Is it nessesary to learn DGK before using dark basic?

If so, why

accoriding to the description of the dark basic software, they say we don't need to know c++.

DGK is hard. Thats my biggest complaint. I cant even get throught the first tutorial.

I had the same problem with understanding C++........

In reality, you don't need to know C++, especially for Darkbasic, but I guess it's a useful thing to know if you want a job in computers....

I recommend you persevere with those tutorials, they do seem hard at first, but then you start to make sense of them...

Hah, just had to laugh at this one. GDK is one of the easiest libraries that you can possibly use. It is almost the exact same thing as DarkBASIC (Pro too, I think), except for the fact that it has either db or f in front of all the commands.

@Teddy: You might wait for DGDK.NET to be released and use it with C# or VB.NET. For me it's way better than C++ and more powerful than DBPro.

@kBessa:

More powerful? A COM object more powerful? Can you explain that please.

a com object or not, coding in c++, c#, or vb.net is much more powerful (flexibility/oop) imho than using dbp procedural basic. I think thats what he was saying, not that a com wrapped lib is faster than straight c++

CR got my idea!I was comparing .NET to DBPro.

Procedural languages won't produce a "clean code" you can get with OO languages. At least for me.

Although C++ has more horsepower, I think we, indie developers, benefit from the easy to use of C# or VB.NET.

its probably worth noting that this depends entirely on your coding style though. I'm a c++ programmer by heart through and through, but I use c# and dgdk.net for my tools and editors. But my c# code isnt much different to my c++ code and it would probably make most RAD language users sick

Still, the designer interface is why i use c# for tools and editors

As Im a .NET programmer I make all my things in .NET, but my idea is to make my game in C++ but all to try things fast Im using .NET becuase I speak it..

@kBessa:

Ok, np. I don't care at all for the .Net version because I'm quite happy with the speed I can get out of the normal version.

@CattleRustler:

Yes, you are correct that ANY version is faster and more powerful than the DBP.

I am C++ "Rah Rah" but I code in C# at work "Rah Rah" and I think both are great - and I think Dark Basic Pro is great - In short - they all have their strengthes and weaknesses -

Indie usually = less time = C# easier in my opinion. I personally stick to C++ - but then - I don't have much to show at the moment- but - hey - I'm having fun!

ABSOLUTELY NOT simply program using Dark Basic or Dark Basic Pro a lot of people have done that for years and created some great games.
