So i created a level to improve both my skills with fpsc and in leveldesign in general. Setting is an abandoned* industrial plant for which i modeled some props (old generator, aircondition, chainlink fence, pipes), made some segment textures (slapped them on with Firma, which i can strongly recommend), spiced it up with some stock media from the ww2 pack.
The lighting was the hardest part, spent almost two days on pushing the bulbs around and waiting for the full-lightmap testgames .
Below i post some thumbs to my screenies so what do you think...?

*(not a native english speaker so bear with me if i spell wrong or use funky grammar )

The "playerstart"-area is an open backyard featuring the ww2 gas Tank and my chainlink fence. Enter the building to the right...

inside theres a larger hall, neon lit with pillars made in entity workshop and the burned car from ww2.

A small passage not shown here leads to the generator room: generator, window segment modeled myself, the platform is ww2.

A slightly different view from the platform.

The generator...(yes i'm a bit to proud of it )

a dark passage leads to:...

The office- Aircondition by me, the closets and furniture are ww2.

another dim lit passage leads to:...

a storage area, lit from a hole in the roof, containing ww2 boxes and some pipes and aircon i modeled.

I think next must be a ladder to see what's up on the roofs!

Hope you like it. Comments/criticisms very welcome.

I am Jacks complete lack of surprise.

Very nice atmosphere and design. Perhaps a little more trash/machinery/etc in the area for realism. And what industrial plant is complete without pipes?

Best.

Looks great, turn up your lightmap quality though.

X9 or X10? Which version are you running?

@ all: Thanks for your encouraging comments.

@ inspire: i use x9, and build with full lightmapping, textures at 512, shaders off. is there another improvement i missed to make the lightmapping better? pls. let me know and i'll build it with better settings soon!

@xplosys: i really admire your recent game in progress, it has such an original story and your screenies looked great- and yes i have some pipes in the passages and storage area but have to tweak them textures before i show them close. More industrial props are on the way soon as my dayjob allows me at the workbench again .

I am Jacks complete lack of surprise.

Raise you're lightmap quality to about 50,000 in the Setup.ini, longer build times, but some crisp lightmapping

The game looks great dude keep up the good work

twas kind of a joke, but since i said it, i went in and tested it *on v.108* and it didnt effect the framerate, and it looked dead sexy. give it a shot and tell me what you think

well... i did a new testbuild with lightmap quality 100 instead of 10, that nearly doubled build time, the shadows come out a lot sharper...which is great overall, but requires major changes to my lighting...moreover i must test different lower settings since the framerate seemed to drop significantly. maybe my graphics accelerator is to old (nvidia 5200) to handle the new settings but i just needed a reason to buy a better card soon .

Thanks for your valuable help so far and if there is still more to know on gamebuild improvements or anything, let me know!

Really you're frame rate drops? hmmm....

i have my lightmap quality at 50000 and still no drop in speed. at all, actually it seems like test game builds quicker for me....

The game looks awsomelly great!!!

and also thats why you build the game over night, you sleep on it
and yea, you need to add more entities to add realism, go buy model pack 16 and add those entities.

This game has serious potential. It reminds me a lot of Penumbra,
and I love the Penumbra series. Cannot wait to see more!!!

@ Daarbooven: Youve got some talent! The genrator looks very nice, and the Mapdesign is pretty good!

The only Problem is the Lightmapping... If you get a better Graphics Card, it would be great!

Oh, and, The "Big Pack" in the german Board contains a lot of Industrie Windows, maybe you check it out

Thanks for pointing out that pack, wolf, will definitely check it out even if i'd rather do my own segments and entities- just to be unique and to learn how to do it which was the main purpose of this attempt. Which does not mean that i wouldn't look into how other people do it and learn from them whatever i can. Thanks for the encouraging everyone, and for generously offering help even if i don't take it at the moment.

Im glad to see thumbs, I hate having to click on view button to see an awfull image that has wasted my time, there are free image hosting services people, so thumbs up for that.
I like your textures, note to fpsc users, you can change segment textures.

This was always and will be a test level. I have no plans by now to make it into a seriously working game of any sorts. Sorry to maybe dissapoint you. Right now I'm working on a growing library of FPSC ready stuff, stay tuned as the props from my tech demo will be available some day...
