even better over the year due to 3 things: The price cut, more and better games coming out and BD is winning the format war. I believe winning the format war will mean a whole lot over time.

What a lot of people doesn't really understand about the console market is that nothing is settled during the first year or two and that 10 million units more or less doesn't really bother Sony much as the PS2 have sold over 120 million units. And finally the owners of a PS2 is not in a hurry to jump on the next generation, Sony are still selling them, and when they do they will most likely stick with the same brand. This is how the average consumer acts.

It's really quite scary how fast that little white box full of last-gen technology sells for only 20 quid less than the Core 360.

I think one of the main issues of the Xbox 360 falling behind in sales has been the dogma that they tend to die a lot.
It still is a major issue, however it is quite confusing that they've now reached the 1million mark here in only a few short months.

As on release they did extremely poorly. Even now it is very easy to obtain a PS3, which are still not selling very well even in the area I live which is one of the richest in England.

While the Wii, DS and Xbox 360 are more difficult. Infact over Christmas here it was impossible to get any of the consoles except for the PS3 and Xbox 360 Arcade. I have a feeling that much of those 1million numbers has been caused primarily by the price-drop and the fact of companies trying to shift their ex-stock (i.e. units Sony have stopped producing like the 60GB and 80GB versions)

Leaving the Wii out of it, the Xbox over Christmas had some phenominal sales. As in November it had sold 12million units (shipped 15million), by the end of January it was up to 16million units sold (18million shipped)

No idea about the PS3, but with them now retiring the 80GB officially; leaving only a 40GB for the time being and no stable news on what will replace it (i.e. larger HDD of 120/160GB is the current theory) it's difficult to say how the public will react.

Although it certainly is only selling faster than the PS2 within Europe. Worldwide it is far far behind. As the PS2 sold 10million units within 12months of worldwide release, it was the benchmark that Microsoft shot for and were only just shy of. (about 500,000 units shy iirc)

The Wii however just totally blitz the record by doing it in less than 4months. It's quite obvious that the Wii is going to be the most popular console this generation, simply because it appeals to a much wider demographic.

As far as the PS3-360 sales go though, I firmly believe the 360 will remain ahead sales wise. Remember the first 12months are always the best (especially christmas periods) for console sales.

While it can be said "But the PS3 has a few huge titles due out" these titles everyone are waiting for will either be available on the Xbox 360 at the same time, or are due out for this Christmas. (MGS4 for example)

When you compare this to the Xbox 360 line-up for this year, which includes Mass Effect 2, Perfect Dark 3, Gears of War 2, Lost Oddessy (Xbox 360s own Final Fantasy from the same creators); plus whatever is officially unvieled at E3/GDC this year.

This year will definately be domination by titles, and with such strong sequals coming to the Xbox 360; along with the new HDMI consoles being able to shake off that unreliability of the console hardware.

That's really what most of the lack of sales for the 360 come down to right now really. I mean there is very little doubt, which is really a better multimedia platform; but people have shyed from it simply because they hear the 360 dies alot.

Something that actually only a very small percentage of them have.
The 360 support dept takes a while to get 360s back to people quite often and it is believed this is because they've got too many cases which is true, but something many should take note of; their support/warrenty dept was setup of the intention of about 10-20 cases a week of hardware failiar. Not 50-60 cases, which has been the problem.

I mean bare in mind that the original Xbox the biggest issues was the power-cord might catch fire, on rare occassions the consoles would die. They thought it would be the same for the 360. Mis-judgement on their part really, but the new machines really do solve this.

Once the stigma of consoles dying is out the door, I really see the 360 becoming a much stronger presence on the market.

who cares which console sells more?

really... it seems kind of immature...

*insert classic mom lecture about not jumping off of a cliff because all of your friends are*

I'm not saying that buying a PS3 is like jumping off of a cliff. Just that you should buy whichever you want, and the number of sales it has should have nothing to do with it.

The way I see it Peter is well, Sony just don't deserve to do well.
They've decided to throw as much money at making sure their the best (despite the fact the PS3 would've been just as popular if it was the underdog like it's two predecessors in terms of performance)... and they're really coasting on introducing new technology and their brand name.

