I am building a new rig, but I already have the video card that I am going to use for the new machine (XFX 8800 GTS 320 256 PCIe) in the current system. When I build the new machine I am taking the 8800 with me, so this system will need a fairly decent card to remain "gamer friendly" but doesnt need to be an 8800. Can anyone suggest a good, inexpensive, pcie(1.0)16x, dx9, nvidia video card?

I went from a first gen pcie 16x nv 6800 straight to an 8800 recently and I am not familiar with the cards in between. Anything in the 8xxx family that fits the bill?

thanks for your help

Well a $70 7600GS or GT could get the job done for X9
A $100 8600GT is pretty fair too.

I'm sorta in your boat there CR. I dunno much about anything in between the 6800 and 8800. However I have seen an 8600GT performing really well in Medal of Honor Airborne.

thanks for the suggestions, I am realizing that the 8x series all the way back to 8500 is dx10, so I guess my dx9 stipulation is not necessary.

I think ill find a low priced 8600 card so this old box will remain decently gameable, while not wasting cash too bad on a downgrade card - lord knows I need those resources for the main memory in the new machine, DDR3 memory is expensive!

thanks for the help

The 8400gs for me was able to play cod4 on low really well. I suggest it if you want uber cheap. Otherwise the 8600gt/gts is the way to go.

Hurray for teh logd!

I highly recommend a 7950GTX - these things simply eat anything that DX9 throws at it, I can run pretty much anything at full detail and res, never seen it slow down.

less is more, but if less is more how you keeping score?

I would have suggested the 8600GTS but pick it up off ebay, everyone is upgrading to 9600GTs and 8800GTs so there is a flood of cheap 8600GTS available right now. I picked up 3 for £60 at Christmass including a nice bargain fanless one with Supreme Commander game

Would have been useful to me, but my 8600GT just shipped today.

Don't get DDR3 memory. It costs a lot of money just to get it to a speed where the high latencies don't slow it down, and even then the performance boost will be nearly unnoticeable. DDR2 memory is fast enough, this is why most/all new motherboards support both DDR2 and DDR3.
