(I ask this because I found a download for Directx10 for windows XP)

You have to have Windows Vista and a DirectX 10 graphics card.

I don't know what the others are talking about.
See this link and you'll know that you can run it on XP. Please read the link first though

If you dont want to get rid of XP, dual boot with XP / Vista.

i ve been getting pretty curious about this myself, ive seen these x10 downloads for xp also. if you could get x10 on xp, do you think it would work, or not having vista would keep it from working?

The DX10 Version for XP you are Referring to is actually a mod ver of DX9L.... Which was and early Dev version of DX10... it work on XP but you well only get 5 FPS on XP from DX10 as there certain Vista system files that you need to make DX10 work properly... like how Vista buffers Video Memory with system memory etc.. Without these things DX10 would run like crap..

Directx 10 can't be ported to xp because xp doesn't support wddm2.0,and even if microsoft would think of trying to make xp support the new wddm2.0 they would have to rewrite half of the whole registry.Which would cost them almost like making a new os or a bigger service pack(remember the delay of Vista which was caused by the development of xp sp2?).

All of the current dx10 fakes are just cut down versions of it,so even if they would work the image quality/fps can only be worse.

Also the OS cannot use/adress those fakes because it simply isn't programmed for them...

Neither any other program using dx10 can see the directx10 because first it checks your OS name, and if it isn't spelled Vista,Crysis for instance won't even display the very high option like it doesn't on any other API(except dx10.1)which is also a vista exclusive...

And the fpsc x10 map editor works on xp because the editor doesn't need the advanced directx processes, but naturally you won't be able to test the game...
