Ok so I was thinking of making a sort of general/young adult discussion forum in the near future and was wondering what your opinion was on such sites.

Well, sorry, you're right, should have posted useful info too, so I will now.

It's not a bad idea. But you need a reason for all these kids to come to your forum. Why don't they just go sign up for the other forums out there that are like this when they will have alot more kids to talk to and share ideas with who are already signed up? Creating sites just for a forum unfortunately rarely works out. I think your site will need to attract people for other reasons first. Honestly it wasn't all a joke when I made the school comment. Why can't kids just converse at school, myspace and other networking sites that are already established?

I mean it works if you have the right marketing approach (depending on the site).
Like there are anime sites out there that are Just forums but then again most of the successful forums started in 2002. apperantly 2002 is the year to be a forum lol.

So with boards like that, is this somthing YOU would join?

thank you for your input.

I personally wouldn't join as that's not my kind of forum... not to mention I won't be a teenager anymore this summer.

2002 was 6 years ago... crap it's gone fast, but yeah, that's given the other sites a long time to get the jump on you with members and all. They jumped into the mix when the internet wasn't so big and there weren't as many options for people to pick from.

Not trying to discourage you but you need to go about it the right way. Find something to attract people to your site and get members as fast as possible. Maybe just make it a forum for all your friends / classmates at first, but try to get them to tell all their friends to join up and so on and so forth. To be successful it will have to have an active user base.

Im trying to put together a group of 10 people called a launch team.
And have them all make about 50 posts before I would start marketing or passing out the link to the site. That way when people first saw it, it would have lots of posts on it.

My alternate idea for a forum was a Theatre based forum. Seeing as there are like 2 of those out there. YET there is prolly a reason for that.

I think this is a good idea and believe Agent Dink has given the best possible suggestion to start - make it a forum for your class mates / school first, this is how Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) started, he created a site for his uni campus and then it grew from there.

The mistake people make is trying to grow too big, way too quickly, there is nothing wrong with having BIG ideas, in fact it should be encouraged!! THINK BIG, act small is the way to go, then gradually increase, no point in trying to be big at first, as you need to assess the workload, traffic etc...

Also, a good extension to this site could be an actual 3D environment, you and your friends can hang around in, again nothing too big at first see how things grow, but something like this is fun and potentially rewarding, ideas like the one your thinking of could develop into a multi-million dollar company, it happens!

so stop trying to seek 'approval' just go out and do it - the only way to find out if people will use it or not.

one other thing, you should really adopt an invitation registration system at first, I'm not saying that it will prevent weirdos, but, if anyone can sign up, users could pretend to be teens when in fact they may be a 40 year old perve, just a thought!

Perhaps you can tell me, as I see people from this forum who want to start one of their own. They make incentives for people to join, and advertise here for members. What I don't get is....

Why? What is your incentive? What do you get from it? Is it a "I own a forum" thing, or do you plan to get income from it, or what? If it's not supporting a product like this one, I think it would be a lot of work, and no return. I don't see the draw, so I'd like to know.

Best.

In response to your question, I guess I would say I do it because its fun. The draw is the uniqueness of it. Which is what we are still trying to develop. I mean its only been open a few days, its not going to grow over night. But there are lots of little things in place to keep it active and what not. Such as the launch team that constantly posts and makes new threads. And then we are currently working on our image and marketing.
We still need a logo and all.
Another thing is, we are looking for an additional (Female) moderator who can put in a couple hours a day. Mainly because so far our staff consists of all guys and we would like to even things out. Since we have boards where people can seek help or advice it would be nice to have a female perspective on the site.

But I dont know if anyone here would be intrested. doesnt hurt to ask I suppose.

This is basically what Habbo Hotel and millions of other forums are for.

What suddenly makes you wanna do this though?

Well I have been running forums for about a year now but up until now they have been anime forums. So I guess I just wanted to try somthing different. Plus I have always used Simple Machines as my software but I got vBulletin recently and wanted to learn how to use it so it was a good opertunity.
I like making these so I can learn really. Its fun experimenting with forum software. And its even better when people like the site your working on.

Sounds good. I put up web sites to see how far I can take them, what works and what doesn't. I just thought there was something about them that I wasn't seeing. It still seems like too much work to me, which is why I never tried it. LOL.

Good luck with it.

Best.

Threads: 120, Posts: 731, Members: 43, Active Members: 30
Its doing pretty well.
We some new staff members and I changed some of the boards.

Feedback is still welcome and I would really appreciate some constructive critticism.

Note: Im not posting here to get people to join (although your more than welcome to), I put it here so I could get some advice and comments.

Does the site look appealing to you?
Does it seem welcoming and friendly?
What do you like/dislike?

Thanks for the help.

Well for now it looks awesome. You can make a post on the forum to ask the users what they think should be changed as well. What I found is popular for some reason (none of my forums have been even 5% as successful as yours but) people like it when you allow them to make smileys for you. All you do is make a rule or something that states something like mine did like this.

Quote: "
"Your site name here" is allowing users to upload their own custom smileys! Now this has a few rules that follow:

-Smileys must be "SizexSize (avg is 16x16)"
-Once you upload a smiley you are giving complete ownership over that smiley to "Site Name"
-If you upload a smiley you do not wish to belong to "Site Name" you have 24 hours to contact me and have it removed
"

Those don't have to be your exact rules and statements but that was mine, and I got about 10 users from some friends who joined and just started uploading smileys to be used on the forums.

do you love video games a lot ¿¿¿ then comeon down too game zone252 @ http://www.freewebs.com/gamezone252/

I wouldn't mind it I guess...

MOD EDIT: Don't post your age on the forums!

If someone says "pls" because it is shorter than "please" I say "no" because it is shorter than "yes"...

Hmmm, I need another hint. Can you legally consume alcohol yet?

Anyway, sounds like a cool idea, but I wouldn't like it, it sounds like it would be out of control to me. Heavy mod lockdown!

Well you don't have to put up the smileys people submit, just make it to where it emails you the smiley, you decide if you like it then upload it if it agrees with everything you set.

So I was thinking of possibly changing the focus of the site a bit since right now its really general.
So, I put together a little list of possible things.
What do you guys think would sound the most appealing?

List of things we can focus on:
+ Music
+ Sex
+ Government
+ Digital Art
+ Gaming
+ Life
+ How to pickup girls/guys
+ Self Help/Advice
+ Books
+ Theater
+ Booze

I was quite amused by your topic-list. There are a few quite absurd combinations one can make with that list.

That's... pretty amusing. I had a laugh reading through it. Too much
"simple talk" for me to join up.

Well, it looks nice. I didn't look inside though but I will and I'll probably register. Good job. Please don't let it get like facebook though, facebook is annoying. By the way, did you know there is such a site as www.ihatefacebook.com ?

No, contrary to popular belief my name is not actually 'Sinister Stuff' but 'sinisterstuf', a misspelling resulting from the latter having too many characters with no spaces in between

oh well

Too many threads that no-one says anything in.
A mobile version would be nice (if even possible). Or atleast an easier (less java + image intensive) method for posting, navigating etc. Otherwise I'd be on there more often but there's too many pics to load that are too big and i have to load like 4 pages just to make one post (I have a rubbish browser I know) and so it's just too expensive for me to go there regularly (sorry). That's just my opinion/suggestions. Good job so far though.
