Apparently he has died. Thats a shame; I used to love his books. Then again he was 90, so good going.

Must dig out Childhood's End again. Always preferred it to 2001 efforts.

RIP.

Cheers

WHAT???? He just died? Man, that's tragic. I've read some science fiction stuff by him and loved it, but I guess those were back from the 40's. I've read some stuff by Isaac Asimov as well, but he died in 1991 I think.
I say let's remember these guys by reading their books!!

I didn't like Arthurs stuff but Issacs was cool. The 3 laws of robotics is just pure genius.

People often say HAL was a computer that became a psychopathic murderer but that it worng. A human was in error because they programmed HAL with conflicting instructions. I forget the exact words but one was something like 'The mission must sucseed at ALL costs'. How much does a human life cost? The silly human was trying to end the mission!

That guy who invented Dungeons and Dragons, I suppose you could call him geek royalty, but I forget his name - was posted here a week or so ago.

All the old sci-fi writers are gone now, I met Douglas Adams when he did a Q&A thing at my primary school, nice chap.

Yeah, that was bad. Especially at that age. I mean you can't really complain at 90 (although that feeling is getting less the nearer I approach it...). Also a bummer about Terry Prachett.

What? Arthur had some great ones, "The Star" is one of my favorites:

Although I'll read something by Heinlein or Asimov over Clark anyday honestly.

It's a shame he died. I just saw a dvd with him on there a week or so ago, with Sagan and Hawking talking about spacey stuff

It's not a shame when you die at 90 years old! It's a blessing that he even lived that long!

I consider dying a shame; I thought we were supposed to have fixed that mortality stuff by now

Anyways, you're right on that one!

And of course for all the fantasy geeks, Robert Jordan died a few months back. Loved the Wheel of Time series. Hopefully his wife will get that last book finished. They were feverishly working on it before he died.

Design documents?!? What design documents??? I thought we were just going to wing it!!!

As far as I'm concerned as long as things are not a nightmare of pain, then I reckon you may thinking that less and less as you get closer to that age. I think it's always a shame, regardless of the age. My 92 year old great auntie still gets around like a person half her age and is one hell of a character, and it will be a terrible shame when she goes. Personally I'm aiming to live forever. Doing ok so far...

Well the men in my family don't live much past their 70s, so if I'm kicking around at 90 I will definitely feel blessed!

Lucky you. A quick visit to my families graveyard when I was a kid showed that the women generally make it to 80+ even with massive deadly diseases that they had for decades, while the men live to about 25. Mainly coal mine accidents and the like, but depressing when you are 7. My dad is quite chuffed because he has beaten his dad this year (62) who was almost the record holder on my dad's side.... Someone hurry up and invent a pill...

Cheers
