Brain control headset for gamers?
That would be cool

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7254078.stm

Quote: "A neuro-headset which interprets the interaction of neurons in the brain will go on sale later this year.

It picks up electrical activity from the brain and sends wireless signals to a computer"

Will Darkbasic be compatable?

Edit: There actual WebSite is Here

I'd try it...but I still doubt how effectively you could control a 3d world with it. And wouldn't lack of mental focus be an issue with it as well? I know that I can't keep a straight line of thought, so if it actually played off of my thoughts, I'd wind up getting side tracked...a lot...

It sounds awesome! I'd love to try this out

It'd be awesome to play The Force Unleashed wearing this with all the force powers and physics!

Now I've bothered reading the article and watching the movie and it seems very promising.

So, does it recognize hand motions or a thought to lift?

The success of this will depend on the quality of the interaction. If it really is intuitive and works as it should all the time then it's all left to the developers.

from what i could understand, both, IE: with practice by thinking of moving an arm, your 3D arm would move, or you can just move your arm and the 3D Model would still copy?

it would be better than using a nintendo wii anyway, more interaction

Haha, I can just see it now... You've been sitting there playing with this thing for a couple hours, not having to move your hands at all to pick things up and move around, just thinking about lifting your arm.
You go to grab a drink and suddenly wonder why it's not floating up to your face, or why your arm isn't actually lifting up to get it

if i had any money, id buy one of these and a moterised whealchair, (You get the idea)

this would be brilliant for people who are disabled From from the neck down and i would guess quadrapledicts, (Not spelt it right have i), link it up to a large virtual keyboard use use somethink like xvoice, (Microsoft Sam), wouldn't that work?

if you could identify simple forward, back and turning then i could link this to a moterised whealchair, (if anyone wants to buy me one)

heck, for disabled people, Mouse Control, that would be a must, ill buy one when it comes out just to see if i can access it

@Mson: I believe that's part of what this whole mind-control research is for --people that have been paralyzed and/or have had limbs amputated, are able to use computers to control their wheelchairs or possibly link these devices to robotic limbs so they can move again

Modelled and rendered in Blender. Free software ftw.

Too bad it involves having to gell your head every time you want to play it. Debugging your programs that utilize it would be a pain, mostly because of the shower you would take every time you thought you had finished

Sounds great though. If they're releasing this technology later this year, I wonder what will be out in five, or even ten years..

Thinking about this for a bit and where the technology might go in the future. We might be able to control a whole lot of things with our thoughts. I don't think we can get a mind reader (thought to text) although one shouldn't say never. I can definitely see detection of hand/finger and eye movements. Or how about detecting talking without sound?

MSon:
The image on top shows a woman using 2 hands and in the video the guy used his hand to lift but the text at the bottom doesn't mention hand recognition.

Sunflash:
I think the quote should be interpreted that you don't need gel to use it.

What i see in the future is somethink like this being made smaller so it would be more "Discrete" and attached with a GPS Style System so it could locate where you are relative to "Compatable Items", such as light switches, the TV/Computer, Ect

maybe a "basic" Matrix style system, (3D Interactive Internet)

Ho Yes

I believe your right, but the qoute does make it sound as though it IS needed, perhaps just a bad usage of english?

I signed up for the beta testing last night, would be very cool! I also signed up to get the developers SKDLite kit, though I doubt I'll get either

Reading at what comes in the suite, and what each of the three modules claim to be able to do, makes thinking about the furure of gaming with this device VERY exciting!!

But now I hate myself, I was going to attend the Game Developers Convention in San Francisco, but decided against it as it would conflict with my studies... I sould have gone, seeing as Epoc was going to preview it, lol.

I noticed this too. I have signed up to their SDK but heard nothing yet. Maybe if I think hard about it...

This will be awesome! It could be a bit dodgy if there is a sudden power surge though...

lol... I saw it on the news, with a 3d game.
Brain control would be good for coding. You could code hundreds of line per minute!

Zeke:
I usually find that programming is not so much about writing new lines as it is about refining old ones, that's why it's called development. If a brain reading device could understand the chaotic mess of intent behind every line of code, now that would really be something

What would be great would be if you had a modeller where you just pictured the finished model in your head and then the brain scanner would just transferr the mental image into a real model. Would save time