Microsoft on the other hand have been fighting with everything they have to prove their worth on the console market, yet still analysts are saying that Sony will once again trounce them.

Nintendo are finally having the leadership they deserve after so many years but purely cause they no longer cater to gamers like myself, which to me feels a bit hollow ya know?
It's like "screw the fans, we can make money off of children and old folk"

So as a brand to me Nintendo really, have repaid that loyalty over the years by just kicking me in the teeth forcing developers to only use that waggle-able controller that is absolutely useless at the best of times. Only really any good for serious casual users.

I truely hate Sony because they're not gracious winners, and they also constantly lie to the public to make themselves sound better. It's like a guy down the pub who is trying desperately to be your mate by claiming he took on a damn near army of hardened criminals only for you to find out he took on one hardened criminal.. and the guy was blind in one eye with half an arm on one side.

It's the lies from Sony that true piss me off.

Microsoft though have been underdogs from the get go, and despite (atleast to me) seeming to have the strongest package of games, features, etc.. Sony will once again come in and just be more popular because of the lies and underhanded crap.

WOW the world will stop when GTA4 hits PS3, well this time GTA will also be released on the Xbox at the same time. CHEAPER
I truely do hope that despite I dispise the GTA games, Microsoft's platform has the most sales and establishes itself as the GTA platform.

They couldn't steal Guitar Hero 3 sales from PS2, which was a big blow.

Could just be me, but I hate it when layabouts get all the credit for stuff they can't actually do; while those who've worked hard for everything are always pushed back in to obscurity.

Um, the BD player in PS3 clearly makes it number one in the multimedia section. On top of that you got both the card readers and you can plug in a USB hard drive (which I've not heard you can on a 360).

I've read one of your insanely long posts, not doing that again

I was able to find an official anouncment for Mass Effect 2 and 3, a rumor for Perfect Dark 3, and Gear of War is suposedly unofficial, though obviously in the make. What makes you think these are comming out this year? Where has that been said? I'd really like to know, because if that's confirmed, it'd be pretty awesome.

And the Wii will be having more hardcore game comming out for in very soon. hopefully they'll sell well enough that the Wii will get some better games. No More Heroes is amazing, but it's still just one game, and I can't see it selling well, though I really hope it does.

Right, let me stop you there. BluRay might have won the format wars, however, the amount of movies disks selling for it are wholly unimpressive sill, mainly because lots of people still don't have HD TVs (including me ), so I don't agree with you. I've got no idea which console has better multimedia capabilities apart from that though, but I do think streaming video is going to become significant over the next few years.

I find it's the worst console that wins. The Game Boy; inferior to both the Game Gear and that other one, think it was by Atari. The PlayStation was inferior to the 64. The PS2 was inferior to the Cube and XBox by miles, the worst value for money, yet it came out on top. The Wii is a bit pants, the worst value for money by far, and it's owning the PS3 and the 360.
Why does the better console never sell better? Should the next generation of consoles have three megahertz processors and they'll sell 32 billion on the first day?

So you're saying they don't deserve their success because they weren't stingy enough on development costs?
They should have produced a second rate console because they'd still generate sales through brand loyalty? That would have been very underhanded.
And what's bad about them introducing new technology?

I think the XBox will crash because of the great games they've bought; the lack of funds given to the console's development will leave it redundant long before the PS3.
Microsoft are a software company and it shows, it seems they think of the hardware as secondary; this is great in the short-term as it means they have concentrated on getting the best games, but in the long term they will suffer because of it.
The 360 is like a rock star; it is living fast and in my opinion it will die young.

Hands down Gameboy and it's clones were always the best handheld game systems, no explanation is even needed there. I'd still buy an old gameboy today to have all my NES titles portable. It was great!

