Neils - dont have light engine - but I know on meshs - e.g. terrain - you need to have the normals set so they react to light - you have to make sure the object is flagged to react to light (default) Shader's can screw up normal hardware lights - also there are differing types of lights - and the directional one works off values 0 thru 1 (via floats) versus 120 degress or such nonsense.

(Does this help at all?)
