I'm considering buying Battlefield 2142. But first, I downloaded the public demo to make sure it works okay on my pc. It's a fun game, but I have a problem with it. I can go into the menu and join a server fine, but once I start playing, at some point in the gameplay there's a memory error that crashes the game.

I've been troubleshooting it various ways, including uninstalling the Windows hotfix that was causing the game to crash for some people, but I continue to have this memory error.

The error is generic, with a title of "BF2142 Error" and message reading that memory at a certain memory address could not be read. If anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about, I'll upload a screenshot.

Naturally, I'd rather not buy the retail version until I'm sure I won't have the same problem with it.

My specs:
Processor: Pentium 4 w/HT, 3.00 GHz
RAM: 1024 MB (1 GB)
DirectX: DirectX 9.0c
Graphics Card: HIS Radeon X1650GT (AGP)
Mobo: ABIT AS8-V
OS: Windows XP Home, SP2

All the specs meet the required specs for the program. All the specs except for the RAM meet the recommended standards (1.5 GB is recommended). My graphics card has been tested with the game.

Any help on how to solve this problem would be appreciated!

Cheers

I never trust demos. They always lagg and crash on me.

BF2142 isn't the most stable game, I suggest staying with BF2 .

Have you over-clocked anything?
I have pretty much the same specs as you and have had no issues with the demo

I think BF2 is better than BF2142 anyway.

I've looked, and I like the looks of this one, if possible. Nothing is overclocked.

Indeed

I am hoping Battlefield Bad company escapes the trend of crappy BF games. (BF2142 and BFMC)

Have you played Bf2? If not I suggest you acquire the demo, if you prefer it to the new one it will save you a lot of hassle with this. Its also a lot cheaper than BF2142.

1 gig isn't a very good amount to play BF2 or BF2142 with.

Yes it is, I only have 1 GB and they both run fine on the highest setting.

Quake:Enemy Territory is worth considering too, it's a lot like BF2142.

One thing I do like about 2142 though is the Titan mode, it's just a lot of fun compared to the usual mindless flag watching that is BF.

sounds to me like a corrupt installation or something. i found as with BF2, the demo is the most stable, unglitched version of the game, once everyone buys the game it all goes downhill from there, patches break things, ruin gameplay, cause server crashes.. eurgh

BF2 - I highly recommend this
BF2142 - I gave away
Quake Enemy Territory - If I didn`t have to spend P&P you could have it
COD4 - Same as Quake - single player isn`t all that bad though
Crysis - not paying more money out after that demo. I was expecting more from x10

Concerning BF2 - what clans do you guys play? Infantry only/with vehicles? If you don`t mind telling me that is

And just what were you expecting beyond near photorealism and solid high quality gameplay?

A demo is supposed to sell the product. I expected to be blown away with dx10 graphics pretty much straight away and with dx9 it looks pretty similar - there was a thread not long back about how fpscx10 shows x10 off better than crysis.
Solid high quality gameplay? Not really related to dx10 but the coders, but Ok you got me there. However I`m not keen on super human qualities, its just not what I want from an fps but then thats just my me. I really enjoyed far cry though.

The lag and instability of bf2 and bf2142 upsets and enrages me deeply. What takes the piss is that they've been working on this game series for so long, since the days of bf1942. However, the same problems in bf1942 are STILL in the newer games.

No, not really. Crysis just shows off x9 better than FPSCx9 You can't even compare the two. FPSCx10 looks nice compared to FPSCx9, but I doubt you'd get something comparable to Crysis out of it It does use some of the x10 benefits, but seriously, anything you see in FPSCx10 could already be done on x9 hardware in real graphics engines.

Ok, that's acceptable. I don't like alot of mainstream games some people like so I know where you're coming from.

I only mentioned the solid gameplay as it goes hand in hand with the great graphics. Many times the graphics look nice and the gameplay is bad or the other way around, so I was just saying they did both things right IMO.

I gave away 2142 as well, it really does suck. If you want a decent online FPS go for either Battlefield 2 or Team Fortress 2 they are both some of the best games I've played. Battlefield Heroes looks great and so does bad company but 2142 is just a full conversion mod packaged as a £30 game.

A list of problems i had:

> Lag when my internet is an 8mb connection with a 400kb/s download speed (average)

>My computer is way above the minimum specs but still has graphics lag on low.

> Bugs galore

???

Bf2 and bf2142 were pretty hardware intensive for me, and had the irritation of taking ages to load even on low graphics. Not only that but at least once a week of heavy playing I would randomly crash. Another thing with battlefield is that you can't really be 'pro' at it because high scores are normally just a feature of camping; not to mention the lag and imbalance, that is especially apparent in: 1) in bf2 planes are overpowered, 2) classes are totally unbalanced in 2142 with medic (i think its that) ruling all.

Anyway, if you have troubles with bf I would switch to counter-strike:source or team fortress 2. They are built to run far more efficiently with greater compatibility. As well as that, I find the graphics more eye pleasing and the game play better; but I'm sure someone will argue that bf is better

Agent Dink - alright, I`ll buy it, when I get a job. My graphics were not the same as on some site that I just saw a screenshot on. Says something about overriding the settings. Only problem is I`d have to upgrade from 2mbs internet to 4mbs, Virgin Media - my ISP - has just changed its adverts to include the words "Up To" in their advertisments; when we first signed up to 2mbs the advert clearly stated "guaranteed"...which were stuck with till November

BF2 can be troublesome - but on a more powerful machine there is less trouble ie barely any lag & only crashes after about 5 hours

I love Battlefield 2142, much more than BF2. Titan mode is way cooler than stupid conquest, although the maps get realy boring, and the new map sucks. BF2 always has lots of maps because it is so much easier to mod with BF2 editor. also try downloading the mods, like first strike and conflict, they make the game so much more fun, and they have servers running!

but now back to the topic
i also thought the battle field games where slow, but then i De-fragmented my hard disk and it did wonders for my computer, every thing runs so much faster, you would be alarmed at how much fragmented files build up over time.

Wierd, I'm playing the demo with a view to purchace too. I bet it's you who keeps outbidding me on ebay!

I have 2Gb and it starts hitting the hard drive after a couple of matches. I think there is a memory leak in the demo.

Tip: Best way to improve your kill score is after your Titan shields go down jump of the gun turrets and shoot down ememy transports and gunships as they try to ferry troops over to your Titan

I personally like BF2142, and I've never had any real problems with it other than deleting a soldier.

Granted, the only version of BF2 I played was on the Xbox, which was rather dissapointing.

Argh BF2142 is hacked. Studip hackers can take down Titan shield, and destroy consoles without ever going near them.

Is there any online game without cheats?

I personally have never encountered a hacker before on bf 2142, they are really rare. also the demo servers are easier to hack. make sure your playing on punk buster servers, or else its a hacker compo, where the hackers form around the world will see who can caouse the most havoc on the poor defenseless players. plus, Iv noticed a few glitches recently that you can breach the titan sheild when it is 7/8ths of the way down. pod surfing is the only thing i BF2142 that i actually considered cheating, except for hacking of course. there are alot of things that are not cheats but skills you have not learned yet, like roofing, car bombs, dolphin diving, and pod surfing. pod surfing is unfair though, on guy literally ran over 5 people then went jihad on our walker, it was really unfair.