I think the PS1 and PS2 outdid the competition because they came out long before any of the other consoles of their generation. They already had a foothold in homes across the world by the time the other consoles were stepping out the door and the competition didn't have anything amazing to offer above the PS1 or PS2 beyond slightly better graphics. Oh, and Halo *waves finger in the air and rolls eyes*

In the PS1 / N64 era I think that overall the PS1 was a more mature console. It delivered more serious games and despite its limitations stood up to the N64 and did better with graphics many times. The controllers (once they came out with dual shock / analog) were better than 64. You didnt have to swap out the rumble packs for the memory card and it was all around a better system I think. On the other hand N64 offered a lot of fun platformer and adventure games much like the Wii. N64 was more for the fun-loving gamer, but it had it's mature and serious titles as well. That's one thing the Wii sorta lacks. 64 still had GoldenEye, Turok, Perfect Dark and all sorts of great shooters though. PS1 also had the advantage of cd quality audio tracks and things like that as well.

I have a 360 and Wii. I had a PS3 and sold it and refuse to get another PS3 because I find all of their games boring, and a lot of them are still trying to push that crappy Six Axis stuff that dosent work worth crap.

Actually most music on the PS1 used an MP3 like format, in order to protect it, otherwise people could rip the music from games easily.

I think the PS1 did so well because it had a great selection of games available, not because it was that great a console - I mean it's hardware was practically antique compared to the Dreamcast, consoles survive as long as people want to buy games for it. IMO the PSP should have been a portable PS1, and the games simply transferred onto a smaller format, the hardware would have cost less, there would have been a massive back catalogue to re-sell. The PSP can play converted games, but it's hardly something your average chavvy PSP owner is gonna do .

The advantage of PS1 over 64 was the CD player because it can hold 20 times more data then a 64 cartridge. This is why games like Final Fantasy and Mega Man jumped from Nintendo to Sony, both previously very faithful to Nintendo.

I think the great success of PS2 is mostly thanks to the success of PS1. PS3 will ride on the even greater success of PS2 but also the future success of BD which offers 5 times as much storage as the DVD (50 GB vs 9 GB) and the fact that over time many will buy a PS3 simply for the BD player.

More and more people buys HD TVs (even my parents have one) as they go down in price. If anyone in Sweden is looking for a new living room TV they are only looking for an HD TV, 720p at least. HD content is growing, both discs and TV channels. And as the average gamer gets older and older the more money he can spend.

One of the disadvantages of the 360 is that many of the games will come out on PC if they won't come out on PS3. And personally I think FPS games are best with a mouse and keyboard setup, which the PS3 supports BTW.

Absolutely. The price of memory at the time (for the cartridges) was still expensive too. This made the production costs for PS1 games cheaper and a heck of a lot easier. I think Nintendo really dropped the ball by sticking to cartridges at the time, but back then they were 'king of the consoles' and believed they were untouchable, acting much like Sony were being accused of acting when they launched the PS3. Both companies learned a painful lesson from their cockyness.

Just out of interest I thought I would put together a list of computer prices for my blog. It compares the price when they were launched and what that price would be now when taking into account inflation. Its pretty interesting I thought.

ZX Spectrum 48k, released 1982 cost £174, would now cost £445
Commodore 64, released 1983 cost £399, would now cost £970
Amstrad PC1512, released 1986 cost £499, would now cost £1054
Sega Megadrive, released 1990 cost £189.99, would now cost £311
SNES, released 1992 cost £150, would now cost £224
PlayStation, released 1995 cost £299.99, would now cost £416
PlayStation 2, released 2000 cost £299, would now cost £363
XBox, released 2002 cost £299.99, would now cost £352
PS3 60GB, released 2007 cost £425, would now cost £425
PS3 40GB, released 2007 cost £299, would now cost £299

These are kind of random computers because its difficult to find UK launch prices for most machines now. Please remember that the 'now price' is the price with inflation and NOT what the machines are currently worth (before the flames begin).

All consoles suck ass from a straw.
I mean, yeah you pay a lot more for a good pc, but then you can upgrade it all the time, whereas one year and any console is out of date. Also the games on pc are a lot cheaper. £40 for a game on the ps3 or xbox? What a ripoff!

