Yesterday I went out and bought Lord of the Rings Online at my local Best Buy. When I opened the box, three things were in the package:

2 game dvds
Map of ME/Quick Reference Card
Game Manual

Nothing else, nothing hidden inside of anything, I'm literally missing very important parts of this game. The front of the box said this:

Quote: "This Box Contains:
Product Key for Full Version
2 Game DVD's
30 Days of Free Play
10-Day Buddy Key
Quick Reference Card
Middle-Earth Map"

I'm missing the product key, and the 30-days and 10-day buddy. I could care less about the two latter but the product key is essential. Pretty much what I spent the fifty bucks on. When I took it in to Best Buy and asked they pretty much spit in my face and told me I was a liar. So now I sit here with eight gigs of unplayable game on my computer

Has anyone had any past experience with this or have any advice on what to do?

Odd, contact Codemasters on this issue, they might be able to solve this. Send them your story, purchase details and a picture of the package contents.

This is exactly why I do not trust online Merchants. I rather walk out to the store to get it personally, so you can check if you got everything in the store

He did buy it locally. Unfortunately he didn't know that best buy is notorious for this. Someone will steal the stuff inside the box, and best buy passes that loss onto the next customer who buys it.

You should go back to best buy and speak to a manager. Basically don't leave until they give you a replacement, and you verify that replacement contains the stuff you need.

If they refuse, you should dispute the charge with your bank if you bought it with a credit/debit card. I doubt Turbine/codemasters can help you, but it wouldn't hurt to try there as well.

Best Buy is a real shop there? Its a webshop over here

EDIT: Also, in my country they put empty boxes on the shelves, and give you the contents in it when you buy it.

Ye, they have giant stores out here in the states. They have a security guard as you walk in to put fear in their customers, and at random times they'll do searches to everyone leaving the store, and if you refuse, they'll call you a thief.

One store I heard about this dude walked off and refused to be searched, and they followed him to his vehicle, threatened to call the police, and blocked the guy from being able to get into his car.

They're a pretty shady business.

I can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic? If you're serious, I've never heard or seen random checks for everyone leaving the store. Some stores do have people at the front that check your bag with your receipt when you leave to make sure you only have what you paid for, but never a random search of the person himself, that's illegal.

I'm serious... though maybe a bit dramatic

Our store has done random checks, where there's a line to leave the store. They don't search your coat or anything, but searching your bag is the same thing.

You bought it, it's yours, not theirs, they don't have a right to search you or your property.

Having worked at Best Buy for 2 years, the policy is to check their bag IF they haven't just walked from the front lanes and obviously bought something, or if the alarm at the front goes off as they try to leave, and search is a strong word, it's more like take a quick peek at the receipt, and glance into an open bag, it's not like they're fishing around for anything.

Also, the buddy key and 30 days free are when you sign up, and the CD key is inside one of the manuals, so unless someone ripped out a page, you do have everything.

Right, and it's also a search of personal property against your own paying customers.

And maybe your best buy is better than others. Our store every once in a while likes to line people up before they leave and check each customer's bag.

It's insulting, unnecessary and slow. It doesn't solve their theft issues, and only serves to keep customers afraid to steal anything in the store. Most of whom are perfectly honest anyway.

No, actually, in lotro it's a separate pamphlet that contain the keys. They're sitting inside the box. There's no way to miss it. There is no cd key, no cd is required to play. All he needs is the key pamphlet to play the game, as you could download the client online if you wanted.

I got really excited when you said that I had looked through the book already but you made me think perhaps I missed it... The manual says: "The product key is found on the inside of your disk jewel case or bundled together with it" This was not the case I guess

On the issue of security, to be honest I've only seen crazy security on black friday, and I don't blame 'em. They often check the bags at my store but that usually happens at a lot at places like target or fry's so I never really thought much of it. In my case some instore security would have been more beneficial...

Looking at my Special Editions manual, I have to say its on the last page in mine( Note : SPECIAL EDITION, I pre-ordered the game)

Though my manual has a hard cover, and has pretty shiny gold letters on it, and is covered in some clothing like stuff. I love that manual

I had the collectors edition, it looks the same as the above picture. The map you did get, it's that thing on the top right.

What you're missing is a 8x11 folded stiff black sheet, on one side is the buddy key, and on the other is your game key.

This is why you should buy everything with a credit card. If the retailer refuses to give you your money back or exchange because you received something suspicious or fraudulent, you can do a chargeback on your credit card.

Don't accept any crap from them
If you have your receipt they at least owe you a refund.

Quote: "Hey Corey, was said box sealed?"

Where I work we break down the boxes before putting them on the shop floor (to stop people stealing them), it is possible that they left the product key in the box and someone stole it but I doubt it.
Either it has been misplaced by the shop (if wasn't sealed) or its been misplaced by the factory.

My Best Buy doesn't take anything out of the game boxes. You get what's on display, that's it. It's probably true for all best buys.

Then they must have security tags.
It must be a mix up at the factory.
Or you actually have it yourself

They don't put security tags on the key pamphlet, which is all that's needed to play the game.

A distinct possibility, did you check against the walls of the box?

Hey guys, I went back and asked to talk to the manager but ended up not needing to. There were different people working in customer service this time and they didn't see any problem at all this time I did however ask to open the box before leaving and they were cool with it. Sure enough, the key was in there. All is good now.

But, if I were a bad person I could have just taken it out of the box, brung it back and said the same story, and gotten an extra key. I'm surprised I got through all this as (relatively) easy as I did...

Anyway, anyone on Nimrodel add Churrobacca as a friend

A store should trust their customers, instead of calling them thieves. Glad to hear they took care of it.
