Have you given it a texture, as in an image file to colour it in?

save it as a .obj file, download uvmapper, make a texture, save the texture, re-save the model, convert the new model to .x, apply the new texture.

i have made a uv map with 3dsmax. then exported my max file to 3ds and 3ds to .x
