Got all the hw setup nice nice, POST all ok, left BIOS settings all default. Booted from WinXP Pro cd, formatted HDD NTFS (WD 500 GB), windows loads up ok. Setup lan/internet connectivity, Installed video card drivers, all ok, snooped around a bit, went to bed.

This morning all ok booting up to windows, installed soft firewall app I have been using for years, installed ok, at end of install Blue Screen. Meh. Reboot, computer wont boot to windows, passes all post tests, but right at the moment where you should see the xp splash screen with the progress bar... nothing. Black screen.

Heard there were many bios updates for this board (Asus Maximus Extreme). Downloaded latest bios rom to usb thumb drive, used bios ezflash2 and updated the bios to latest without problems or errors. Will still not boot to windows. All post tests still ok.

What would you try next in this situation?

One thing I am going to try when I get home is run the WD diagnostics against the hdd, see if it reports ok (reason I didnt prior was I dont have a floppy drive in the new system, so I was lazy) Also its quite possible that the drive needed to be formatted and partitioned with the WD Tools, as opposed to windows format which took 2 hours.

any suggestions on how you would proceed would be cool, because after I find thet the hdd is ok the next step is to reformat with the wd utils, and reload winxp, which I already activated

unfortunately, like a bleary-eyed dumbass at 6:08 AM, I didnt write down the error code. I know, I broke one of the top ten cardinal rules of pc building , and I have been building my own pc's from scratch since 1991 - shame on me.

I do happen to have a winxp boot disk so thats an option as well to try and see whats up before reformat, reinstall last resort.

heres the system specs in case anyone wants the info to help me diagnose the issue:

MOBO: Asus Maximus Extreme (updated to latest bios 1001 1/17/2008)
(all OC settings at default/auto, no custom changes)

CPU: Intel Q6600 Quad Core 2.4 ghz FSB 1066 LGA 775

VID: XFX Nvidia GF 8800 GTS 320

MEM: 2x1GB Corsair DDR3 1333 Dual Channel non-ecc

HDD: WD SATA 3gb/s 500GB

CD: Asus CD/DVD ROM SATA 48x/16x

OS: WinXP Pro sp2

Case: CoolerMaster Cosmos 1000 Steel ATX Full Tower

PSU: Antec TPQ-850 ATX 2.0+

thanks

Boot up in Safe Mode? Then try uninstalling everything you installed prior to the blue screen, or try restoring a previous windows date with the recovery tool perhaps.

sound advice, but I would think this is not going to be related to xp/os issues or anything that was installed. I am suspecting cmos/bios/hdd/mem timing issues, since the hw is so new, but I will take your advice too Maybe I can snoop around in windows somehow and recreate the error.

thanks

turns out the drive was not configured properly AND blackice hosed it when that happened. I wiped the drive and reformatted with the wd utility (which takes seconds as opposed to hours with windows xp install disc) and reinstalled windows. Then of course it locks me out via Genuine Advantage because I had activated my key previously, so I had to call MS etc etc and get it unlocked. I did all the windows updates and installed key stuff like DX, and video drivers, made a restore point and retried BlackIce. BSOD again! but this time windows survived. I uninstalled blackice and I think I am looking for a new firewall app.

Anyway I am transferring my steamapps folder over from my other machine... priorities

Instead of a Restore Point, you should have done a system Ghost.

For a fresh install on a new system, ghost it once it's up to date, then if you ever need to reinstall, you can simply copy it back to the HDD.
And, next time you do copy it back, update all your software, etc, that's part of the ghost (adding/removing any new/old), then make a new ghost image of that - nice and clean ready for next time

If you select "<Quick>" in the format settings for the XP install, it'll do it in a couple of seconds too

I like Gigabyte never had an issue with them.

When XP wont boot hold F5 or F8 and boot in safe mode then uninstall the last app you installed.

For a different firewall try ZoneAlarm works good in my setups.

I had a bluescreen after installing a new DVD reader drive (which actually works, BTW) claiming that the boot sector was corrupt/invalid. It wasn't, it was just that my third HDD's power cable had come undone.

I fail at life. No, really.
