Hey everyone,

I'm 17 and I have a passion for making games. I want to make one before I go to college. I want to make a 3D rts game but I'm not a kind of person who can write code and I'm not good at math. So, I was wondering, should I get DarkBasic? Do you think I can do it?

Please give me your opinions.

If when you say you can't write code you mean you can't stand to write it, then no, but if you say you can't as in are unable to currently, then yes .

OMG did he say RTS? Are you sure it's not a MMORPG? I think I'm dying finally we get a new person who doesn't want to make an MMO!!

WELCOME!!

Oh and btw if you set your mind to it you can do it! If you can't be bothered learning to program and just want the game to appear forget it!

i started DB freshman year and i think its awesome. I am also not much of a coder, I tried taking programming courses in visual basic, i learned to understand general programming more but i dropped out of that class and switched to I.T. because i realized that i will never be a programmer. But I still do stuff with dark basic because i think its easier than most languages and its fun and it even gives you more freedom to code any way you want when in visual basic you were restricted by certain formatting you have to obey.

There's a whole lot of work going into a 3D RTS, especially if you have no previous experience. You don't have to be good at math though. You also need to make the graphics as well so it's no easy thing. If you want to learn to program then start small, if your goal is not to learn programming then DB is nothing for you. Get an existing RTS (like WC3) and make a mod for it, that's a lot of work on it's own.

Depends on what you're going to college for. If it's for programming I suggest checking out c++ with DarkGDK, or c# with xna. If you're going for modeling or design, DBP is the way to go, you'll know what programming is all about, so you'll be far ahead of your classmates, because you'll know what's needed, and you'll be able to put your skills (design) towards your hobby (programming).

Shouldn't this be moved to DarkBASIC Discussion?

Seriously, how do you make the little blue text come up below your message?

Thanks for replying! I think I'm gonna go for it. I forgot to mention I'm already a modeler and farely good at texturing, so that element of game design is nothin to worry about. Besides, it's the fun, creative part. I watched a tutorial of DBPro on youtube and it looks SO easy to learn! I'm totally gonna gor for it. Thanks guys!

Good luck with it, programming is a lot of fun, and the math is only as difficult as you want it to be. There are always clever ways to get around complex algorithms . I strongly recommend you start out as simple as possible. Whip up a text adventure or a "Pong" knock off to learn the most basic elements of programming and establish a footing in how commands are generally structured, and to give you an idea of how much work it'd take to accomplish what you're ultimately aiming for.

Cool, maybe you could show off some of your stuff in the 3D section.

Well, that's gonna set you back a little bit. And if you want this done before college, at 17 it sounds like you only have a year or so.

Look around the forums, there are tutorials that can help you.

i think making the graphics is one of the more fun parts, the most fun thing is putting them in the game.
