Hey all,

I'm really wanting to buy DBPro, but I'm also gonna buy an Alienware laptop before college in a year. Which should I get: Vista Ultimate and look to the future of software and gaming? or the trustworthy XP? What do you think?

Halo 1 was revolutionary, Halo 2 was revolutionary, Halo 3 was... a mixture of Halo 1 and 2. That's just sad.

Bundled with a new system I'd go for Vista. Which is exactly what I did when I got my new laptop recently.

You need Vista to get DX10 and to play games like Halo 2 (and I think Crysis?). The first service pack for Vista is just around the corner so it will probably fix a lot of problems. I wouldn't pay for XP anymore, which would be the case if you buy a PC with XP instead of Vista.

crysis CAN be played on xp (like I play it)
but for true ultra-high graphics(not the almost-ultra high of the hacked xp) you need vista.

Depends on your needs. DBPro will work under Vista, I know because I have tried it myself. The main reason I switched back to XP was because a lot of the games I tried to play did not work with it (it complained several times about OpenGL, and other ones would just not work, like Civ 4). Most games do however work. And the games I was talking about was often "old".

If you do have XP already (not OEM), you can always go for Vista and switch back if you do not like it. Vista is an decent OS, and even if I prefer XP better.

Alright, so Vista it is. Thanks for the input. I can't wait to get my hands on DX10.

If it's Dual Core and got 2gb RAM go Vista.

XP is very insecure compared to Vista and it don't have DX10, I wouldn't use XP anymore unless it was for a low spec PC.

an alienware laptop for college? i know what you'll be doing secretly when no teacher's looking, just don't try to yell "HEADSHOT F*** YEH" too loud

for futureproofness, i'd say go with vista, but for presentproofness, I hear of many people getting fed up with vista and "upgrading" (in their own words) to xp to be able to play current gen games. I'm still on XP, and I play all the most recent games on highest spec etc just fine, so i have no reason to "downgrade" to vista

secondly, i dont think i would be able to cope with vista's nanny reputation, where you can't do anything without responding to 10 confirmations asking "are you sure you want to do this" or w/e, that I hear so much about.

and with the more bad stuff I hear about vista, as much as i really really REALLY HATE LINUX i think i'd be more than willing to switch to that than have to go to vista...

furthermore, it is possible to run DX10 on XP, and to set it up is very simple, and it also works. Company of Heros FPS increased by 10hz.

vista needs to be around for a few years, and xp has to get really long in the tooth for me to really even consider vista. I did and said the same with the jump from 2kpro to xp pro. I didnt switch to xppro until late 2005. by then the bs had all been sorted. well, mostly all of the bs

Turn of UAC, jeez. It makes me mad that people complain about it and don't turn it off, even though you can. Also SP1 reduces the amount of times, about 1 in 4.

Vista has few compatibility issues for me, in fact all I needed to do was download a newer driver and they were fixed.

It starts up SO much faster than xp and Linux, and it's memory management is superior to that of Linux or xp(I know, though you need at least 512 of ram). No you do not need more than 1gb of ram, I use 1 gig now and it runs speedy quick.

I have Ubuntu on this computer, I used it for a bit, and I have Xp on my other computer.. they just don't compare. In fact I am thinking of getting rid of Ubuntu, it's just taking up hd space.

The rule I use for Vista or XP apply to the PC's specifications:

I assume alienware will be quite high so if it matches or exceeds:

2Gb RAM
nVidia 8xxx/ 9xxx or ATI 2xxx HD

The ram will give you good Vista performance, and the graphics cards are Direct X 10 compatible. If you have an older card and plan to upgrade to Direct X 10 later on then you may do so. Though 8400 cards are quite cheap now.

I think a lot of people did that, me included. XP solved a lot of problems so people upgraded. There wasn't a lot of reasons to upgrade from 98 to 2k as far as I can remember. And nobody liked ME.

Well, if there were no XP-only games, I would still use 98. I hadn't more problems than with XP, and apps I used still worked on 98...
And 2k sucks... Well, not really it was the same diffrence like between 2 editions of FIFA (the new ones).

With a new Windows on the horizon (in 2010), I'm most likely never getting Vista, although if I buy a new computer any time soon I most likely won't pass it up. I guess it all boils down to how much longer I can keep using this computer from 2004.

That is kind of an weired statement, that ME would just be an beta, because they have two different systems under the hood. ME was based on old DOS, while XP used and use NT.

And Matt Rock, there will always be an new OS on the horizon.

2k is awesome. It runs on old hardware, (I've had it on a 266mhz machine with 64mb ram), something XP could never run on.

2k is the OS of choice on any older hardware, quite frankly. It's almost as good as XP, but won't run .net, last time I looked, anyway, and it has far lower system requirements.

Going back to 98 these days would be laughable, but going back to windows 2k isn't much of a stretch.

Hurray for teh logd!

That means WinME - bad, with bugs; XP - better, with some bugs fixed... And it probably will be with Vista and the next Windows...
