I finally got sick of looking at the overflowing mountain of change (cents) spilling over my change bin and took it into the bank. Turns out I had about $45 worth of change! I couldn't believe it lol

It made me wonder though... how much of the nations money is missing due to it sitting in our rooms, cold, alone, and unused. Or how much of it has accidentally been thrown away. It must be in the millions.

So lets count em' up boys! How much change you got laying around your house? Are you going to cash it in?

I'd say I've got about $30-$40 in loose change in my Tin.

It's great when you're stint for cash (or trying to save), but you really want that one thing from the vending machine on the way to class, or when you're at the shops.

Everytime I spend some money, if I have any coins in my wallet, straight into the tin

Last I rolled the change I had I had around $130... My change is about at the point it was before rolling it all the last time. I probably have somewhere between $200 and $220 in change I call it my "car fund" Whatever change I have goes into the car fund It doesn't add up very fast but it's money I'm not able to easily spend so it sits there and accumulates.

I had about $500.00 in change. I just saved my change for about ten years. I rolled it all up and bought a Epiphone casino. I know that $500.00 is a lot but I really did save that much.

probably about £10. I use my change to pay for the washing machine, so it never really accumulates.

That is why I love rounded prices. But sellers love to contribute for the inflation.

I dislike coins. In fact, I have some trauma. Everything started when I was a little boy...

The physics teacher required a copy of a printed material for the next class. He said that it costed R$1,30. Luckly, I had exactly R$1,30 in the little pocket of my skater pants - I used to love them back then ^^. When I went to the school's photocopier, I discovered that the teacher was wrong, because the copy costed R$1,50.

Murphy's law: there was no one who I could borrow 20 cents from, because I neglected it until the last minute; the copy should be ready for the first class of the following morning, and the photocopier was available only at the middle of the first class; other than the R$1,30, I only had a R$50 banknote.

I came back home with R$48,50 in 50 cents coins. The new brazilian 50 cents coin is thick and dense. Comming back home was a degrading experience. hohoho I hate coins.

One day debit card will be more secure. I hope.

If only they more readily sold such wonderful pants nowadays

I'd love a nice pair of jeans with like 20" openings again! Now all we have are these lame emo tight pants and "loose fit" in stores.

lol, well I used to have an ingrowing toe nail that got fungus in it, so it may come in handy.

No doubt my newly discovered mini fortune will go on a new pair of shoes, mine are falling apart...so I suppose I am in a way preventing fungus on my toe nails, just not in the conveniently priced way Duplex suggested.

Mixing everything together in a bag isn't a good idea. The one and two pence coins dominate. Guess I won't be visiting the cash point for a while.

I should win this contest pretty easily. I've been saving my change for about 10 years now.

This is a 5 gallon (about 23 liters) water jug. It is just about full. Currently, it weighs about 140 pounds (63.5 kilograms)!

I'm not sure how much is in there. There is a pretty large ratio of quarters. If I had to guess, I would probably say it is somewhere near $2000. Once it is completely full I'm taking the kids to Disney World

How can you roll it, though?
I mean, if it's a home-job, they would have to break it apart and count out the pieces anyway, wouldn't they?

It'd be great to take that into a bank.
You'd have to go in and say "Hey, tomorrow I want to bring in 65KG worth of coins. Can I see the manager?"

Holy hand grenades!!! That is one heck of a collection of change. Yeah, you win, hands down. Big time!

Lol, I think I'd quit too if I was handed that much change.

I had to roll my change AND put my bank account number on all the rolls. The only ones they checked on the spot where the quarter rolls, which they used a magnet to take out the canadian ones I snuck in lol.

Well at the banks here they just throw your change onto an automatic sorter, that tells how much its all worth in like ten minuets, then rolls it all for bank use.

Exactly, they have to buy the rolls and do it themselves here. At least I'm 80% sure that's what we'd have to do. My parents used to own a few vending machines and would have to roll all the change before bringing it in.

I'll definitely have to roll the change before I bring it to the bank. The "wheelbarrow" method would be worth trying though! lol

I plan to at least roll the quarters and dimes. If I am feeling really ambitious, maybe I'll do the nickels too. I'll take the pennies to one of those change machines. It isn't worth my time to roll those.

I think I'll be saving for another 2 years before I cash in

I'd give yourself about a week of rolling them for about 30 minutes a day, maybe an hour. It actually took me close to 30 minutes to roll $45 worth. Hate to think how long your pile is going to take!

At least you don't have to worry about getting your money stolen by a thief, I don't think anyone would want to carry that. And if they did, they wouldn't get far lol.

I think I'm gonna roll my change when I get bored of reading the internet on my laptop. Our power is out and I only have like an hour battery left I'll save a bit of battery to tell everyone how much change I have. Haha.

EDIT: $192.79 Not quite as much as I thought, but still awesome to know I have all this virtually unspendable money Darnit. Ran out of quarter rolls and have $10 worth of naked quarters still. Oh well.

Meh, I used to be really bad with change. I had this problem where for some reason I hated to have change and would ditch it every time from my pocket to carrier bags.

First bad one was when we moved desks in work in 96. That was about £250 ($500) in change from lunchtimes. I forgot about it in my sidedrawer and the bird that got my old desk found it (along with about 150 Kinder egg toys). We gave it to charity in the end.

Next bad one was at my old landladies place. She was getting fed up of the change in my room so she said she would sort it out and take it to the bank. Ended up being about £400 ($800) worth of change. She managed to get me drunk on Vodka and got £150 ($300) out of me playing blackjack and poker. Sigh.

Worst one though was when I was buying my car in 2002. Thought I would cash in my change from the last 2 years to help buy it and ended up finding £1500 ($3000) in change. Was quite amusing handing it all in.

I've got over the change thing now though. I had a little £200 ($400) blip about 6 months afterwards, but since then has been fine. Helps that Cypriot money also comes in 1 pound notes. Ahhh... Annoying Euro now though. Must curb change hatred...

Cheers

no sid i was not looking for dirt. i already let it go and wont start it up again. i just found your thread about this subject and posted here because i started a little hobby a couple months ago seeing how much change i can save up over the next year. any other time i have tried to save change i would get $30-$40 and end up spending it. so far this time i am doing very well and having fun doing it.

sid as far as i am concerned our little disagreement never happened and i wont let that kind of thing happen anymore.

@Dazzag: Holy Crap dude, that is some serious change! $3000!? How heavy was it to carry all of that? Can anyone calculate how heavy that would be?

Yeah, was like really heavy. If I remember rightly was two carrier bags of it. Soooo heavy. In the end I got loads of small bank bags and had like an entire study floor almost covered in little bags of coins. I was like adding to it at the end with coins from my pockets, jackets, sofa, just to get a nice round number We went to the bank on a saturday when most close early (about 1pm at the time) and there was only 2 tellers for some reason. A big queue though and everyone was looking at me evilly cos it took a while (even with counting machines).

Wasn't worried about being robbed as I walked with thousands to the bank. You literally had to be robbed by a muscleman in Nikes to not be able to catch up with them.