For the cost of a whole new console every year or two depending on how up to date you want to be. If you want a brand new, top of the line graphics card; you have to pay about as much as a 60 GB PS3 on launch day.

Console games tend to get better over the years as the developers learn how to program for them. For example: God of War for PS2 is very impressive looking compared to the early PS2 games.

You don't have to pay to play on PS3, it's free. The difference in game price is easily made up by the extremely cheap hardware, especially the PS3 is sold for much less then it actually costs.

Yeah so you buy a ps3 - £300, for the basic version
A good enough pc will cost about £800

So you can by 12 games, before its comes to the same amount of a pc.

Also are you including the price of the hdtv, surround sound etc?

All in all the price diffrence is not that great, and in the long run you get much more value on the pc. - especialy if u use utorrent

No and I wouldn't.... You don't have to have surround sound or a HDTV to use the consoles...

I already had a surround sound system so I don't factor it into the cost of the console...

Pc gaming is great but it can also be extremely frustrating... I have a copy of Gears of War on PC since launch which I am still unable to play due to a bug which hasn't been fixed and as far as I can tell looks like not being fixed for some time yet... Had I just bought it for my 360 I could have finished it by now...

Also if I buy a game for my console I KNOW it is going to run as expected... even if your computer exceeds the requirements for a pc game there is still a chance that things will not go as planned due to the many differences in hardware configurations...

pirates there be...

PC games beat most console games IMO. Especially when it comes to modding which breathes new life into a lot of games. I generally don't buy PC games unless they are moddable. The completly crap PC ports for games such as Gears of War or Resi4 I completely ignore, if the developer couldn't be bothered to make it playable on the PC at least the same quality as the console game then they don't deserve my money. I play oblivion quite a bit, I've applied so many mods to it, it feels like a different game. Means I get more entertainment for the same price

Anyway I only use consoles for games like Resi evil and racing games, as well as action games like devil may cry

FPS games, RPGs and Strategy games are generally my favorites and I cant stand playing them on consoles. It just doesn't feel right. Although FPS's are quite cool on the wii, shame there are so few of them that are good.

You kinda do for a PS3, games feel kind of bland without it. There are apparently some games that are HD only too. Couldnt play heavenly sword on our old CRT tv because of this. Said that HD was required and wouldn't let us play It maybe because it was an import though...

If you buy a console the day it is released, and you take good care of it and it doesn't break, how long will it remain supported? Six, seven, maybe eight years of a steady stream of games available for you to purchase before the next round of consoles come out. And with a PC? In that 6-8 year period, how many computer components will you need to purchase to keep your computer up to snuff and capable of running the newest, most popular games? And let's not forget, while most people on TGC build their own PC's, the majority of the public don't, and if they want to play a game like Gears of War on the PC, they'll need to get a high-end machine, like a Dell XPS or an Alienware Area-51... and these systems are considerably more expensive than all three consoles combined.

Long term, I'd say buying all three consoles is a better value than buying (or even building) a single highly-tuned gaming machine. Don't get me wrong, I personally prefer gaming on the PC, with a keyboard full of commands and a joystick and all that fun stuff, but I'd have to strongly disagree with anyone arguing that a PC is a more financially-sound investment for gaming entertainment.

There's a few problems with your assertions. Can you name a console that's still supported for 8 years? The PS2 will be 8 years this fall, and that's it.

Also, by the time this fall comes and a new PS2 game comes out (if any), it will not be able to compete with the "newest, most popular" console games, either. It's kind of a moot point.

Well, I got my PC in June 2004. Only a few years later, I've had to add more RAM, my Soundblaster card is fading, and my video card is so out-dated that I have to use low settings for a game as simple as BF2. Comparatively, in that same period of time I could have continued buying console games, and they'd only just start looking equal, or perhaps slightly worse graphically than their PC counterparts, see what I mean?

Of course, if you wait a few months you can get console games much cheaper than £40. You can buy games like "Armored Core 4" and "Beowulf" for the PS3 for £14.99 delivered now from GAME.
My site lets you list their catalogue in order of 'biggest savings' if you are interested
